Thailand's government is considering establishing a Disneyland theme park in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) as a key project to elevate tourism and improve transportation infrastructure. Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, indicated that this endeavor would serve as a major tourism attraction, bolstering passenger numbers for the high-speed rail connecting Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and U-tapao airports. This move also aims to support the delayed development of U-tapao airport and its adjacent aviation city.

The initiative has already sparked interest among Thai investors, although specific details are currently under wraps. Previous conversations with Sports Authority of Thailand governor, Gongsak Yodmani, underscored the need for extensive sports facilities, including an 80,000-seat football stadium and a large indoor arena. Despite the substantial investment in these venues, Phiphat recognized they would not be sufficient to attract a steady stream of daily visitors.

To counter this, the government is exploring a major theme park addition, with proposed sizes ranging from 960 to 3,000 rai, amounting to a total development area of approximately 5,000 rai. Phiphat emphasized the unique opportunity for Thailand to host Southeast Asia's first Disneyland, which could establish the nation as a regional tourism leader. Additionally, Disney's strict policies against casinos eliminate any plans for casino-linked entertainment in the vicinity of the park.

Phiphat mentioned the government's dual approach to bringing Disneyland to Thailand: either through direct investment by Disney or acquiring a licence to operate the park independently. The concept is part of broader efforts to create a tourism magnet that integrates with and enhances the surrounding infrastructure, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand proposes Disneyland in EEC to boost tourism and transport.

  • The theme park would complement sports venues and attract daily visitors.

  • Disney’s criteria forbid casinos near the potential park location.

It has to be built and it will take many years to take the decision first, and than building according to the standards that Disney has. Her in Thailand all will take a few decades, and nobody can see the future, but I am wondering if Thailand is still attractive for tourists at that time. If the country goes on like this and stay conservative, political unstable, and double pricing and outdated laws, bad air quality and too expensive, it is going to fail.

bolstering passenger numbers for the high-speed rail connecting Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and U-tapao airports

🤣🤣🤣

Might be a cool idea, but don't forget that while dreams are a great thing, they don't always come true...whistling

«"If you can dream it, you can do it" is strongly associated with Walt Disney and his inspirational legacy, he never actually said it; the quote was written by Sheralyn Silverstein for the Horizons attraction at Epcot and later became popularized as his, perfectly fitting the Disney ethos but not his words.»

Disney is notoriously strict about partners. They have turned down Thailand before (reportedly citing corruption risks in earlier Phuket talks). Any deal would likely be a licensing model (like Tokyo Disneyland), where Thai investors build/operate but Disney enforces high standards, IP control, and oversight — reducing room for local graft.?

I agree. I also had to pay 5 times more than a local in Universal Studios.

Would Disney spend a zillion dollars to build this if they could not own the land 100%........A 99 year lease I dont think would cut it with Disney..

We already have Disney Land for men in Soi 6

I think Vietnam would be a better option. Too many hands waiting to be enriched here in Thailand. Ehh maybe Vietnam as well, but here it clearly apparent.

Maybe on that vacant block next to View Talay 5 at Jomtien that was recently discussed on this forum! OK, 5,000 rai, might have to demolish a few buildings as well.

The entire place is a veritable wonderland of amazement. Move over Disney, welcome to Dismaland. Theme park Thailand, where all your dreams come true, a little bit, maybe, nah, not really.

Pretty sure this would be a Disney decision, rather than a Thai one...

...regardless, it will never happen.

By the time this happens, Thailand may be part of the Khmer Empire again!

Imagine a venue where you could barfine Snow White or even Cruella DeVille (hey, I don't judge what guys like...).

Are they really still wasting there time on these puerile ideas where they assume one fantastical attraction is going to draw in tourists like never before. Give me a phukin break!

This place already feels a bit like Disneyland on some levels. I wonder if the world really needs another Disneyland. The pricing is so out of control all but a few Thai people could afford to visit.

You have to admire the chutzpha. Automatically thinking Disney would just leap for joy at the chance to build a theme park out in the sticks in an area with not a lot going for it. When the Disney brass stops laughing, they might be enticed to consider a Bangkok Disney, perhaps somewhere between Bangkok and Pattaya.

I have been thinking they should have pursued this 10 years ago, now they shouldn't let the plans slip as another competing destination nearby snatches up the opportunity

What's the difference between Phiphat and Walt Disney.

Phiphat wants to build a theme park, but Walt Disney
