               Good point, but in reality nobody untrained in such scenarios knows how they will react in such a horrific situation, many will have understandably been pretty much paralysed with fear, and fear can be very contagious especially when the blood starts flowing

                 Add to that the two tier justice system in operation in the UK. were you can also be prosecuted for using excessive force even when faced with an attacker threatening you or your family  in your own home ! and peoples reluctance to "take the law into their own hands" starts to become understandable. 

                 As to how many people were on the train , it does not say but I would imagine those in different carriages would not initially have been aware of what was happening They have arrested 2 so far but have not said if others are being hunted

Don't hold your breath - "enquiries are ongoing, it would not be appropriate to release details of those arrested at this juncture".

The arrested men, who police described as a 32-year-old black British national and a 35-year-old British national of Caribbean descent, both born in the UK, were being questioned at separate police stations.

              Further to my previous comment, For the people to fight back , it would require one person to make the first move whilst not knowing if anyone else would join in, he would then immediately  be in the position of facing two knife wielding maniacs alone, 

             Few people are capable of stepping up to the mark in a situation like that, maybe off duty special forces, or similar but that's about it. the average have a go hero would get sliced to ribbons if the assailants meant business, and it could make things even worse for everybody.

             Not only that but if a few did join in and in the ensuing melee one of the perps was wounded fatally or otherwise all those involved would have their lives turned upside down for months if not years whilst "due process" as the lefties like to put it, is followed, 

             The consequences of that don't bear thinking about,  Stress, Inconvenience, Marriage breakdown, Loss of Job. Loss of house, Homelessness, etc etc  And don't expect any help from the authorities

Local Mayor said "We heard the incident about the man who shielded the young girl from attack and he was horrendously injured himself. Our thoughts and prayers are with him, but it shows that everyday people are capable of extraordinary things. You don't know what you'll do when you're put in that horrendous circumstance."
