RID says Bangkok may experience flooding due to sink in land

The deputy director-general of the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) says it is possible that Bangkok and the vicinities may be submerged permanently due to land sinking.

RID Deputy Director-General Peerapong Suwanmontri (พีรพงษ์ สุวรรณมนตรี) says the prime minister has set up a committee to look into water management in Bangkok and the vicinities in line with His Majesty the King’s initiatives. He therefore affirms the provinces will not be submerged like the previous year as major reservoirs across the country have sufficient capacities to restore rainfall.

Regarding the construction of dykes along the banks of Chao Phraya (เจ้าพระยา) River, the deputy director-general says the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is responsible for the project. The 2.50-meter dykes are expected to help prevent Bangkok from inundation.

As for the extension of the dykes to the Gulf of Thailand, Mr Peerapong says he agrees with the idea as Bangkok and the vicinities are sinking.
