Trump is right! Football in the USA should change it's name.

Featured Replies

Who's your Daddy?

At the FIFA Peace (Participation) Prize event, for once Trump emitted a truth that is actually true.

It's silly to call a game that has very little to do with foot play football necessitating calling actual football soccer.

So soccer in the USA should be changed to football, and football in the USA needs a NEW name, yes?

So in the spirit of Daddy's being right at least once in a blue moon, please suggest a NEW NAME for football in the USA?

No, not American football.

An actual new name.

Donald Trump Suggests Renaming NFL in ‘Football vs. Soccer’ Debate

www.si.com/soccer/donald-trump-renaming-nfl-football-vs-soccer-debate

Quote

President Donald Trump urged the United States to settle on the side of “football” when it comes to the name of the world’s most popular sport, even suggesting the National Football League (NFL) should change its name to avoid confusion.

The “football vs. soccer” debate has divided fans across the globe for years. While most of the world calls it “football,” the U.S. has stuck by “soccer” and instead used the term “football” to describe what is widely recognized as American Football, the nation’s top sport.

As he collected the FIFA Peace Prize on stage at the draw for the 2026 World Cup, Trump suggested fans from the United States should find a new name for the NFL so as to avoid any confusion.

“When you look at what has happened to football in the United States, which is soccer in the United States, we seem to never call it [football] because we have a little bit of a conflict with another thing that’s called football,” Trump said.

“But when you think about it, shouldn’t it really be called ... this is football, there’s no question about it. We have to come up with another name for the NFL. It really doesn’t make sense when you think about it.”

Yeah and they throw interceptions too!

What does "hockey" mean?

What does "soccer" mean?

What does "tennis" mean?

You can call it anything I guess, since those words don't mean anything.

The NFL has been trying to go international for 40+ years. They visit Europe a few times per year. Being broad-minded sports lovers, we pop along every time in the hope that we have missed something, and that this sport is not as boring as it proved to be on previous visits. Sadly, we inevitably leave disappointed although TBF the half-time entertainment is often good.

Let's face it, American 'football' is just an inferior version of Rugby which, in turn, is just a bastardised version of football invented by those not skilful enough to play the 'beautiful game'.

Let’s face it, rugby, which should be called dogpile, is a superiorly a gay version of American football as the players wear no protective gear to keep themselves from being groped and fondled by other players.

Definitely requires a new name with explanation.... Footkicker ball brawl?

Just call it Gridiron.

It's not football. Football is football. Football isn't soccer.

Trump is correct yet again.

Probably some truth in that as rugby is mostly popular with public schoolboys! 🤭

I agree with Jonny 😮

Trumpball?

Given that permanent brain damage is a common consequence of playing football, and that black players afflicted with the syndrome were being discriminated against when it came to payouts, I concur. Trumpball is an excellent choice.

How can soccer, 90 minutes of almost non-stop action, be compared with the USAs version of Rugby, but wearing protective clothing and stop/start all the game.

Trump is such a sick puppy NFL will survive longer this boy child.

Soccer became Association Football and Rugby Football. Then because there was already American Football, it became soccer in the USA, while Rugby just became Rugby and American  Football (which was a lot kickier when founded)

I think Novacova has it right. Rugby is basically gay rough sex. Which I guess means it could be considered beautiful in its own way.

Soccer was an abbreviation for Associated Football, to distinguish it from Rugby Football, which also does use the foot so much.

Hockey was first used in 1527 from the French word hoc, meaning hook. as does Tennis from French tenez meaning take or hold

Well in any case, I think a new (to English) word with some kind of connection to the game might be on the right track.

With that, there would be a plethora of possibilities.

Here's one:

RUGBEO

A new word in English that is the Esperanto for rugby (origin sport). It's got a B in the middle like footBall and eo evokes neo, as in a new name / newer rugby related sport. Esperanto as a hoped for international language relates to the (pre maga)  American value of nation built by immigrants from everywhere.

It's got a ring to it, no?

For a new to English word that could does the job, can you beat it?

Real men play rugby, nothing above or to the side

I can't understand why football became more popular, since rugby got it all

Rugby players need no protection from groping and fondling, as unlike American Football, none of that goes on.

American football is more warball and that's very American.

Why anyone ever decided to call NFL football is beyond me, since there is no engagement between the foot and the ball.

Historically in the UK at the beginning of the 20th century, football meant rugby.  What is now called football was named Association Football - called that from its inception as a sport in the 1860s, and commonly referred to as Association, which was shortened to soccer. Ironically, the term soccer was later seen by the Brits as an Americanism (which is isn't), and the use of "football" overtook it to make it more British.
