I heard a rumour the bar's in Bangkok are closing this week end, 14, 15 and 16 December, some Pre Election thing. Fuelled by a sign at Foodland saying "No alcohol being sold" on the dates mentioned. Had planned a few day's up there but......

Any information would be much appreciated.

I have heard the same, that those dates will be non alcohol days. As is the normal case, there will always be somewhere to ge a beer if you really need one.

Apparently they want us to have a clear head when we listen to the pick-up trucks driving through with the loudspeakers blaring for their candidates. They also want us clear headed so we don't have an accident trying to pull out on to the major roads when the view of traffic is blocked by their campaign posters!

The more I hear, the more I want to move to Myanmar!

this will do tourism a power of good 14/15/ ,and then the 23rd ,christmas eve and new years eve stuck in the hotels for the gala's ,us bar owners will be starving thius month me thinks

I originally heard it was omly the 14th and 15th. I bloody well hope so, considering Sunday evening is going to be a great night for football, and one that I plan to spend in the pub.

For those people who registered to vote early (owing to hardship traveling or due to other conflicts) they can cast votes on 15 & 16 Dec. Close to 2 million people registered, about 5 times more than in the 2005 election, and most in Bangkok.

If past performance is any prediction then alcohol sales would be banned on 23 December, in most large-ish retail outlets. Bars open based on their arrangements with the local constabulary.

Edited to add: found this information on another website from a well-informed and reliable source:

"...there won’t be drinks served from the 14th at 6pm until 16th at midnight. Then again from the 22nd at 6pm until the 23rd at midnight."

Will chatuchak and other shopping centers be closed as well?

Yes; I can see some logic (if I look hard enough :D ) in not serving alcohol to voters and potential voters...............however, us blue eyes (and grey and green and the odd red ones) CANNOT vote.

If they can discriminate against us (double pricing at parks and some golf courses) based on skin/eye color can't they, logically , deduce that we won't be voting and sell us a pint or two?????????????

Most restaurants will still serve you if you have a bottle of spirits - at least those that normally let you take your own spirits and serve you soda, pepsi etc.

At least they do here. So, stock up on several bottles.

Talking of which, I had better get to the shop and get a few bottles of vodka in!!

I've heard that bars and restaurants in the Silom area are usually exempt from the alcohol prohibition on pre-election nights, anyone else heard the same?

You are right, but sadly it's far to logical, and it will give the BIB an opportunity to fllush more money out of bars which want to open and serve.

Something else to add, I just spoke with a Thai attorney who specialises in tourism and entertainment law and he says during the coming weekend's nawk khet (ex-precinct) elections there is no prohibition on the sale of alcohol. So if it's all rumour one wonders about reported signs in bars?

I own a share in a bar. I think almost all Bars will be shut as there is a 10,000 baht fine and 6 months in prison for all owners if the serve alcohol. Interestingly enough there is also a fine and jail time for customers who buy alcohol (10,000 baht and 6 months also). Should be back open around 6 to 9pm Sunday night.

The bars are closed on 15 and 16 so that thais working in the beer biz and live out of bkk can go and vote or will not be shit faced the nite before and can vote in bkk on the 16th.sounds weird but its true, the local govt thinks that closing bars and stopping the sale of alcohol will help in getting the people to the vote booths,GOOD LUCK on both counts.the bars are also closed from midnite 21st till 24 th, for basically the same reason.what a way to spend the xmas hols,

CORRECTION to my last input, the bars on soi cowboy WILL BE OPEN 15 and 16, normal hours,HOORAY, dont know about other locations,come on down and ask for the election day special. BARS OPEN ARE << fanny bar,,,toy bar,,, jungle jim and moonshine,>>bring your own tissue, it should be an emotional day.

My favourite Mexican on Silom Road usually sells beer etc on most days of the year but have told me that they will be closed/no beer on election day (23rd) itself. On other days I expect it will be business as usual.

Does anyone know if BYO (bring your own) would be legal?

I have invited a few friends for lunch in a restaurant on Sunday Dec. 16 and I don't want my guest to drink Mirinda

No alcohol from 6PM today until midnight Sunday and 6PM on the 22nd until midnight the next day anywhere in Thailand according to Bangkok Post report - and they also say the penalty is 10k fine or up to six years in jail.
