You're jumping to a massive number of conclusions based on a very limited amount of information, first of all we don't know if the altercation was with another foreigner, so there's no need to blame Thais unnecessarily, secondarily we don't know the nature of the altercation, a simple slap in the face can result in somebody falling down and hitting their head on the concrete which can easily result in death, so there are simply more questions than answers at this point.

Also I really have no idea what you're talking about when you discuss uncontrolled violence here, yes there's a fair amount of violence but it's almost always Thai on Thai, it's very rare that foreigners get assaulted by Thais, and if you want to see what real violence looks like spend some time in Lagos or Manila. Or South Los Angeles.

A Swede was arrested so most of us know.

It’s always difficult to discuss incidents like this when the facts are so sparse. At present, all that’s confirmed is that the victim is a 58‑year‑old Australian tourist. Reports also indicate the a

What I got yesterday through the media was the older victim was an Aussie/Brit with dual nationality, allegedly originally from Liverpool.

He was with his Thai girlfriend, and the perpetrator had a Swedish passport but appeared to be of Middle Eastern origin.

It was supposedly a road rage incident.

The perpetrator used some form of martial arts blow to the victim.

Whatever, a pointless loss of life over a silly issue.

Just another reason for @Gottfrid to stop blaming Thailand for extreme levels of violence, one many of us consider it to be infinitely safer than where we came from.

Thais in general are good. Farangs are a mixed bag.

Sad for the guy who lost his life over a meaningless road rage incident, the guy who hit him obviously has anger management issues, he will have a lot of time to reflect on his actions in a Thai prison..

Indeed, I come from Dalston (U.K.) where you’re considered overdressed if having more than one ear… 😱

A toxic combination- a mouthy scouser and a likely member of one of those immigrant crime gangs sowing chaos in Sweden.. 🥊

You have to Admit spidermike Thai Security guards are only too happy to go mob handed beating tourists specially in Patong. There are many videos of attacks on tourists in holiday hot spots like Phuket and Pattaya.

Neither of which you have any proof of.

There are a few videos not many. Many would be 20 a year.

The tourist status may be an assumption? Especially since it happened in the epicentre of tourist activity on the island.

I'm more concerned that the police were only alerted after his death, some 6 hours after the alleged assault.

Then I remember where I am and it all makes perfect sense again.

My initial reaction too- precious hours lost when evidence will no doubt dissipate as every hour passes

I will have to agree with that. However, if a person causes a little bit of problem or disturbance, should that warrant a ticket to get beaten to death?

It looks as if it might have been the fall that caused his death rather than the actual assault.

Just as an example: running off at the mouth. A "common because" in Pattaya.

That seems to be what you are doing...with nothing to back up what you say...a guy has died show some humanity.

So the assault took place at 1700 and nobody noticed anything ?

Wait for the CCTV evidence to be released, nobody knows anything yet

This is how The Globe reported it:

Shocking CCTV footage has surfaced showing a tourist killed by a single karate chop in Patong, Phuket. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, with Alan Roger Jolliffe, an Australian national originally from Liverpool, being struck once in the face during a heated verbal dispute on Prachanukhrok Road.

The footage reportedly shows the attacker delivering a single hand strike that caused Mr Jolliffe, 58, to collapse onto the street, his head hitting the ground and leaving him unconscious. His Thai girlfriend, who witnessed the incident, is seen calling for emergency assistance. Mr Jolliffe was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead later that evening at approximately 10:23 pm.

Phuket police have arrested 29-year-old Swedish national Pektas Tugui Tayar in connection with the incident. He was detained at a hotel in Kathu on 26 February and has reportedly admitted to striking the victim. The suspect remains in custody at Patong Police Station, where he is facing charges of assault causing death as investigations continue.

Should think quite a few so called visitors come to Phuket and Pattaya as they know they will more than likley get away with such behaviour.

They had movies in the 1980s. They had more violence too. Rocky, Rambo, Arnold films, Karate etc

Films now are mild and often fantasy stuff.

Pensioner age for males is 67yo. He picked a fight with the wrong guy. If you are 58yo and a 29yo dude is aggressive say nothing. Walk away. A 58yo can't beat a 29yo unless the young guy is very soft. I know a guy who was 76yo and he got bashed by a 35yo in road rage. The silly old fool mouthed off. It is not worth it.

Yep, there comes a time in every man's life when he must realize that he can't take the punches and blows like he could when he was younger, so a whole new approach is required, that is deescalating tense situations, and backing down gracefully.

Am I mistaken or is Phuket becoming a more and more dangerouis place to visit now. I went there many times in the 1990's and esrly 2000's and saw next to no trouble. T he main problems then was arguing with the rip off songhlaew drivers over their price.I never witnessed brawls or any such problems in bars or on the streets. It was a very laidback and safe place then.

I wonder what a 58 year-old - of any nationality - could have done to require a beating severe enough to require their hospitalisation, let a one resulting in their death.
Of the many posts we've seen on here and other forms of media, it seems many or most are a generation younger.

While we often read about intra-/inter-marital assaults and spousal murders in this age group and higher, it seems to me at least uncommon for a tourist in this age group to be involved in such a violent altercation.

It will be interesting to read what details are made public.

People rarely see murders in any year. One media report does not make it dangerous.
