You gotta love the poor people who harbor such an irrational fear of pathogens (Mysophobia) that they wear masks on an open beach surrounded by nothing be clean fresh air. 😕
I didn't understand that during the Covid scare, I don't get it today. It's illogical and counterintuitive. However, I see that behavior even today. These poor people must be psychological basket-cases. Well - each to their own. I'm sure they feel "safe" although they look ridiculous, in my own humble opinion that is. Surrounded by clean, fresh, ocean air, but opt instead to re-breath your own exhalations. 🤔 Nope - I don't get it.

Nearly all of most farang ken on Pattaya have big bellies , sweating , puffing

Why don't you exercise if your over 60 this is the answer I'm looking for

I mean sometimes I hear stories from old-timers in Pattaya ,oh I use to be a champion rugby player etc

My Theory is recovery ...you tried the exercise say at a gym and your recovery is low which is understandable your mind becomes lazy and your body tired

I plan to do boxing whilst I'm in Pattaya maybe even Muay Thai ...can I go full at it ....no not at my age , but I'm trying unlike many of you who look far far older than your age

Is alcohol a killer to recovery after 60 ...please let me know

Do you need more carbs after 60

Why are you not exercising after 60 ,,, I realised we can't do it everyday ..but at least 3 times a week

Why ?

Tiredness ? Not interested? Too much effort / pain in getting out of breath? Too much recovery time??

Pain ?

You really should be doing boxing or muay Thai training ..I'm not talking about hitting hard in talking about stamina

What about running a few times a week past 60??

Knee problems then WALK

That would be more cardio then than strength

Once watched a program (British I think) called "Trust me I am a Doctor" - had a team of doctors that did experiments regularly about "hot topic" one of which was which is better, heavy weights or light weights with more lifts - seems like the time limit of that experiment was 8 weeks and the final results stated that muscle mass increase and strength was equal. I switched to the lighter weight (2/3 of max) then lift until exhausted. As it gets easier add more weight. Have done this for several years - I am reaching 80 later this year. Still do the weights 2-3 times a week for 90 minutes - 5 sets per exercise with rest dropping heart rate back below 90 between sets. I don't have any injuries. I also do aerobic walking 3-5 kilometers per day, and core exercises daily at 5 AM for 45min. I do not have a fat belly but I also eat really well IAW the healthiest foods by Dr. William Li ( Diet to beat disease). I personally enjoy exercising . Until 65 I did 5-10 miles jogging every day rain or shine but worried about knee damage as I ran on sidewalks and paved roads. life is good, no medicines, haven't had a headache even this century. The WHO recommends 75-150 minutes per week of exercise depending on intensity. More than 4 times that has not shown any negative effects IAW Dr. Li.

These people eat take away food mostly because they are too fking lazy to grocery shop, food preparation, cook and clean.

I don't think there are many from the UK in that bracket who are over 60.

I am 63, and that kind of decay in British society occurred between 10 and 15 years after my current age group.

Furthermore, I was born and educated in the days of Nuns' schools, 11 plus exams for grammar school, etc. Yes, we came from council housing, but we were very proud of our houses.

We were poor but proud; we made do and mended our clothing; we never begged; we worked as soon as we left school and went into apprenticeships or, in my case, the HM Forces.

Gardens were well-kept, front steps were scrubbed, spring-cleaning was the norm, and so were spotless empty milk bottles left for collection on the doorstep.

I can wash, cook from scratch (so can my two sons), iron, sew, organise, and make myself presentable without any assistance from anyone.

How about taking just 5 minutes and reflecting on your own life? Let us know what your own weaknesses are, talk about your own fallacies, and talk about something that you can actually affect change upon, rather than judging all of humanity around you, which is really tiresome, ridiculously judgmental, and incredibly lazy intellectually.

Start with yourself, you're the only one you can change.

Judge tenderly, if you must. There is usually a side you have not heard, a story you know nothing about, and a battle waged that you are not having to fight.

We can never judge the lives of others, because each person knows only their own pain and renunciation. It's one thing to feel that you are on the right path, but it's another to think that yours is the only path.

