Phuket Boat Taxi Trial Delayed Until Mid-December

Trial runs for Phuket’s boat taxi pilot project have been postponed by one month, with the testing period now scheduled from 15–30 December, Governor Saransak Srikruanet announced. The service aims to provide an alternative to the island’s heavily congested roads, initially operating along the west coast from Nai Yang beach, near Phuket International Airport, to Patong Beach.

The boat taxi pilot is part of a broader plan to improve transport connectivity on the island. Long-term proposals envisage a network of 14 stops along Phuket’s west coast, covering major tourist beaches such as Nai Yang, Nai Thon, Bang Tao, Karon, Kata, Kamala and Nai Harn. Temporary floating piers will be installed at key departure and arrival points and licensing criteria for passenger boats on the route have been discussed by a transport and logistics working group.

Governor Saransak highlighted the potential benefits of the system, saying it could become a vital alternative to Phuket’s road network. “If we cannot accommodate visitors efficiently, repeat tourism will inevitably decline,” he said. “But by improving connectivity and travel convenience, we can enhance visitors’ experiences and encourage them to return.” He added that the project’s continuation would depend on safety, legality and overall feasibility, noting that road-based solutions such as expansions and expressways remain longer-term undertakings.

Preparations for the trial are ongoing, with private partners providing temporary equipment while the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning finalises designs for provisional piers. The Phuket Urban Development Alliance, together with an academic institution and the Digital Economy Promotion Agency, will monitor and analyse data during the trial to assess safety, effectiveness and regulatory compliance.

The full pilot route will cover 16 nautical miles (approximately 31km) and take around 40 minutes per trip. Fourteen potential pier sites have been identified for the service, which is designed to ease congestion on one of Thailand’s busiest tourist islands.

Key Takeaways

• The Phuket boat taxi trial is now scheduled for 15–30 December.

• The service will initially run from Nai Yang to Patong Beach along the west coast.

• Success depends on safety, legality, and overall feasibility of the pilot.

Perfect for the slightly unsteady passengers

Totally unrealistic.

Don't think it will have any bearing on the traffic congestion but nevertheless makes for a cheap day out if planned proper.

Great timing. Right when tourism should be on the increase as the Europeans come to avoid winter and enjoy Christmas ,Thai style.

Seems that this hasn’t been planned very well and has all the classic signs of a phuk up waiting to happen.

Cheap? We don't know the price yet, but knowing the taxi drivers in Phuket, it's easy to imagine how they'll set the fares.
