‘Make no mistake, this is an occupation’: ICE’s deadly presence

Minneapolis finds itself in upheaval as an overwhelming ICE presence grips the city. Streets are deserted, shops shuttered, and fear palpable as residents adjust to life amidst the most extensive federal immigration operation on record.

From dawn, the frostbitten streets see Jac Kovarik on the prowl, eyes peeled for ICE vehicles. Where Renee Good fell to a federal officer's bullet, silence prevails. Commuters and morning shoppers are scarce as agents make arrests at every turn, turning daily life upside down.

"It's an occupation," declares Angela Conley, Hennepin County Commissioner. The Trump administration's deployment of 3,000 armed agents, now outnumbering local police five to one, paints a tense picture. Ryan Pérez of nonprofit Copal describes it as a relentless intrusion affecting Latine families.

Renee Good's tragic death has sparked statewide protests, with Trump threatening to invoke the Insurrection Act. As federal forces and right-wing influencers descend, the atmosphere becomes charged, with Somali businesses facing unwarranted scrutiny.

The city's response is defiant. Residents wield orange whistles; a signal of impending ICE encounters. Mutual aid efforts surge, with community members rallying to offer support and essentials, transforming ordinary establishments into havens for those in need.

Chaos escalates as ICE penetrates deeper into suburbs and rural areas. Fear of unexpected apprehension leads residents to carry identification, even on simple errands. The ACLU steps in, launching a lawsuit challenging alleged racial profiling.

Daisy Martinez's harrowing story of her husband's arrest while their child looked on highlights the human toll. Families are left grappling with uncertainty, and the weight of these events looms large in Minnesota.

Amidst adversity, the community stands united. Volunteer patrols document ICE activities to keep everyone informed. Residents like Nimco Omar confront ICE officers, asserting their rights, with videos spreading awareness online.

As dusk envelops the city, the struggle continues. Minneapolis stands under siege but remains unbowed. "We’re more determined as they send more agents," asserts Kovarik. With resilience and solidarity, the city fights to reclaim normalcy.

On the suburban fringe, ICE's reach extends, stoking fear in shopping centers and restaurants. Reports surface of agents arresting workers at the very establishments they visit. Community efforts intensify to counteract the pervasive atmosphere of dread.

Across Minneapolis, businesses display defiant messages: "Federal agents are not permitted" and "Fuck ICE." At Pow Wow Grounds cafe, patrons knock to enter—a snapshot of the altered reality.

Volunteer hubs proliferate, with locals contributing food and supplies. The Franklin Avenue East Cultural District, a hub of Native American culture, turns into a sanctuary of support and sustenance.

Rev. Ashley Horan mobilizes financial support, transferring $20-25,000 from donors to those in dire need. Her message is clear: the situation in Minneapolis could unfold anywhere, urging other communities to be ready.

As winter's early sunset casts long shadows, the city redefines resilience. Parents reconsider evening activities, adjusting to ensure safety amid unpredictability. School closures reflect the widespread impact, with online classes becoming the norm.

ICE encounters push the city council's patience, as even officials face aggression. Onlookers and protesters bear witness, standing as testaments to the community's strength against federal intimidation.

The undeniable tension shapes a narrative of resistance and hope. Despite the challenges, Minneapolis stands firm, demanding justice and change.

Key Takeaways

  • ICE crackdown transforms Minneapolis into a city under siege!

  • Community resilience grows amid sweeping federal crackdown!

  • The struggle highlights national implications for immigration policy!

Why is IC not going into the gang areas where the real criminals are?

Afraid to get killed?

These Americans living in Minneapolis:

They are WAY-OVERREACTING...

Have they never lived under REAL Martial Law, for years?

They seem like such CHILDREN, to me.

They no inkling of what the world is really like.

Just a bunch of HELICOPTER-CHILDREN...

Their parents never told them what life is like outside their state, and outside the USA.

Why is that?

Maybe these radical judges and democratic saps in local governments should keep these criminals locked up instead of releasing them in the first place. It is so out of hand now is why the Insurrection Act is required. And then the military can engage the gangs. Letting ICE stay on mission

How you can resist from Thailand

Boycott ALL American goods and services for a minimum of between now and November mid-terms. Stop buying American. Buy European, Canadian, Chinese, Japanese, South American, SE Asian.

Stop funding the fascist racist US government. Take money out of US dollar denominated assets. Boycott Treasuries. Delay paying taxes as long as possible and delay making minimum RMD IRA withdrawals until after mid-term elections.

Register to vote in November and make sure you know how to vote if your ballot doesn't arrive in a timely manner.

Why is a British newspaper so interested in what's going on in the US and constantly attacking Trump?

Yes, those damn racists in Minneapolis ... where only 3 out of 4 candidates for mayor were Black.

How can we tolerate this racism?

Confused and deluded much by fake news lately?

Led Zeppelin, man. You're dazed and confused.

Some people may still be racist, but not the government.

And just while I'm at it, I'd like to have a word with Eliza Doolittle.

You are obviously TOTALLY ignorant of WWII history, and the tactics that the Nazis used to come into power. Trump, Stephen Miller, Project 25 are following the exact same playbook. Read your history. Just one question for Mr. 'Don't Worry your Pretty Little Heads' over what ICE is doing in MN and elsewhere in the country. What do you imagine will become of this 20,000 right wing para-military army once the immigration issues start to die down? Do you think, perhaps, they could be used in a coup attempt? You better wake up, Eliza.

They are illegals, from countries where people are predominantly hispanic or black ... simple explanation.

'JUSTICE IS COMING': Homan on who is funding anti-ICE protests

they will announce it soon ...

you are allowed to protest, but not impede an agent.

More moronic comments from you. Of course, I was referring to the US Federal government not the local MN government.

Local MN govt seems to be doing sth very corrupt.

Even if these illegals have commited crimes, they are shielding them from ICE. It's a "sanctuary city".

Yea round them up put them to work….perhaps building Donald’s wall…..feed them starvation rations……keep the (camps) totally self sufficient unto death ehh??throw a bit of sadistic cruelty into it and voila!!!there ya go!!…..personally I’m on board with the resistance…if Donald tryed to do this in a professional manner things would be different but he needs drama and distraction.this sad tragic time will go down in history as worse than what happened to Americans of Japanese descent during ww2 in my view.a sad black mark on our history a nation of immigrants…..the groundswell of revulsion to trumps inhumanity towards our immigrants reflects this as it should.

If blue states and cities cooperated with federal authorities with arresting the murderers, rapists, pedos, human traffickers, drug traffickers, violent gang members etc., who entered the US illegally when Biden thought it would be a good idea to throw the borders wide open rather than protecting them "things would be different". As for your post as a whole it's completely unhinged.

Greenland ... hopefully conflict is avoided.

I just watched a press conference with Trump. He is promising to take care of the Venezuelans. He doesn't seem to be planning to throw them under a bus, and I'm sure it will be the same for Greenland.

But otherwise, Trump considers NATO a drain on US taxpayer money and no longer serves the purpose of the US. But I don't see you complaining that NATO has been sucking US taxpayer money for decades with a permanent dependency on US military protection.

Still, The Guardian is playing dirty to be publishing fake stories about ICE to get Americans all dazed and confused and agitated.

I was thinking more along the lines of the 25th Amendment.
