I'm A Chronic Acid Reflux Sufferer.

Featured Replies

Hi there, I've been lucky to never have had any serious health problems throughout my entire life. As I'm now 80 years old I've been getting chronic acid reflux for the last few years. I watch what I eat especially fried food and other things that have been suggested to me as acid based. I've tried many things to ease this condition but so far non have worked. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you ease the sore throats? One interesting suggestion came from my brother inlaw who's a farmer on the outskirts of Korat. He suggested using Kratom but he did suggest to use it moderately. Has anyone tried this, as over use of Kratom can have disasterous consequences. Another inlaws 26 yo son is in Buddhas VIP lounge, he's been addicted to Kratom for many years and doctors have told him that he won't see 30 years of age.

Do you not take a PPI?

You can get Omeprazole OTC here, which works pretty well. Not eating before you go to sleep helps, at least three hours, and also not lying down after eating. Also avoiding acidic fruits, alcohol and coffee, unless you're drinking with food Spicy foods, raw onions. Anything with caffeine also. Edit: A Carminative like Bacon1 suggested also has worked, but I use it for stomach acid, but it does work for reflux.

When is it a problem, all day, or just at night when trying to relax or sleep.   If the latter, could be Hiatal hernia, and simple enough to fix.

I have one, but simply avoiding some food later in the day, and better sitting & sleeping position is enough to control it.  Doc said it's an easy fix, if i need it.   Endoscopy will find it, or any other issues, and a good idea for you to have anyway, unless already done so.

I'm pretty sure I can help you with that.  There's a particular banana called: Gluay Nam Wah.  The other bananas such as Kruay Haaawhm (long, typical American style), and the Gluay Kai (short smooth, yellowish inside, sweet) are NOT what you want.

Gluay Nam Wah is short like the Gluay Kai but the Gluay Nam Wah has three or four smooth ridges running lengthwise from stem to end.  Anyway, just ask any market vendor and they'll point them out.  Macro has them too.  The Gluay Nam Wah banana has the benefit of being very "base", as opposed to acid.  Needless to say, that's how it works to mitigate the acid in your stomach.

Very important, it can not be stressed enough:  You must select the bunches that are not completely ripe i.e. yellow.  You MUST select bunches that still have a good amount of green left it them.  If they're too ripe, they loose a significant amount of their base.  The wife says you can actually freeze them if their ripening too fast for your consumption rate.

Dosage:  Eat them as much as you can stand, all day long.  The wife had terrible acid reflux for one month after IVF, even had to sit up in bed when trying to sleep to prevent the acid from reaching her throat.  But she ate Gluay Nam Wah bananas, about five per day, during that time, and it's helped her tremendously.  Her body weight maybe much less than yours so you might need to eat more.

Myself, I eat them whenever I feel my stomach is a bit acidy, and it works like a charm.  ( I also throw one on my rolled oats every morning without fail. )

Give it a try and let us all know how it goes.

Of course keep trying to find what it is in your diet that may be the source of the acid reflux and weed it out.

Also, go to Youtube and search "Barbara Oneil acid reflux."   She is an amazing nutritionist, a naturopathic doctor, with more than a few videos on how to cure it.

Salud!

I am 70 now and have had GORD/GERD for almost 50 years.

I have taken different medications (some listed previously) at different times.  Even with lifestyle changes, I have found that one medication may work well for a few years, then stops working.  Change to a new medication which works for a few years, then stops .... repeat cycle.

My advice, find something that works for you now.  Keep taking the medication until it no longer works, the seek out an alternative.

Good luck.

20mg Omeprazole. Years of experience. Works great.

Cabbage juice works well.

Reflux can also be caused by low acid believe it or not, where it bubbles in the gut and keeps the top valve open. Makes sense that the body would have trouble not making enough acid as we age, but the first thing the docs say is too much acid, take antacids etc. Have a look into it.

Tried all kinds of things, but the only thing that works for me quickly is cucumber. I munch on one, and about 5 minutes later, my acid reflux is gone.

I have what I think is "silent reflux". I got it under control by chewing gum. I chew gum several hours a day, especially after meals.

