Airfare Hike Strands American in Bangkok Airport for 10 Days

Featured Replies

Lol - years ago, I 'lived' at Heathrow Airport for 4 days while trying to return to Bangkok after attending my dad's funeral. Money was tight for me in those days and so I took (what I thought) was enough cash to pay for the return ticket (since I did not know how long I would have to stay in the UK).

Alas!, plane tickets were more expensive from London to Bangkok than Bangkok to London! The only ticket that I could afford was Egypt Air via Cairo, leaving 5 days later. So I spent some time at the airport terminal, with a few quid to buy water and a little food.

On the second day, the patrolling police asked me what I was doing, and kindly allowed me to stay in the warm terminal building since there was snow outside and it was bitterly cold.

Airport seating is not designed for a comfortable night's rest :)

Just one of life's experiences.... (I didn't vlog about it!)

  • This guy should be thrown into prison. There should be zero tolerance for americans who cannot afford to travel. There bore us with capitalism is great, and only apply it when it suits them.

  • Well I am more inclined to say the USA Embassy should help him out, because the US have caused much of this mess! Put a few red thumbs down on THAT!

How did the USA cause his mess? The man's financial condition is his own doing. Airfares for regional travel are still less chump change. He can get a one way flight to Phnom Penh for 1700 baht, Siem Reap for 2100 baht, Kuala Lumpur for 2400 baht. If he could not afford that, then he should not have been traveling in the first place. This is just another deadbeat scammer looking to play people.

How lucky for you that you don't come from a country burdened by capitalism. Let me guess - you're a communist? A fascist? Hitler was your buddy and Putin's your daddy? It's such a shame that those nasty American people "bore" you with their praise of their "capitalist" system. I know how you feel. As an American, all of my working class neighbors who are suffering economically with unaffordable housing and lack of health care are truly boring as they express their love of capitalism under the current administration. Please tell us how we can all be more like you. Oh PLEASE do! Now could you translate your comment, explain how it pertains in any way to the story, especially with your small minded attitude toward other cultures - you see, most of us do not speak your native language, gibberish in the dialect of ignorance. Google can't translate gibberish.

Now here's a piece of enlightenment in case you might shoehorn it into your tiny mind - I don't think anyone in the world besides the wealthy and powerful who benefit from it think capitalism is great. I haven't heard anything like that since the Bush administration - could you tell us where you heard it (And the voices in your head don't count)? And here's a BIG one - ready? Take a deep breath: Opportunistic whiny wanna be tiktok stars come in all nationalities. Yup, it's true. You'd know that if you made even the most meager attempt at educating yourself. Do try, won't you? Good luck with your higher education. Now in the mean time we hope you don't have a bad experience with a Thai person, then we'll have to read your subsequent list of everything wrong with Thai people, and we've already heard too much from you.

Blah, blah, bl zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......😴

Please translate that to English for me, how does someone "bore us with capitalism is great, and only apply it when it suits them"?

If you think Americans have the corner on the market as far as this type of thing goes, your world is way too small.

The way i read it is that he arrived with little ( or no money) , no onward ticket and looking at the drivel his profile puts online, he was on a mission to make content ( beg) to pay for a ticket - or disappear on the begpacking trail in Thailand as yet another digital nobody. - i am not from the US but he caused this problem himself by travelling without sufficient funds or a planned ticket

Totally agree. Scum creator. Looks like he needs a shower, de-licing and a haircut. Absolute Pikey. Don't know if he had to muster up the money for food and drink in the airport but have you seen the prices there? Cheese toastie and a bottle of water = aeroplane ticket back to the US.

So travel beyond one means and boring other people is a criminal offense in your mind? And only americans (sic) eh? Care to expand on how you came up with this? Please state age, nationality, education level when responding.

That was my first thought - how did he afford to eat in the airport for 10 days? It takes a long layover before I am willing to fork over much more than money for a drink and snacks at any airport. Sounds like someone without a plan or basic finances who heard that Thailand was a cheap place to hang out and was planning on making enough through " influencing" to fund his trip.