Paulo Coehlo

When we come to judge others it is not by ourselves as we really are that we judge them, but by an image that we have formed of ourselves from which we have left out everything that offends our vanity or would discredit us in the eyes of the world.

That would be fine, if folk were accountable for their lifestyle.

Western public hospital systems are becoming overloaded with diabetes, knee, hip replacements and other health issues often related to lifestyle choices. Then people groan their government isn't spending enough on health, which is tad ironic, given it is lack of healthy lifestyle options causing increasing public medical spending.

Can understand why sensible healthy people are judgemental with lazy fatties at the trough.

Unfortunately, it's not just seniors but now many young folk to varying degrees eat crap, glued to computer games rather than join up with their local sports team.

I agree. There's absolutely no health benefit whatsoever, nor is there any medical reason to wear a mask outdoors and in wide open spaces, or on a motorbike. Unless it's at least an N95 mask, and it's being used for pollution and dust. All those cheap surgical masks do, is to help you from spreading what you already have.

I see it all the time and it multiple levels beyond inane.

I'm guessing that means you went the first 68 years eating carbs and fiber, and adopted the Keto to reduce bodyfat, which it does even though it's supposed to be temporary? This means you had your body used to eating a certain way, and you got to 68, which is actually a good thing, as many don't. That you adopted the keto won't hurt you much now, even if you continue it long term, as your body has been used to a certain diet for decades, and that fiber likely has gotten you to where you are today.

Fiber is indeed necessary , as the gastro system needs it to function correctly, and it feeds that gut microbiome with necessary pre and probiotics. Many people have heart attacks because they eat high fat diets. Many are also eating high sugars, which is a double edged sword, and also have heart problems. At 71, as I'm 69, we can adopt most any diet and still live a long time more, as we've already did what we should have done to get this far. carbs are needed. Just not as many and not the wrong kids most eat that hurt their health.

I'm not sure if you eat any carbs, but just avoid those you mentioned. Your body needs Vitamin C, which the keto can give you if you eat greens or fruits of some kind daily.

I've been under 10% body fat all my life, the higher amount now only because I haven't been training as much as I'm used to, 3-4 times a week for 50 years. When I get back to my routine after we move back to the US, it'll return to what I had earlier, which was 3-6% on average. I eat high carbs, low fat and medium protein. Most meats, fish, veggies, grains, fruits, pasta, bread, cereals, almost no sugar not natural, coffee and tea.

I will adopt the Keto when I return for a short period, just as a change, but I'll never eat high fat as it can lead to heart problems. Many people get heart attacks being lean because of their fat consumption. Training, consistent, surely does help matters.

Alcohol should be minimal, although my plan is to further adopt the Blue Zone diet, which has wine involved. They live the longest.

Make sure to take your mask. The beach air wafting off of the sea is chock full of deadly viruses. Fail to wear a mask and die a horrible death while moaning, "I just wish I had worn my mask on that empty beach." Killer viruses are everywhere. Trying to live a healthy lifestyle and get exercise by walking on near empty beaches can kill a guy. Never can be too safe.

I truly feel blessed as I wake up each morning an see another sunrise. These are all "extras" based on my parents but then I led an entirely different life than they faced. Totally blessed entirely even with VN in my teens and early 20's. Lived and worked in many different countries, some good some bad some okay. Then 20+ years ago retired in paradise and don't really see any change soon. Great family and friends. HAPPY!

If I'm sick and I'm out in public, I will wear a mask if I'm coughing and sneezing. That's to protect other people from snot and phlegm globules which are expelled with coughs and sneezes. Those surgical masks don't keep viruses out. But they will cut down on the amount of droplets you are expelling if you are sick. The only issue there is, I've been in Thailand going on 19 years, and the entire time I've been here, I've come down with two colds and a mild case of Covid. Unlike in the West, I just don't get the seasonal respiratory illnesses that seem to plague the Northern temperate climates. Go figure. 🤔

Dr. William Li published two books on healthy/unhealthy foods in 2023. He gives the good in over 200+ foods and doesn't give one diet, but says within that number of foods, one can definitely find a variety of HEALTHY foods. In many western countries i.e the US between 40-70% of adults are considered to be unhealthy depending on what particular criteria one uses. Dr. Li a reknown Harvard Heart specialist and now food researcher says that all five of the major killers of people can be traced to poor diet and lack of exercise. His two books on "diets" "eat to Beat your Diet" and "Eat to Beat Disease" are available at Kinokuniya bookstore in the Siam Square Area.

