Thai Party Plans to Axe 1,000 and 500 Baht Notes

Another stupid idea in a long list of stupid ideas. Sounds to me more of a power grab and basically making the economy cashless, which will backfire massively, as Thailand simply won't simplify it all so that local Thais, tourists, and businesses aren't effected. Sooner or later, people the world over are going to realise that you do need cash as a backup/alternative.

As said by others above, India tried this and it was a farcical joke and lesson in ineptitude, plus most serious criminals don't bother much with cash now, it's all crypto... much safer for them. On top of that, making the notes all plastic does throw a bit of a spanner in the works for forgers as it's harder to conterfeit the cash.

The person in this article advocating for this is doing the bidding of the financial system and banks/governments so they can go all China style on everyone... all about control.

The plastic notes (horribly inconvenient) only benefit the sole company in the world which manufactures them--CCL Secure. Be interesting to know how much each note costs.

  • What a moronic idea.

  • Yet more pushing for a digital panopticon  we should all hope this idiotic idea fails totally.

  • Inconveniencing 99% of the population and 100% of tourists because they can't (or won't) tackle corrupt government workers and politicians.

50 and 25 Satang. Usually given as change at the likes of BigC, Tesco etc. and finish up in the local temple donation box.

definitely not bronze.

Sad that crypto was usurped by finance bros and then regulated into oblivion as a tool for commerce. It really did (does) give everybody sovereignty over their cash.

The corrupt police will only accept 100 Baht notes now?

Hundred dollar notes make much more sense.

Who are The Thai Pakdee Party?

Judging by this weird idea, a bunch of weirdos.

Here’s an alternative, have an efficient police force investigate any and all corrupt practices and swiftly implement draconian punishments instead of sweeping them under the rug as misunderstandings. May be worth a try 🤷

The 500 Euro note was withdrawn in April, 2019

Not really withdrawn. They only stopped printing them, but they are still legal tender.

A 1,000 baht bill is a whopping 30 dollars....Hardly a high value bill,And the 500 baht is worth 15 whole dollars.

The 100 sgd Singapore bill is worth 2,420 baht

Singapore also has a 1,000 sgd and a 10,000 sgd bills that are still in use but being phased out out......

Thanks for that little bit of perspective  in my opinion cash is still king, some of us feel naked without a bundle of cash in our pockets, and many of us find it completely ridiculous when somebody is fumbling  around with their phone for 7 minutes trying to pay for a cup of coffee.

I've been in shops where somebody's taking a long time to try to pay 20 or 30 baht with their phone and I just handed them the cash and said here please finish up so we can get on with our day.

Difficult to hide a hundred or two in their pockets.

He outlined a broader anti-corruption plan, including harsher penalties for financial crimes, such as the death penalty for embezzling over 100 million baht, with executions mandatory within 15 days and no royal pardon eligibility.

Mr T will poop himself

just bring in mandatory  publlic death sentence in a very painful way for politicians, bureaucrats and police  found guilty of corruption by public meetings  .  no courts or big wigs in the loop  ..  The problem would soon be solved

Folks, this little currency announcement stunt by this fly-by-night party.

Was nothing more than a trial balloon just to gauge the public's reaction...

Notice how no one of any importance wanted their name connected to this trial balloon.....

India did similar on 8 November 2016 when PM Modi declared that 1000 and 500 rupiah notes would become worthless at midnight.

The guys that refill the ATM will need to work a lot of overtime to keep them stocked with red notes.

I immediately thought of that as well, although I couldn't remember when it was. I wonder how successful that has been in the time since then?

Great

Now I need to buy a wheelbarrow for my wife to carry her shopping cash  :omfg:

Doesn't have a rats chance in hell.

Tremendous hardship a few years ago in India cancelling the 500 Rupee notes. Chaos.

Eliminate the 1000 and 500 bills, sure, no problems. Most high rolling criminals deal with bitcoins anyways. It won't affect them, only the local criminals or those that receives their tea money in a neat envelope.

Who it would really piss off is all the tourists who don't have a Thai bank account. Unless the have a plan to let tourists use their own countries debit card in stores, restaurents, hotels, etc. Most likely be the end of small tourist dependent operators.

I only have a bank account for my 400K visa money but I've used my UK Visa bank card, and possibly Mastercard as well, on a few occasions. The last time was to draw cash in September and the first was around 2007/8. I've used it to pay for goods as well, but it does come with foreign currency transaction fees as well. I have had cards where there were no fees but I don't know how common they are.

I applaud the intention of this plan but I doubt it would be successful in practice.

A few years ago, I bought my car here with cash, all in 1000 notes. I can still see the girl counting them. When I asked if she didn't have a counting machine, she had to admit that she didn't.
That's going to be something when I buy my next car (if I ever do).

Incidentally, the 500 euro note still exists.

A bank cheque only takes 15 minutes and a few hundred Baht = Much easier and more secure! Done it 3 times now over 25 years.

It all depends on where the cash came from!

De La Rue also produce the polymer substrate, plus they print banknotes for some countries, including the UK I think.

I don't know how much they cost to produce, but I know they last longer, so that has to be taken into account. I think they are harder to fake as well, which if true, will have some financial benefit.

I'm not sure any of this will impact on the effectiveness of the plan in question.

If I did that, I would immediately get questions from my bank. It's not that easy anymore these days, everything revolves around control, control and more control.

I don't use my UK Visa debit card often but I've used it without problems, including in September. I did use cash to buy my car in 2012, but that was because my sister in law wanted to see what that amount of bank notes looked like, between 700K and 800K I think. Now if I tried to do that in the UK I would have questions to answer.

Why not just try and  cancel bitcoin which seems to be the preferred "currency" of big time crooks?

Well ... there is Gold , Diamonds et et to substitute cash . BTW 1000 bhat is 27 € ... 😴
