Foreign Man Caught Cheating Bangkok Curry Challenge for ฿20,000

A well-known curry restaurant in Bangkok has exposed a foreign customer for cheating during an eating challenge to claim a 20,000-baht cash prize. The incident prompted the restaurant to publicly revoke its congratulations after reviewing CCTV footage. The case has raised concerns among venues that run competitive eating events.

Gold Curry is a popular Bangkok restaurant known for Japanese-style rice curry served in very large portions, alongside timed eating challenges. The restaurant offers a range of incentives, including free meals, vouchers and cash prizes, depending on portion size and completion time. Challenges range from finishing a two-kilogramme curry in 15 minutes to consuming a 10-kilogramme portion within one hour for a 40,000-baht reward.

The 20,000-baht challenge requires participants to finish an eight-kilogramme rice curry within 45 minutes. On December 12, Gold Curry’s official Facebook page shared photographs congratulating a foreign man who appeared to complete this challenge in 40 minutes. The images showed restaurant staff presenting him with the 20,000-baht cash prize immediately after he finished the dish.

However, on December 18, the restaurant announced that the customer had been caught cheating during the contest. Staff reviewed CCTV footage after internal concerns were raised about his behaviour during the challenge. The restaurant later shared clips from the footage in the comment section of its Facebook post as evidence.

In the video, the man is seen eating the curry with his hands while repeatedly glancing around the restaurant. At several points, he appears to grab portions of rice and quickly place them into his trouser pockets. Gold Curry stated that he repeated this action multiple times, enabling him to finish the dish with five minutes remaining.

The restaurant warned other establishments, particularly those that host eating challenges, to remain cautious of this individual. Gold Curry did not confirm whether it plans to take legal action or demand the return of the prize money. No further details about the man’s identity were disclosed.

The incident has highlighted the challenges restaurants face in monitoring competitive eating events. Gold Curry has not announced any changes to its challenge rules or supervision procedures. It remains unclear whether additional safeguards will be introduced to prevent similar incidents in the future.

8 kg of food? Hell it'd feed 20. These eating challenges are just another symptom of the social depravity (before you jump on me; calm down I don't mean "the gays" - I mean the inverted incentive and reward structures) spreading from West to East. And I thought I might hide from it here. Oh well, anyone got a ticket to... I'd say Mars but I'm worried it's not far enough - might need a new solar system.

And when he stood up to take the money, no-one noticed ?

So they got lazy and paid the price . They couldn't spend the time to watch he ate it all so their stupidity. 😄

I think it's plausible.  Santa Claus does this sort of thing, so maybe he wasn't cheating, just stuffing food in his pants.  (Dan Aykroyd-Trading Places 1983).

I was wondering where the hang em high mob had disappeared to🤣🙃

Unless he goes around in specially made loose-fitting pants with plastic-lined pockets, how much rice could he pocket without the bulges and curry stains being extremely obvious?

They could do a  version of that at the UK prison where the hunger strikers are staying ?

One prisoner gets to eat ten meals ?

He looks like the kid of barfines and powerlines and cheap charlie chronicles😂

I heard that they caught the guy, but he had already spent all the money on anti-diarrhea medication and toilet paper.

You think I'm an American because I dislike end stage capitalism? Most Americans seem to love it for some reason.
