RAMAGEDDON: RAM prices are killing us. How are you bearing up?

Featured Replies

Dear Folks.

I don't know how you are handling things, these days.

But, I have a new computer I am trying to build, and I have decided to scavenge the RAM from my other computer and put half of it into my new build.

I bought 64GB of RAM, about a year ago, and now this same kit is USD800.

Are they CRAZY?

So, this is my only strategy.

I will downsize the RAM on one of my computers to 32 GB, and share the other half with my new build.

What are you doing to accommodate and compensate for the antics of these RAM pirates?

Just wondering...because....

There is really no good solution at this time, and maybe for another year, or two.

So disgusting, really.

What is a good computer without sufficient RAM?

And, who would I be without my mind, for that matter.

Thanks for any helpful solutions.

Gamma

NOTE:  Yes, I know.  Splitting up a dual channel RAM Kit to use one stick in one computer and the other in the other computer will probably lead to Armageddon, but what can one do, unless one has the resources of a Musk or Sammy Boy....

Sammy Boy....

Unspeakable.

That guy is really....unspeakable....

Get used to it, Micron announced it's pulling out of the consumer markets to concentrate on ECC RAM

That's one inconvenience, now wait until you need a new hard drive....and if you want a 24 or 30 TB HD, good luck with that - they're buying all of it.

At some point when huge manufacturers like Micron pull out of one market so they can repurpose their manufacturing capacity to the higher end which they sell directly to these data center fillers there will be nothing left in normal distribution channels / the rest of us, even on the business side of things where you order from national distributors (in Europe) we are seeing multi month lead times on some high end components - that's Feb 2026 for big Hard Drives!

Just yesterday I read an article about Samsung on Slashdot, check it out :

Micron ... there's a blast from the past.   My first real computer (1995 ?), and was excellent, until it wasn't.   Seems every few months it would have issues.  Sent in couple times for repair, then rinse & repeat.

Couldn't get support to keep it for a refund, so tracked down the CEO's address & shipped it to him :cheesy:

After it arrived, I called him, and asked for an appointment to discuss the refund in person.   Ask what day was good for him, as need to book FC seat 😎

Can only imagine what 'WTF' thought was going through his head.   He transferred the call to his head of customer service, who checked the repair / return record, and issued a refund within a day.

It was really fast and top rated at the time, until it wasn't, and damn annoying, as I had just started trading stocks, and needed a dependable PC.  I made good money on their stock though, as shot up in the beginning, since rave reviews of Micron, until they weren't, and competition caught up to them.

Do check the specs of your existing RAM,

confirm it supports both profiles Intel XMP and AMD EXPO.

If it does not support AMD EXPO you may have issues with compatibility, speed.

I'm old enough to remember paying about $100 to add 64K of ram to my first Tandy computer.

On YouTube you find old videos showing the latest invention: potable computers / laptops. Size of carry on baggage. Price like 4000+ $

I actually convinced my company to buy me one of the first Mac luggables for over $5,000 because I was doing presentations in customer offices.  It was the size of a suitcase and probably weighed 15 pounds.

At the time, Macs were the only ones that had the graphics capabilities we needed.  Grayscale.

Sorry I deleted my content.

Don't want to deviate.

Obviously the times of ever falling hardware prices have come to an end.

We've heard that before, and then someone jumps in to fill in the capacity and it's back to more bang for less buck.

More and more, I'm seeing forecasts of the collapse of the AI bubble, at least on the funding side if not the technical.  I don't claim to know if it'll come to pass, but if the money moves out of AI and data centers, we could see some kickass deals on amazing gaming machines.

So, this implies, maybe, that it might not work well on AMD boards?

I would disagree until I check this.

Is there anything which might cause one to believe that this will not work on an AMD MB?, even though it states that it is optimized for Intel MBs?

Yes.

The trend will continue.

More power for less money, or less cost, due to miniaturization and doing more with less.

So, the RAM prices and the exploding GPU prices cannot last.

It is only a temporary problem for those wishing to build computers at this moment in history.

If we could just get rid of SAMMY BOY, who is using resources to prop up his failures, and his failing company, which is true disaster for humanity, then RAM prices would collapse.

the PROBLEM is that we DO NOT NEED all this REDUNDANCY from suppliers of AI.

Get rid of OpenAI, and then keep Elon and Gemini, and maybe DeepSEEK, too.

