So how much does a simple drip cost to be administered?

More than a box of edibles?

Don't eat them, go suck on a dummy instead.

Dumb comment - the issue isn't about the cost of insurance of whether she could afford the bill - with a spectacular degree of manufactured sanctimony you have missed the point about 'double charging' !!!

My Wife (Thai) was provided with her bill after an over night hospital stay...

The accounting team then came and explained there was a mistake on the bill - took it away and returned with a higher bill.

Wife asked why, and the answer given: "we thought your insurance was Thai insurance"....

Because her medical / health insurance was from an overseas provider the bill was inflated.

This is a discusting practice IMO - its simple profiteering.

Some will use the excuse that 'international insurance' subsidies the costs for Thai Insurance - but thats total borrox - its about proffetteering.

So - What treatment did this lady receive that cost her 36,000 baht ? was she in ICU / HDU over night or just in a just provided a drip and observed for a few hours ?

Double the 17500 and it still does not equal the money they paid..

1000 baht extra administration costs for producing a secondary bill?

About 4 years ago after a full night of dealing with diarrhea, I went to the ER at a private hospital in Udon Thani for an IV to booster my electrolytes. I had previously done this at The Army Hospital and was administered the IV in their ER and sent home afterwards, and the charge was around 500 Baht. The private hospital insisted that I could not be given an IV in the ER, and I had to be admitted and spend the night in a room. The cost was over 13,000 Baht. These private hospitals mostly belong to rich corporations that trade on the Thai stock market, and their primary focus is PROFIT for their shareholders. Just like any other company with a marketing department, these people have mastered the art of schemes to extract the maximum amount of money from the patient's wallet or insurance company. With any other purchase one makes in the marketplace, the customer sees the price list first, then decides if he wants to purchase the item or not. In the hospital, you get treated first, then see the cost after the service has been performed. They outright "hijack" their patients, and this has got to change!

Monica Gupta, an Indian travel blogger, apologized after accusing hospitals in Krabi, Thailand, of overcharging tourists for medical treatment following adverse reactions to cannabis gummies. She alleged on Instagram that she and a friend experienced a “Thai hospital scam” when charged 36,000 baht after consuming cannabis edibles and requiring IV treatment. This sparked discussions about medical costs and cannabis use among tourists.

Gupta and her friend felt ill after eating “weird gummies” in Phuket and were admitted to a hospital for treatment. Initially presented with a 17,500 baht bill, they were later informed that the total was 36,000 baht, leading Gupta to suspect overcharging. She noticed that other patients were treated for similar symptoms and encouraged followers to share experiences, fueling reactions from social media users.

Responses varied, with many Thai and Indian commentators disputing Gupta's scam claims. A long-term Indian resident in Thailand praised the local medical system and stressed the importance of travel insurance. A Thai user highlighted that state hospital costs are lower and suggested ensuring awareness of edibles' effects before consumption. Gupta's apology clarified misunderstandings but maintained concerns about cannabis gummies targeting tourists.

Despite retracting her accusation, Gupta advised tourists to buy travel insurance and consider state hospitals over private ones. Comments continued to challenge her scam assertion, emphasizing personal responsibility in consuming edibles. The debate underlined the broader issue of medical costs for foreigners in Thailand and the need for cautious consumption of unfamiliar products, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Gupta apologized for misunderstanding about Thai hospital charges.
  • Social media showcased diverse opinions on medical costs and cannabis use.
  • Tourists are advised to check medical coverage and product familiarity.

And did that hospital force feed her the cannabis gummies and then force her to go to that particular hospital for treatment which I doubt?

If she and her friend took the gummies as a matter of personal choice then I have no sympathy at all for the stupid woman or her friend.

Anybody that has been charged 100 baht for a cotton bud at Bangkok Pattaya will tell you this girl is right.

First consider cost of insurance, in Thailand, if over 70...approx US$500/month...I don't know how much travel insurance would cost

If insurance costs that much then it makes a mockery of anyone over 70 believing they are coming to Thailand in their retirement to live cheaply on their pension. $US6000 in a year is a lot of money - make that $9000 in Australian dollars from a country which has free health. Travel insurance costs significantly less.

Scam or not If one is stupid enough to eat /use gummies/drugs than one has to put up with the consequences.

Many travel insurance policies exclude coverage for medical treatment of the effects of drugs that were intentionally taken unless the drugs were prescription drugs.

I guess one does drugs on one's own dime.

Whatever happened to just sleeping it off?

Exactly.  Many years ago my friends Staffy ate about 1/4oz of resin.  It just slept for 2 days!

No mention of how many of their gummie drugs they consumed' It may have been a serious overdose.

Apparently they had three ivs not one.

They said they fell asleep during the treatment, perhaps they were charged for an overnight stay in the private hospital.

Idiots all round.

Why would you go to a very expensive private hospital in the first place?

That is of course IF you can get insured at 70 and have no pre-existing health problem, insure generally and not for any particular dangerous sport,  and do NOT even think of eating cannabis gummies then claiming your hospital costs back.

scams everywhere including  by bloggers to gain publicity and ..easy money

When you go to any hospital. You are not only paying for medical care. You are paying for foreigner care also. Foreigners bodies are not the same as Thai I guess. It cost more to take care of any problems.

It’s all part of Thailands two tier system for aliens who don’t speak Thai.

36000 for two people doesn't seem out of the ordinary.

Had a two DNA test made and was informed by the local government office that the price would be be around estimated 15000 thb, when paying at the counter (public hospital) the charge was 17600 thb.

No biggie, price was not an exact quote and it was a walk-in procedure taking two blood samples after 30 minutes wait time, no doctors examination involved.

So 36000 the for a doctor's assessment and two iv drops isn't worth complaining about.

I always stay at home [cos i live here] i never have insurance cos  im 90 !.  if i have a problem i go to gove hosp ,great if you dint mind waiting [on same day you go] . very very rsonable cost

Perhaps yours was less complicated.. Thais in general require longer hospital stays. They go to the hospital more often for trivial things.

Not sure about less complicated. I started off with an epidural which would have been the easier option. But for some reason every time the surgeon checked to see if it had taken effect, no joy. Landed up having to have a general instead! That was the expensive option!

If you cant afford decent health care there is no need to bad mouth it.

I know at least 3 people whose lives have been saved at this hospital.

This is without a doubt the worst type of comment on A N.

It tells you all you need to know about the poster.

It’s ok for him to live in LOS but not for others who choose to take the risk and self insure.

Pathetic.

in BigC on 18 November 2025, ear buds  were 15thb for 100,

If you paid 1,000 for 1 at the hospital that in my Mum's works means that you have more money than sense. In my words it means that you must be far more stupid than me to even think of paying that price.
