There were no tariffs on Japanese cars and he claims this destroyed the auto industry in the US.

Failed businesses are not an argument against business acumen. Just as failed marriages are not an argument against someone knowing women.

Rather the opposite is the case. Failure that is followed by success is a sign of deeper understanding.

Before WW I, tariffs financed the federal govt.

Local RE & income taxes pretty much stayed local.  16th Amendment for Fed. Income Tax was established 1913.

So yea, Trump has a point, and they given away too much over the years, along with funding so many international organizations, that rarely benefit the USA.

About time someone thought about USA first, instead of continually borrowing money to give it away.

More scummy, scammy lies from that scoundrel Trump. It's sad what's happening to America.

What he knows and doesn't say, is that the Thanksgiving Day meal from Walmart last year contained 21 items. This year, it contains 15.

If you count each item individually, then it's 29 vs 23.

The 'reporter' was directed to make that deceitful statement.

Have you been driving a British car at that time? 🤣

Japan currently has a zero import duty on cars, meaning there are no tariffs on U.S. automobiles entering the Japanese market. However, the U.S. has implemented a 15% tariff on Japanese vehicles and auto parts as part of a recent trade agreement.  (AI)

It's all about "barriers."

How bigly dare those Japanese set impossibly high safety standards that only they can meet, and produce RHD vehicles we refuse to build, and manufacture vehicles small enough for their smaller roads!  We should demand they embiglify their infrastructure!

Trust, though, is built by good rules and healthy relationships, and Trump is trampling on both. The result: If he goes down this road, Trump will make America and the world poorer. Mr. President, do your homework.

No need to worry, we have the bestliest allies!

What don't you understand about the fact that Trump got a fortune from his father. And that he destroyed his father's business. As for his negotiating skills, he ended up overpaying for several business all of which went bankrupt precisely because he paid too much and couldn't pay back his creditors. The only reason he didn't lose all his fortune is that his lawyers took fool advantage of bankruptcy laws to tie up the claims of his creditors.

Even if the claim is true, it's not statistically significant. Maybe the price of turkey has collapsed this year. Who know. But food costs have gone up.

I don't want to start a new thread, but Trump just signed an executive order to crack down on flag burning.

Dictatorial or fair game?

Of course we know it's likely because of the Mamdani victory in New York.

His policies so far have been to pull the rug from under poor people's feet. Where is this 17 trillion and what is he going to do with it? Eliminate all income taxes for the poor?

“You burn a flag, you get one year in jail. You don’t get 10 years, you don’t get one month,” Trump said. “You get one year in jail, and it goes on your record, and you will see flag burning stopping immediately.”

How much time do you get for trafficking in underage girls and boys?

Don't you understand that if you start on an irrelevant topic in a thread, it's less likely to draw the interest of those who might otherwise be inclined to comment?

Fair game!

4 U.S. Code § 8 - Respect for flag

(d)  The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker’s desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.

The code is an advisory, and not a law that has penalties for disrespecting the flag.

That is protected by the 1st Amendment, and any executive order would be unconstitutional when it makes it way through the courts.  Probably the first court it showed up in.

People should educated themselves before posting.  :coffee1:

In legal terms, "should" typically indicates a recommendation or suggestion rather than a mandatory requirement, allowing for discretion in its application. It is often used to encourage certain actions without imposing a legal obligation, unlike "shall" or "must," which denote mandatory requirements. (AI)

It appears Trump wants to turn "should" into "shall" implementing penalties for defying the king.

I've always said it's a lot easier to get super rich if you're willing to scam and ruin the people who you've worked with along the way, and bankrupt them financially. It takes a lot of character and compassion to behave ethically with the people that you work with, but it is well worth it.

Quite the opposite, the reason why America became the largest economy in the world was due to a lack of tariffs, and open an economy and the use of globalization, not the opposite. Anyone who's in doubt of that simply has to look at the Thai economy for proof of that theorem.

FAILED VENTURES

GoTrump.com: A luxury travel website launched in 2006 that shut down within a year despite being powered by Travelocity.

Trump Ice: A bottled water brand that launched in 2004 and was discontinued.

Trump Magazine: A luxury lifestyle magazine launched in 2007 that ceased publication by 2009.

Trump Mortgage: A financial services company launched in 2006 that ceased operations in 2007, just before the housing market crash.

Trump Network: A multi-level marketing vitamin company.

Trump Shuttle: An airline service purchased in 1989 that defaulted on its loans and was taken over by creditors and sold to USAir by 1992.

Trump Steaks: A brand of steaks launched in 2007 in partnership with The Sharper Image and QVC; sales were discontinued after only two months.

Trump University: An unaccredited real estate seminar program, founded in 2005, that ceased operations in 2011 amid numerous lawsuits and investigations into its business practices. A settlement was later reached in a class-action lawsuit.

Trump Vodka: A brand of vodka produced under a licensing agreement from 2005 to 2011.

New Jersey Generals: A team in the USFL (United States Football League) that folded along with the league.

Trump: The Game: A board game first released in the 1980s.

CORPORATE BANKRUPTCIES

Trump Taj Mahal Associates (Atlantic City casino) - 1991.
Trump Castle Hotel & Casino (Atlantic City casino) - 1992.
Trump Plaza Associates (Atlantic City casino) - 1992.
Plaza Operating Partners (Manhattan hotel) - 1992.
Trump Casino Holdings (Atlantic City casinos) - 2004.
Trump Entertainment Resorts (Atlantic City casinos) - 2009.

What kind of "brilliant businessman" bankrupts multiple casinos? They are a license to print money. (Or a venue for money laundering and corruption.)

The only thing he has going for him are the hotels, and that's because they are another platform for money laundering and bribery.

Now, if you said "he's running the country like his businesses, and using it to rake in bribes and launder mafia / oligarch cash." That would be an accurate statement.

What kind of idiot does it take to fail when running a casino? Even with his father sending suitcases of cash and repeatedly failing to pay the contractors working for him he couldn't make it work.