And, all will be fine.

But, OpenAI is a disaster, and the world does not need the company or Sammy.

Who knows what is happening at Facebook.

The true fact is that Gemini is so far ahead now that the other companies will not catch up.

And so, they are wasting resources just by trying to stay in the race.

Of course, the AI Bubble will happen, meaning that the losers will die, as will their demand for hardware, when most commoners, the Proles, realize the need to switch to Elon and Gemini, who will become the recognized leaders within the next 6 months.

I might have a solution to your immediate problem, GG.

It so happens that I have spare 64GB of RAM lying around, Corsair Vengeance RGB 64GB 5600MHz DDR5 CL40 DIMM (2x32GB) Black (CMH64GX5M2B5600Z40K).

Bought it just over a year ago for a build that, in the end, never materialized. Used it in my current rig to pump up the total RAM to 128GB, but something that ASUS doesn’t tell you is that they support XMP in only two memory slots. So couldn’t get the advertised 5600MHz to work and gave up after a few months and removed it.

I could be persuaded to part with it, for a nominal price, as I’m not planning any new builds for the next year.

PM me if you’re interested.

My very =sincere= thanks to you for your extremely kind offer.

Please let me think about it, maybe for a few weeks, while I decide my next build, and I will definitely PM you, and let you know.

Anyway, this is a very kind offer you have made to me.

I appreciate it...!!!

TRULY.

Thank you.

Note: To buy this DRAM would cost, at the moment, about USD800, or maybe more, as you obviously realize.  Tks!!!

I will PM you in a couple or three days.....

My 'solution' is to use DDR3 ram compatible hardware until it can no longer function  😋 ...by then either the A.I bubble will have burst  or other chip fabricators will have filled the gap bringing prices back to 'normal'

I still have ecc ram ddr3 lying somewhere, 128gb of em... hahaha

I guess i was lucky to upgrade my entire rig early this year to 9800x3d with 2x 32gb ddr5

I like this solution.

Is DDR3 now easily available?

I have heard that it is not.

Just for arguments sake...

How much is 64GB of DDR3, anyway, at the present time.

Anyway, if anyone plans to use the computer until the MB dies, maybe up to 12 years, would such a board accept DDR5 and still be DDR3?

Maybe, or...

Maybe Not:

image.png.b51ad7b9becd4246ee01b26081385248.png

I have two other desktops which are DDR3, and each has 16GB of DRAM, which I purchased sometime around 2015, give or take a year.

Still very useful for a lot of things.

I do not use Windows, so I don't need to worry about MS operating system policy of artificially created obsolescence.

Yes.

Either very lucky or..

Very powerful foresight.

Rather a nice synopsis of the RAM situation done by a smart guy with 1.5 million followers on YouTube.

(Maybe it's his bowl-cut hair style that makes him so popular? No. It's due to his due diligence in doing his research before uploading his videos, one might imagine.)

Definitely worth a watch.

Do you believe that the CHINESE are coming?

Are they coming, and will they soon be here...

In time to save the world from having ONLY TWO main manufacturers of DRAM?

Having only two manufacturers, worldwide, of anything, is a terrible scenario, and a recipe for disaster...

As we have seen, just late 2025.

Here is a vid which speaks to: Can the CHINESE correct the imbalance in World Manufacture of DRAM, and how soon?

We need a reliable supplier, a third supplier, now that MICRON has backed out.

This manufacture and supply demand imbalance cannot last.

Will CHINA save the day, in the end?

I say....YES....

I am so glad there are The Chinese in this world.

When will we see China dumping DDR5 DRAM on world markets?

Probably not for some time to come.

Still, progress is being made in China.

Another interesting vid from this good channel.

If you have any interest in desktop computers, then you probably know this guy with the LONG HAIR...

Nice report outlining progress being made by two companies in China who have entered the world DDR5 DRAM market.

And, about time, too....!!!!

Then...

This vid is worth a watch.

It is worth a watch for those hoping to, once again, be able to buy consumer electronic products, such as computers, phones, game boxes, at FAIR PRICES:

If there is no CRASH, which is a known unknown, then this dude's prognostications may prove correct.

Either way, it looks like far fewer hobbyists will be willing to pay hugely inflated prices just to upgrade a perfectly usable existing desktop computer.

I am glad I will be dead before the world sees the end of this wrenching transition, as the world gears up in order to build the infrastructure..