Then you move to closed chain knee movements like bicycling. I've always have had knee issues and have opted to cycle instead. However, unlike guys like BMT, I consider the roads too dangerous to cycle on. If I cycle now, I use a stationary bike, but honestly, I prefer walking inclines. I used to do 5 km walks up Doi Suthep back when I lived in CM. You can get a good cardio workout with inclined walking.

Actually, it is far more a young person's problem than a senior's problem.

We grew up without McDonald's, Burger King, Pizza Express, Dunkin' Doughnuts and all that garbage.

True, we had fish and chips, but it was probably once a month.

Food was made from scratch in our house.

Tut, tut, tut just to make it clear there is no competitive challenge. First one home always gets lambasted. Hashing is a problem solving team effort. All supposed to complete the trail together, if they can, but usually in small groups.

The optional drunk socializing together is after the exercise.

I have had Zero knee problems and at 65 began daily walks 10+ kms daily depending on whoever I walked with or by myself rain or shine (except for thunder). I read this week that 10 minutes of walking daily can increase longevity by 15%. But that includes eating well, sleeping well avoiding the bad things in life (alcohol, tobacco, drugs, etc) though I don't preach to anyone about lifestyle, diet, etc but I also do not like people telling me what I should or should not be doing. I still do the daily walk aerobic, weight lifting regularly, and core exercises, no alcohol nor drugs of any type - not even a headache this century. You are very smart about the bicycle based on news stories I see regularly. I used to walk at 3AM zero dark thirty - in the mooban and ran across a 4 meter snake - alerted the guards, one was scared so I helped the young one from the boonies capture the snake which he said he relocated to the jungle in the nearby mountains. After that, wife decided it was not safe enough for me to walk outside so now I walk with a video walk aerobics. Don't have to concern myself with snakes inside the house so far.

Actually the hash run if done properly by the "rabbit" with false trails etc and with a Hash Horn most should finish fairly close to the same time. IF straggling, then a necessary down down will be awarded the rabbit.

Why don't I exercise?

My reasoning is this:

a. The cost of labor, here in Thailand, is extremely low.

b. Therefore, I have chosen to pay others to exercise for me.

c. I can pay a young person to run hills (wind-sprints), or lift weights, for an hour or so, at very low cost.

On Sundays, I pay them extra to run two hours, instead of only one.

When I was living in the PI, the HHH there hosted the world wide HHH - sponsored by Sanmiguel (heard 50K bottles donated) of course, they built a slanted field with a huge screen to show the videos of various scenes, free bus ride from the airport by the government even and lots of other benefits. Fun for all and really enjoyed it as a rabbit had to plan on over 500 runners so a lot different than the normal runs.

^ In Indo some Hashes are subsidized by Bintang. Hash pays (wholesale) for the beer which is dispensed from taps in the side of a panel van from the brewery.🍺

PS. more than 60 is really too many. Most cities split into two groups if there are regularly more than 50 to 60

Is there any logic behind this?

Trying to wash all the milk out of a bottle can require many minutes of hard work to get it truly spotless.

I believe that just a casual rinse would be sufficient, in most cases.

Yeah and many of those holes in some places were within a jungle during night time. Once finished and a local army truck pulled up and soldier poured out trying to figure out what this crowd of foreigners was doing that night. Fortunately several hashers had cards from senior military/police govt officials and all ended up very friendly. Yeah Hashes occur in all types of conditions, floods, earthquakes, hitting all the tourist spots in Rome, many Hashers wore strange costumes too.