Yes same here I take lameprozole or gaviscon at night ,someitworkssometimes not

In your case when did you take Omeprazole and what doseage. My diet has never changed over the years but as I've got older I've drastically reduced my beer intake. That's when acid reflux really hit me. Maybe I should hit the piss hard again.

Sleep on your left side and or uphill, by either extending the legs on the head of your bed or reducing the legs of the foot of your bed.

And of course, see a doctor.

Doctor whacked my onto Pantaprozol 40mg......reflux stopped with in 24 hours. Now on Omeprazol 10mg............. 6am everyday.

I was in a bad way, had biopsies the lot.......it is, for me at least, an absolute wonder drug.

They say omeoprazole/pantoprazole cannot be taken for many years continuosly, isn't that true?

That's why I stopped it.

Been on it for over 20 years.......so we shall see.

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar with "the mother" (cloudy particles in it) in a 16 oz glass of water every morning. Worked for me, changes the acidity in your stomach.

At 80 get on a PPI such as Omeprazole 20-40mg a day, it's really cheap, GPO 100x20mg about 180 baht from Fascino

Try gastrosec or miracid , both can be bought at any pharmacy but try a few places as some charge 2-3 times price of other places.

Take 1 every morning for at least 2 weeks and should notice a difference. Obviously certain foods and drinks will trigger reflux so best avoid or reduce any that seem to start it .

I have some reflux issue.

I eat raw lemon, and when i feel the reflux, immediatelly drink a half glass of water

Go to pharmacy and ask for Miracid green box 14 capsules take 1 per day I was on them then one day someone suggested acupuncture I had 10 sessions at 500 baht a time now two years later have 12 capsules left I took the two due to a heavy drinking session during these two years I restrict my alcohol levels to no more that 4 bottles of Leo per week

@Mason45

For calming an acid stomach, just mix 1 tsp of baking 'soda' with water.   A few burbs later and you sleep with no problems.

If you  must take a PPI, use Lansoprazole, its a lot kinder on the stomach and can be taken over a longer time. I use 5mg 30 minutes before eating dinner, but not every day. Stay away from spicy food, do not add salt to either the cooking or on the meal. There are all kinds of foods which can trigger reflux, including tomatoes, strawberries and blueberries. Keep a diary of your daily foods to asses what triggers it for you. Coffee, and alcohol are two drinks to avoid at night and don't eat at least 3 to 4 hours before going to bed. Take your time eating, rushing your food can be just as bad as some of the things you eat.

What is GPO? By the way when I visit my house on the outskirts of Bangkok, I buy a 3 months supply of meds. That pharmacy is 50% cheaper than Fascino in Pattaya.

GPO is some govt thing so it's cheaper than the others mentioned on here

Indeed. By lowering the acid, believe the body can’t break down food as effectively, thus hampering nutrient uptake. Clearly something is amiss with us humans in having to do this and it all points to diet and/or intolerance. We typically eat a plethora of different types of food and sauces (not to mention all the sugar, salt and chemical additives) all in one go, eat generally too big a meal, and then bung alcohol all over the top of it. No animal does this. How can it not cause issues? Over time, the gut surely doesn’t know what to do with it all and it overburdens the system. Obviously the problem needs sorting out for the gut to heal, but once that is done, we should be eating mindfully, slowly and small. How did we evolve? What did we eat etc? Fish, meat, organ meats, root veg and the odd bit of fruit… and generally not at the same time.

Have found that carbs cause me real issues… cramping, bloating, reflux etc. The last time I had an ulcer and ongoing problems, I was so exasperated with it all I quit solid food for a week with a 3-day water fast in between. It totally sorted it. The body healed itself. Keeping a spreadsheet and noting what foods cause issues on a 1-5 scale is a good idea. Found that salmon, watermelon, mayo and Parmesan cheese were particular killers!

He says all that while reaching for another bottle of gin! F a doodle do, there’s no hope lol.

All the best, op. But do note how tight the stomach feels after eating rice, bread etc.

What you are suffering from could be Helicobacter pylori Bacteria. Just Google and see if you have the symptoms. If you do have some, consult a doctor and have tests performed. It can be easily cured by a combination of two different types of tablets at the same time. Good luck.
