Supreme Court Orders Thaksin to Pay 17.6-Billion-Baht Tax Bill

Featured Replies

Thaksin's only chance to evade the law is for another of his selected'*puppets' to become prime minister at the next election. Hopefully the Thai electorate will not fall for the same con again.

The Supreme Court has ordered Thaksin Shinawatra to pay 17.6 billion Thai baht in taxes, fines, and fees relating to the sale of Shin Corporation shares in 2006. This overturns the earlier decisions by Thailand's Central Tax Court and the Special Appeals Court, which had sided with Thaksin, previously cancelling the Revenue Department's tax assessment due to illegality.

The origins of this case trace back to a 2017 tax assessment by the Revenue Department, demanding payment from Thaksin following the sale of Shin Corp shares. In 2023, Thaksin managed to initially win his case in both the Tax Court and Appeals Court. However, the Revenue Department challenged these rulings, leading to the Supreme Court's recent reversal.

Previously, in 2010, the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions had already ruled to seize Thaksin's assets valued at 46 billion baht. In this recent judgement, the court considered that Thaksin's children, Panthongtae and Pintongta, effectively acted as proxies, facilitating the share sale in 2006.

They purchased 329 million shares for one baht each and sold them for 49.25 baht per share to Temasek via the Thai Stock Exchange, yielding nearly 16 billion baht in capital gains, reported the Bangkok Post.

The transaction allowed Temasek, Singapore's government investment arm, to acquire a 49% stake in Shin Corp for 73.3 billion baht. This deal was enabled by a recent legal amendment increasing the foreign ownership limit in telecommunications from 25% to 49%, just days after which the sale concluded in January 2006, with Thaksin as prime minister.

Key Takeaways

  • The Supreme Court orders Thaksin to pay 17.6 billion baht in taxes.
  • Previous court rulings in his favour have been overturned.
  • Thaksin’s children acted as proxies in the lucrative share sale.

I really hope and pray they make him pay whilst he's still in prison, that is if he's still in there, this snake is probably already planing his trip back to Dubai the first chance he gets he will take off.

The coup was in 2006 and he was in New York for a UN meeting when the coup happened.

He returned to Thailand in 2008. Yes, he was staying in Hong Kong after the coup.

And then?

I'm sure they will know he's struggling and agree to him paying 1000bht a week to clear it 👍

A Supreme Court ruling in Thailand is NOT the end all of the matter like in the west.......

Just ask Hopewell

Hopewell has not been paid one baht after winning in the Supreme Court..

Tony will not be paying one baht of this tax, not now and maybe never.....Plenty more legal shenanigans in the works that's a certainty..That can stretch out for many a decade...

“Tony will not be paying one baht of this tax" … we have to wait and see about that …

but times have changed for toni. the cards have been reshuffled, and he no longer holds the trump cards in his own hands. which is a good thing ... thailand needs a future without toni's influence ...

...With No Penalty... (?)

Who knows how accurate the internet net worth estimates for Thaskin are.

Some reports are the 17.6 billion baht judgement would be approximately 25% of his total net worth.

Estimated 72.1 Billion in total assets.

I think others have expressed feelings well enough of how some view this man's actions.

The good news is that he gets back 28.4 million baht

As far as I'm aware, Hopewell got paid after 2 Boeing planes were confiscated in Germany

Estimated wealth is 72 billion baht so this won't bankrupt him by any stretch, but rich people are very loath to part with their pennies....... so it will hurt.

As you can see a Supreme Administrative Court ruling is not final in Thailand..

has been seeking a retrial to reverse a 2019 Supreme Administrative Court order to pay Hopewell

There is no active payment plan because the Hopewell Thailand payment dispute is ongoing, with a history of court rulings in favor of both Hopewell and the Thai government. The government has been seeking a retrial to reverse a 2019 Supreme Administrative Court order to pay Hopewell approximately 25 billion baht in compensation. Therefore, no payment has been made, and the case is still being litigated, despite previous final court decisions that have since been reopened for retrial.

You are correct. I was confused with the 30 million euro  owed to Walter Bau for the toll road to Don Muang

When will the persecution ever stop.

When will his supporters, apart from his family members ( who are a bunch of leeches), realise Thaksin is a dishonest and evil person? Plus a self interested person in power and money. I think he believes he can walk on water. Well those days are definitely gone. Hope he enjoys his days in the afterlife in that hot place called," Hell". If there is such a place. If you think I am over reactive about this bloke then google his history.

No.

Does anyone really believe he would have 17.6 billion Baht in a Thai bank? Surely, he needed that money when he was in self-exile. How is the court going to show he has the funds?
