Latest on Udon Thani

I haven't been up there in years must be at least 15 years

I must ask or feel rather compelled to ask the latest updates

I remember going to a farang shop/ cafe / deli run by a British farang which had a British tv show theme , I think it was named after a grocery shop ....is that still there ??

Then there was a hotel bed breakfast resort run by a British guy who used to advertise on those isaan forums and was a gym fanatic had a funny name the hotel

Is that girlie night bar street still there ?

And what about that green Irish pub , had a Irish name , I think the guy was trying to sell it , oh I'm going back 15 years ago

I went in there and had a meal, bangers n mash

I guess Udon Thani is no longer the friendly place where all expats knew each other

I go there. Nice place. Lots of farang food. Cheap hotels.

No beach though!

... Yes, soi slum / samphan, Cow Shed (udon Day & Night) still there

... Irish Clock still open, but different owners/leasee. Steve George gave up lease long time ago, and has passed away, so not sure if wife Mali still operates a restaurant

... you receive what you project

Unless you have a connection there, I'd give it pass, as far better places to spend a holiday.

I was thinking of 'Chern Chim' over by Nong Sim park, run by Terry Dallas, who had to go on the run, as seem to have an interest in young boys, with an arrest warrant for him, from days past, if memory serves. He was involved in 2 other businesses, which due to his trouble, were affected by his legal issues. From elsewhere on the www ...

I don't think he was the "original" owner starter of Chern Chim though , he may have bought it from the owner because I remember the guy running it was married and very strict in his business

There was another, western food vendor, actually a couple. Does 'Drunk Monkey' ring a bell. Don't think he is in business any more.

No... it was Chern Chim but I'm talking between 2006-2009

Jon was the original owner, and that was back in 2005. Don't know his last name. Opened around March 2005.

@Oliver Holzerfilled nice find

There's a Villa Markets at Udon, so not needing any small market.

Hi , No Chern Chin closed along time ago , The Irish Clock now owned by a Dutch Man , who also now owns Cheese to meet you shop , with a lot of foreign foods in it and the Resturant facing the Irish Clock ( used to be owned by Max , who sold up ) Night and Day and Nutty Park still going strong .

Made me smile

I am moving to UT with my gf in May

Bought some land at a very reasonable price and will finally settle down and build a new home

My experience of UT is that of course it is very rural- and the peace of the rural areas appeals to me after many years of the madness that is London and latterly Bangkok

Each to their own and I am sure many having a great time in Bkk will tell me I am old boring etc.

I just know when I am ready for a change - and UT has a quiet rural charm that appeals to one who has lived all his long life in London and recently Bkk

C2MU @ old Gourmet Meats location. Use to stay an NB (small rooms) occasionally, if sipping a few, as short stroll from Preecha Market & UDtown market.

Hint, things change over time.

If not in Udon for 15 years, the road infrastructure is vastly improved. Also UDtown created which is a large open air shopping area and entertainment/ food area, next to railway station.

UT is an excellent food town, and every section of town, seems to have a large area set aside for food vendors, whether enclosed or lining the street / walkways.

To add to what Rick states, at the train station area, there's actually 3 separate markets, fairly seamless, and you'd think just 1 huge market area. Separate legal owners; Preecha market, Center Point market & UD Town.

After 4pm, or even before, because of schools letting out, it can be gridlock, and parking a bit scarce, especially weekends. So good to stay within walking distance, if there on a holiday. Luckily, UT is an extremely easy walkable town, with tuk tuks & day time baht buses if feeling lazy, or brutally hot and or rainy.

Even a 4th, if including the one on top of screenshot, with Central Plaza (red square) a stone's throw away ...
