I don’t know exactly where it is in Hat Yai ( I have never been), a former colleague of mine was working there but has been stuck in the hotel for a few days now, looking like he will have to be rescued by boat and taken to higher ground !!

Ya this video is just down the street from saengthong boys school. Right next to the aqueducts. 😆

Yes, I have. If not, I would not comment on the subject. I assume you mean Chomphon, right?

I assume you both mean Chumphon.

What would we do without the intervention of the grammar police?

Chumphon is a nice layover when travelling south, and visit Old Time cafe 😉 Even I prefer Thung wua  Lain Beach and some food and company at Pirate Terrace, You are a bit closer to south with a fresh head start of the rush hours through the city during the morning starting from Chumphon.

Anyway, Pirate Terrace do have some good burgers and pizza, as well used to have proper bread German/norwegain standard. Also a proper selection of weed for those who enjoy that, as well special brownies.

Remain ignorant?

I find Ubon Ratchathani very nice environment for my family and exciting. There is lots to do to keep you busy. Along with other Thai customs and festivals, I find the Candle Festival parading of intricately carved candles to Buddhist temples or wats as one of Thailand’s most stunning and meaningful festivals. The Candle Festival ushers in the beginning of the monsoon season. The celebration involves colorful parades of majestic and lavish candle wax sculptures accompanied by Thai traditional music and dance and lots of street food stalls. Each to his/her own and Happy Travels.

We have a house down south in Trang province but as we pass through nearby Thung Song I wonder how folk can live there....Muang Trang is not much better

Most Thai cities is boring, but some provinces is nicer than others even their city is ugly and boring.

That can be said the world over

Many old cities world wide have a bit more variety of culture and architecture. Travelling Europe is not boring when it comes to destinations and experience something new and exciting in each and one city. Even Nottingham was a nice city to visit.

I live in Loei, a quiet town, but no foreign food, almost no night-life.

A place to avoid: Pai...

You got a few places around there, and we used to visit the biker bar/restaurant Saloon Loei when passing by.

Have you ever been to Chiang Khan in Loei province, it is has more culture and architecture (wooden houses) than the city of Loei itself

Loei has foreign food

Pattaya?

If you're not a sexpat, what else is there?

yes, I love that place, and we often go there for a night or two. Used to be a quite good American pizza restaurant there before covid, and unfortunately he disappeared. But yes, love to stay at the riverside in the walking street. Best place to sit in the window and have my morning coffee, and as well a good bakery who also serves the best breakfast to next to the river. So one of my favorite destinations in Thailand when it is not high season, or holidays. To crowded those days

Passed through Phrae overnight and it was diabolical for even 24 hours..it is like the city the world forgot along with Ipoh in Malaysia closing a near 2nd place in cities/towns I'd never stay.

I have to give Pattaya for the Night life and restaurants as well some few good live music scenes, and I do not think of the cover band places in walking street 😉

Pattaya is also affordable, but as many other places, to crowded now with to much, whatever it is. The golden years is gone for Phuket, Jomtien and Pattaya for my taste.

Not if you knew where to go. I had great times there. Loads of women, scored some smoke , great nightclub with good sounds and an interesting market. Had my first threesome there.

About 40 years ago I was in Pimai checking out the ruins. Back then it was absolutely dead after 8.00 and even a decent bowl of noodles was hard to find in the daytime. At night a noodle seller set up her stall outside my Chinese style hotel which was clean but very basic.

At 9.00 pm the noodle seller knocked on my door offering her assistant for the night. I politely declined but pretty unexpected in such a dead town.

Was the assistant good looking?

Reminds me of my first visit to Taiwan, back in the days when the country was under total military control.

My company sent me there for a week, company booked airline and hotel and bus from airport to the hotel in the centre of Taipei.

At every step armed soldiers on the spot yelling* at civilians walking down steps to get off the aircraft and eveyywhere. (*yelling queue queue and if one person not in a strict line up pushed with rifle butt so that the queue was very formal.)

Got to the hotel, receptionist spoke English, went to the room, 5 minutes later phone in the room rang, it was the receptionist, in English 'I send the girl to your room now'. I responded 'NO NO,  I don't want girls to come to my room, not any day'.

One hour later again 'I send the girl to your room now'.

I responded ''NO NO,  I don't want girls to come to my room, not any day'.

Receptionist 'she is very nice girl, my sister'.

I responded 'NO NO,  I don't want girls to come to my room, not any day'.

Ten minutes later a knock on my door, receptionist at my door with a girl. I refused.

Next morning a taxi (driver was an armed uniformed soldier) took me to the office of the company I was to work for foe one week.

I politely told the manager of the company about my experiences at the hotel. He laughed then asked me for a document from the hotel. He read the hotel name and said 'This is what yu would call 5 star in western countries.

He called the hotel and was barraged with demands (from the hotel manager) that I must accept girls coming to my room.  He repeated strongly that the hotel not send girls to my room.

That evening, 5 miutes after arriving back at the hotel phone rings 'I send the girl to your room now'. I hung up. Three more times that evening phone rang but I ignored it.

Every evening for next 6 days same thing.

I would put Hua Hin on top of the list.

Yeah the old train station with the Royal waiting room, Bintabhat precinct, seafood restaurants over the water & the fishing pier, beaches with headland temples, lit up palace area, and gets even worse with nearby hill top city view park and Khao Takiab lake. And too many Walking Streets. Shocking place.

Hat Yai without a doubt.

It's packed with day trip Malaysians these days

Have you ever been to Satun?

I've got the pleasure of 2.5 weeks split between Hat Yai and Satun over Xmas, assuming the floods have died down by then.  GF's Sister's house, which is 10 minutes walk from the hotel we're staying at, currently has flood waters upto the 2nd floor 😞

Fortunately I only booked 1 way flights (Plan is/was to go over to Langkawi, Penang & Mallaca after the New Year) so won't lose too much money if I cancel.

Never saw her close up. But from a distance as I entered the hotel earlier she looked too young .

Yes , in the old days things were a bit less santized for your protection. On my second visit to Thailand I was propositioned right in the departure terminal at Don Muang. The lady in question had actually hired a room within the terminal !.  In those days , anybody taking a taxi into the city from the airport would almost always get offers from the driver offering to take you to some place or other with beautiful women.

Back on topic  , I don't think I have ever been to an especially boring city in Thailand. It all depends on what you are looking for and how easy you are to please. Again , some 35 or more years ago I was stuck overnight in Ranong  ( can't remember why )  . Not much to do there but I went out for an evening bowl of noodles and a beer anyway.  While eating , I was approached by a fairly elderly Thai guy who asked if he could sit at my table and have a chat as he not had the chance to speak English for a long time.  I  warily said ok expecting a scam at worst or a boring question and answer session at best. How wrong I was. Turned out he was a retired army officer ( captain or major level )  who had served with the Thai army in Vietnam during the war. In his duties he frequently worked alongside his American counterparts and had pretty much perfected his English. A very interesting man indeed with lots of tales to tell. Long story short , an hour quickly past chatting when he had to leave and make his way home to his wife. A very entertaining evening all for the price of a bowl of noodles ( he paid for the beers before leaving )

I sometimes think to myself , how on earth did we pass the time without the internet or mobile phones. Then I remember , it was pretty good anyway.

Being a country bumpkin, the 4 most boring cities I experienced when living in Thailand were:

Bangkok

Nongkhai

Udon Thani

Pattaya.
