Someone rumoured the Thailand-Cambodia tension was making the Trat islands (Koh Chang, Koh Kood) less fully booked than on previous years. Is there any truth in this?

Any Brits following the advice of the British Foreign Office may avoid the area......

Thailand travel advice - GOV.UK

Still current at: 13 December 2025

Updated: 12 December 2025
Latest update:
FCDO now advises against all travel to within 50km of the whole border with Cambodia except for Koh Chang, Koh Kood and the other islands in between them, where FCDO continues to advise against all but essential travel.

Unless their travel is "essential" of course, ignoring the advice may invalidate travel insurance.

  • Well done, Donald. That should last another five minutes or so. It won’t be the end of it since both parties suffer greatly with that need to preserve face but more importantly that ambiguous border a

  • Good intentions but the ceasefire holding is a long shot as it was originally. Of course this thread will rapidly descend into anti-Trump rants.

destroying the GOP and America.

So this is trumps third time. That means he stopped 3 wars.  Wow!  He’s so good at ceasefires. If they fire at each other again and he opens his mouth, he will have stopped four wars.

The UK Foreign Office has said that only essential travel for border including Trat and Koh Chang, we have booked to go in January to Koh Chang. 2 of our party want to cancel but I am thinking an Island should be safe unless it escalated into something much bigger. Would you risk it or look for somewhere else.

At this point it feels like Thailand and Cambodia are just clowning Trump and each other. Everyone trying to make everyone else look bad in the eyes of the other

They are still firing artillery where I am and have done so since 6 am.

Others news sources claim the ceasefire is scheduled to start "this evening".  I can't find any specific time or time zone.  But it's not unusual for combatants to get a few extra licks in before the deadline.

Post back at dawn and let us know...

"that ambiguous border also affects maritime lines. "

I don't understand this.

How does the border ambiguity affect maritime lines?

Isn't this an inland border?

There are indications of significant oil and gas reserves in disputed offshore areas.  If they can play nice, they can share in the proceeds.  If they don't, nobody can drill in the area.

Plenty of Trump haters hoping for him to fail regardless of the consequences for innocent civilians caught up in this,   What on earth is wrong with you people?

Just shows how strong the hatred for Trump truly is! I doubt that any American politician in history has ever been so detested by so many people.

I don't think there are that many who hate him, its just that those that do are very vocal, the idea being that if you say something loud enough and often enough it will become accepted as the truth     most of the haters have absolutely no idea why they hate him, its a social media / leftist / virtue signalling thing

Well That didn't last very long.....

as an addendum to my previous reply which i was too late to edit, He was not so detested when it mattered most was he?  Did all the haters simply forget to vote?

Or could it be that cackling Kamala and tampon tim were understandably detested even more ?

Hardly Trumps fault , and I don't see anybody else trying to stop the fighting, do you?

presumably the persons who thumbed down my comment feels that hundreds or more deaths are justified collateral damage, just as long as it reflects badly on Trump     Astonishing

The conflict stems from long-standing territorial disputes related to a 1907 map drawn during Cambodia's French colonial period, which Thailand disputes.

I don't beleive this. Strange that things really only kicked off this year after the release of the recodring of Paetongtarn Shiawatra and Hun Sen in mid June 2025. What is really to blame? Thai politics? (seems most likely) or money? (border scam centres or casinos) or something else? I very much doubt that dispute over the territority is nothing but a convenient excuse.

Whatever the reasons, peace is needed now between both sides as ordinary people are suffering.

It flares up every few years or so. As long as I have been going to Thailand it has been a problem.

In a significant diplomatic move, the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to renew a ceasefire following several days of deadly clashes. US President Donald Trump made the announcement on social media after speaking with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. The renewed truce aims to halt all shooting and adhere to the original peace accord facilitated by Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

An escalation in cross-border violence threatened the original ceasefire that Malaysia brokered in July. Despite the initial agreement, Thailand and Cambodia engaged in a propaganda war and minor skirmishes persisted. The conflict stems from long-standing territorial disputes related to a 1907 map drawn during Cambodia's French colonial period, which Thailand disputes.

Recent escalations saw Thailand employing jet fighters against military targets, while Cambodia used BM-21 rocket launchers, which damaged residential areas near the border. Thailand also reported destroying a crane at the Preah Vihear temple site, suspected of housing Cambodian military equipment. The renewed ceasefire seeks to avert further escalation of a more significant conflict between the two countries, reported AP via Thai Newsroom.

Key Takeaways:

  • Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to renew a ceasefire amid border clashes.
  • US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim played key roles in the negotiation.
  • The conflict has historical roots in a disputed 1907 map during Cambodia's French colonial period.
