It is only going to be 42 degrees here next week, so you definitely will not need air con. That is basically sweater weather. Nobody uses air conditioning when it is that mild. Most of us just open a

I dislike this word "bro" It's a new Zealand word What happened to the word "mate"?

  • Have you asked your Thai ladyboy boyfriend about it yet? Won't you be sharing a room with him when you arrive?

If you have a good overhead fan and live on a high-floor (out of reach of mosquitos) you can leave the windows open and use the fan only. The overhead fan can dry out your eyes at night though. I even remember waking up thirsty at 5 in the morning. Evaporation cooling relies on your body losing water.

Fans are no good with the windows shut.

I have a Burmese Punkawallah. I pay him 50 baht per day but told him the note is a 500 but one of the zero's fell off. Luckily, he doesn't understand such things.

Sometimes I wear a heavy coat just for a laugh so he has to work doubly hard. My, how we chuckle.

It depends where is the room : the room where I have my computer is 41 degrees in the afternoon, full south, second floor, I tried to live only with fan, but the air of the fan is hot, so I bought an AC, and in the afternoon it's now ok

in the other pieces of the house, fan is enough , at night, too

normally, I like fan more than AC, but 41 degrees in a room direct under the sun, it's impossible to stay

I wonder how in old times ( in Thailand and other tropical countries ) they could live without electricity ( fan and AC )

The majority lived under the raised houses and ate food and socialized instead of hiding in a room starstruck by gleaming electronic screens .

The minority lived in spacious dwellings designed with airflow and used evaporation screens in doorways.

I visited the Summer Palace of Rama 6 near Hua hin, the rooms are very small , no aeration at all

it's near the sea, maybe the breeze from the sea could bring a little bit fresh air, but really , I thought the small rooms were very hot, and I think that living here was very difficult

but your explanations are good , surely people lived outside near the sea

I use AC in my Thai condo, set to 24 or 25 degrees. Air pollution’s too high to open balcony door when weather’s cooler. My Thai electricity bill for a month in which I’ve had the AC going for most of every day and night is still less than my bill in Australia for a month when I’ve not been in the country, and have used zero electricity, with everything switched off. Only use AC rarely when I’m in Australia, but I’m away for much of the Australian summer, and with clean air, I can cool the place at night by opening door and window.

A fan room is $5. AC room is $10. Not exactly free is it.

Soak a mop and put it behind a fan.

Does that work? I tried putting a bucket of water in front of the fan. That didn't work.

Do you use the air conditioning in Thailand, did you stop?

When I check into a hotel room, first thing I do is wash all the crap out of the filters because that mould and stuff is nasty.

I removed the AC from my condo and sold it. Gets hot at times but my electric bill is usually about $5 a month and I don't feel like I'm stepping into an oven when I go outside.

I would not say that. All of his topics are rhetorical setups. He is not seeking any real information. He pretends not to understand certain basic things, but the questions he asks can be answered with general common sense and he is not as cognitively incapable of figuring things out as he claims to be. He's just trying to get attention.

Even though his writing is not very strong and he sometimes has strange emotional outbursts or says things that seem out of context, he is still able to get on a plane and travel to Thailand by himself. So he is not as helpless as he tries to appear. Anyone who spends a lot of time writing serious responses to his posts does so at their own peril.

It would probably work, in front of the fan.

I had a cabin in the woods for a while with no mains power.

I read about hanging wet strips of cloth in the window.

It did work but they dry out so fast that it's hardly worth the effort.

Thats why I pointed out his fetish with mops. 😁

We prefer fresh air. During the day, the windows are open, and the fans are running. With the front door open, we have an almost 'wind tunnel' effect in our condo that keeps the rooms quite cool.

When the really hot weather arrives in March, we add another fan or two for daytime use. But at night, we will put on the AirCon in the bedroom. Usually set around 28-29 degrees.

We like the hot weather. That's why we chose to live in Thailand.

What about mosquitos?

It was in 1981 in Indonesia and 1983 in Thailand.

You are overthinking it.

But if you are trying to save money by not using A/C then Thailand really does not need this type of visitor.

We discovered this truly amazing product for the home that takes care of that problem. It appears to work with virtually every style of house or home, and our house has been mosquito-free ever since! It can work for you, too!

Find a 26m2 room first floor, problem solved, doesnt take much electricity if they have a 9500 btu aircon.

I've seen this attitude a lot on this forum.

I always read it as 'Thailand only needs ignorant people who like wasting money'

No there has been a wave of trashy tourists that have hit Thailand over the past two years as government have relaxed rules. They are cheap, don't spend any money, often engage in criminal behaviour, violence often follows them. They offer little value to Thailand, and take up the poor infrustructure that exisits in Thailand.

I am not saying you are one, but the fact you are yearning to save a few thousand baht on air conditioning and rather bake in 37 degrees heat, suggests maybe you are not the ideal visitor needed. This is just my opinion, the government welcomes cheapos who spend nothing so enjoy.

What a load of crap. Backpackers have been going to Thailand for decades.

You look about 18, if that's you in your pfp, so maybe you wouldn't know that.

I'm not yearning to save a few thousand baht btw. As someone else said in the thread,

I come to Thailand because I like the heat.

And as someone else said, I have a very good through draft in my place so by using my brain,

I've created a system which gives me a pretty comfortable temperature for next to no cost.

If you want to waste money on AC which creates pollution and heats up the surrounding atmosphere, knock yourself out.

Going back to my OP, it's not just people on this forum with that attitude. I've seen it all the Thai forums.

Some people think that by spending lots of money, that makes them more important somehow.

I believe people like that are only ever seen as marks. And they've created an illusion in Asian that all white men are rich idiots who are easily manipulated.

Personally, I prefer to build genuine connections with people and I don't need to throw money around to do that. I've been travelling around Asia for longer than you've been alive so please don't think you can educate me on how to interact with people or tell me where I'm welcome or not.

Backpackers and hostels need to banned in Thailand. They serve no purpose and little benefit to the economy of Thailand. Back in the day when Thailand had 10 million visitors a year you could make the argument they were tolerated. But in the day and age when you are getting 40 million visitors they are a scurge and need banning.

Thailand needs to adopt a policy of checking everyone has savings to come and visit.

You plan on staying in a hostel ?

If not, what's the issue? The people that stay in them are a blight.