I see all the halfwit Septics on here are all getting a bit precious. People point out that it's down to their inbred, retarded leader why most things are going wrong at the moment and they all start circling the wagons. Not in the least bit surprised. Might have to give Forrest Gump another viewing later....

Waiting 10 days in an airport is like torture.

Trust me, it beats being locked up at IDC in Bangkok, worst scenario, by tenfold.

Here is why, if he was short on money at the airport:

"Despite the unusual circumstances, the airline reportedly fulfilled its obligations by ensuring the man’s basic needs were met throughout his prolonged stay at the airport."

You're welcome 🤗

Thanks. I read that, but was not sure if it applied to food. That had to get expensive.

You need glasses 👓 my friend it has nothing to do with the war. 🙈 He’s just a bum with no money who was denied entry. 🤷🏼

The war yes but You can’t blame his president for his own lack of funds.

My guess to what happened is that the airline couldn't send him back to Singapore as he would not meet some immigration requirement. Since the airline was still responsible for him while he was at the airport, they had to ensure he was fed. This may all have been his plan all along.

The thing is that Thai Immigration, after denying you entry, put heavy pressure on you to pay your own way out, i.e. buy your own ticket. This guy probably called their bluff and refused knowing that the rules state the responsibility falls on the inbound carrier. Immigration don't like that as they don't want their vague and subjective denial of entry policy to negatively impact their relationship with airlines and the AoT.

I have seen many of those types around here. They usually go into a "journey of discovery". (it could mean anything like drugs, drugs and more drugs.) Most of the time they come from some very wealthy family and like to pretend that they are poor. Once I had the displeasure to meet this Kosher hippy girl living in a little cabin and pretending that she did not have money and could not afford a shower but in reality her father was a billionaire that invented some special chemical.

Deport this bag of "meat" to Russia.

I am sure he will have more Podcast adventures.

There's an Embassy..... probably just a few less rotten eggs on the walls than the USA one!

Loser LOL

Thats your opinion, consistent with general Brits here, still haven't gotten over all your " Great " minds left 1770's and left England what it is today without the " Great " .

Less Rotten eggs the math is correct you just happen to have less population, but it is increasing from all the bitching, country is being overrun by outsiders, which is what is happening to U.S. so less rotten eggs " the saying those who also live in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks "

Thats an Embassy, it is more a closet in an office building, your country cares more about taking care of non-citizens, instead of giving your expats a cost of living, 😂

Give a thumbs down Brits!

He didn't enter the country (was denied immigration clearance) & it's the airline's job to check he has an onward ticket before letting him check-in.

I've flown from Changi 100's of times, I'd say approx. 15-20 times on a 1-way ticket and have always been challenged at the airline check-in desk if I didn't have a return ticket. Every time bar 1 I had a flight back, the 1 time I did'nt I showed a letter from IRAS confirming I'd paid my Exit Tax & was leaving Singapore + a job offer that showed I was coming back at some yet to be confirmed date in the near future & after a chat with a supervisor they let me check-in.

Also got stopped at DMK when we had 1-way tickets to Penang, we hadn't decided if we were going to spend 4 weeks in Penang or go elsewhere in Malaysia and maybe even come back via boat from Langkawi, fortunately we decided we were going to come back from Penang so I'd booked 1-way flights back a couple of days before, otherwise I don't think they would have let us check-in.

Make your mind up!

Make your mind up!

I'm assuming you're refering to the Penang flights (I realised later that I'd worded this part badly).

1 week before we booked the trip, we were in the Maldives (for my birthday) discussing how I can spend <180 days in Thailand this year & decided to do 4 weeks in Malaysia but we'd keep it flexible & maybe come back via Langkawi (Boat to Satun) so we could fit in a trip to see her family there.

At the end of the Maldives trip we decided that as we'd already spent Xmas/New Year in Koh Lipe/Satun/Hat Yai (and as it does nothing for me spending <180 days in Thailand) we'd just stay in Penang so I booked the 1-way tickets to come back from there.

So we flew back into DMK, spent 1 night in an airport hotel then flew out to Penang - I wanted to cancel the return flights from Male and fly directly to KL, don't get me started on her/Thai logic when it comes to "Wasting Money" (I.e. You spend more money so so you're not!).
