A 26-year-old Sri Lankan man was arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport after attempting to board a flight to Vienna using a forged French passport. Officers from the Investigation and Suppression Division of Immigration Bureau Region 2 intercepted the suspect, identified as Mr. Sayanthan, during routine checks before departure. The arrest disrupted an apparent passport forgery operation involving international collaborators.

Following the initial arrest, police launched a detailed investigation that led to the identification of a Swedish-Iraqi dual national known as Mr. Jo, aged 39. Authorities allege that he supplied the forged passport and assisted Sayanthan with airline check-in procedures. Immigration officers subsequently revoked his residency permit and arrested him at a hotel in Soi Nana, Bangkok. Mr. Jo has been charged with jointly forging and using falsified travel documents.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Phantana Nuchanart stated that the Immigration Bureau is intensifying efforts to dismantle transnational criminal groups operating in Thailand. He emphasised that such operations often exploit the country’s strategic position as a travel hub, posing risks to national security and Thailand’s international reputation. The Bureau’s recent actions are part of a broader campaign to tighten border security and prevent illegal document use.

Authorities said the case reflects ongoing concerns about criminal networks using forged documents to facilitate movement across Southeast Asia. The Immigration Bureau has strengthened cooperation with both domestic and international agencies to track the production and distribution of counterfeit travel documents. Officials added that continued vigilance at major airports is essential to prevent Thailand from being used as a gateway for cross-border crime.

The real question is what Mr. Jo and the Sri Lankan intended to do with the forged passport. Could be harmless.

It seems from the article Mr. Jo of whatever nationality had PR. What a waste!

Well, well, every day is school day. I - for one - did not know, that a born Swedish national can later on become also a citizen of Iraq ........ or am I getting something wrong here again?

This was doomed to fail. Even if the forged Passport had a fake entry stamp it would not have been entered on the Immigation database and would be detected and rejected during the attempted departure, which, it seems, it was.

Yes, you got it wrong, partly by including specifics that were not stated in the OP.  Was he born in Sweden, was he born in Iraq?
