Cold :cheesy:

I find the cold hits different here. If I was home in UK I would think it's a pleasant summers day. Here I am wearing a hoodie, long trousers and thick socks.

  • Just out of Kanchanaburi - a chilly 22’ as we speak - should hit about 30 today. Perfect temperatures!! Not too hot - so can get a bit of work done around the farm.

16C this morning at 7.00am, Khao Kho elevation 780 metres ASL. Check it every morning as well as the barometer. 15C has been the coldest so far but last season got down to 10C.

cool. You live up there full time? It's been on my list but never made the effort to go down there.

Actually I would prefer to live near a beach but it is the wife's home village area. We live in a semi rural area so okay.

It's a little nippy up here in the hills of Luang Prabang.  I had to buy a little 1-bar electric heater to stop my toes getting cold at night 🙂

I wear slippers and a dressing gown but my knees get cold, now waiting for my pajamas to arrive...

Yeah, I have that sort of feeling. My Wife says when we lived in the UK and in the winter you had the bedroom windows open.

At the moment we are in a hotel in Si Racha, she has the Aircon set to 22C  and I’m  absolutely freezing…..

oh man you married the wrong women. 😂 having a wife who has access to being on a mountain like that would be perfect for me. Otherwise getting up there is pretty difficult and unapproachable for most people. It would be hard to live though. Doesn't appear to be any central town so you probably need to go down in to the city to get supplies on a regular basis and forget about eating out unless you like noodles.

weather report on the bike this evening. 17 and only about 5:30. Having air that crisp in the evening is very special treat. You don't get very much of this in Thailand that's for sure.

I bet it's really nice weather there. I should visit before it gets destroyed by tourism (or has it already?).

Well, the Chinese have definitely moved in.. all-year round, thanks to the new train line from Yunnan.

And yes, this is the season for 'western' tourists.  So loads of western 'gals' wearing elephant pants etc.

As for me, everybody just steers well clear of me.  That's what happens when you wear a gimp suit to keep out the cold 🙂

A train direct from China? oh no. Lots of big crowds and yelling or just single travelers? That could be really bad news for the city if they show up in big numbers.

I've seen some really bad behavior in Chiang Mai from them in the past. Just the other day I'm pretty sure what was a Chinese tourist on a motorbike passed me on my left side and we almost collided. Never in all my years here has a Thai person done that to me.

This is a cold spell for Kanchanaburi right? I wouldn't think it would get chilly down there ever but I've never been.

Yes - the last few weeks have been quite cool, and we had rains until mid November.   Now we will have no rain until April or May, and the temperatures will ramp up from mid Jan.  A few years ago we had a spell from Jan to late March where every day was above 38.   Too bloody hot!

The interesting thing, on Friday, there will only be 3 celsius difference between my home in Norway and home in Thailand.

Predicted 9 celsius in Norway 6:00 and 12 celsius 6:00 in the morning here. 9000 km apart and at 59 north

Not at all that bad. With all of the tourists there is no shortage of restaurants. Buy most things locally and rarely have to make a special trip to Phetchabun for supplies but do go to Macro whenever we go there for other business.

We are next to the Ping river at the southern end of Amphur Muang, just outside the outer ring road.

I've been monitoring the temperatures here every 15 minutes since January 2019.

True dedication. I get a little obsessive over temperature too. What's the absolute high/low you've observed there since 2019?

Hardly dedication - I use DS18b20 sensors, collect the data programmatically and store in a database on a raspberry pi server.

It was more of an IT project to build and visualize the data than interest in knowing the temperature.

Here are some stats

Interesting. Looks like 2019 was the coldest so far. I feel hotter in Chiang Mai I think because it cools off slower because the urban heat blanket effect but the absolute lows go down pretty far.

I wouldn't mind setting that up myself. I did a project once using a thing called Phidgets that had a number of sensor modules. We used it to automate a coffee roaster and since I'm a programmer I was able to take in all the data and make a frontend for it to run on macOS. It was lots of fun actually and I would do it again.

Any links to a tutorial in setting this up?

Yes, 2019/20 cool season was by far. There was a trend of rising minimums year on year until last year, but no obvious charge in highest temperatures to support climate change warming.

I now use an esp8266 running espeasy (https://www.letscontrolit.com/forum/) with a raspberry pi running linux using a crontab bash script to grab the data. It also is a webserver for my other projects, such as security cameras made from raspberry pi zeros and esp32-cams, and our 17 residential room business management, billing and accounting system.

13°C / 55 F

Bloody cold.

Everyone with hoodies/caps.

In sunny MaeJo it was 12c on my patio at dawn.

7:40am now and it's risen to 12.3c.

10C at 6am this morning but thankfully not the 15 knot wind we had yesterday.
