Da, but can't they know the position of the belt and therefor the ratio? it's not like it has no idea about the ratio. It has to control it after all.

Are they & it

the metal cetrifugal rollers?

Or what?

CVT = continuously variable transmission

Key word continuously

Low they know - high they know - middle, what middle ?

I know they are continuosly. Surely it can't be so hard to measure the position more granular than the two extremes on the side?

I don't know how it would work, I just can imagine that measuring the position can't be rocket science ????

It was just a thought how they might get the rear wheel speed without having the ABS to piggyback on.

ABS uses the tone wheel - problem solved.

Don't care what gear the transmission is in, what color shorts you got on, who your GIK is ...

Phases of the moon, alignment of the planets, height of the tide ...

The problem is that there doesn't seem to be a tonewheel as the rear wheel has no ABS, yet it has traction control. So we were thinking of alternative ways.

Could be something as simple as: The Engine RPM spikes (and the rider didn't just rip open the throttle) -> Rear wheel is probably slipping, reduce the power.

As expected, an update for the NMAX: https://www.yamaha-motor.co.th/commuter/nmax-2021/feature

Looks like there are only two new features: Traction control and "Connected".

Traction control comes as standard, to get the "Connected" features you have to pay 4500THB more and then you can connect your phone to the bike and do this:

The Honda PCX 160 with ABS costs 91.9k, and the new NMAX with "Connected" costs exactly the same.

Yamaha throws in a 5 year 50k warranty though, no idea what you get from Honda for their PCX, but probably quite a bit less.

At first the NMAX does of course look like more value for the money, but if you plan to sell it after a few years (what probably most people here do) and take resale value into consideration the PCX is cheaper.

Papa Al has mentioned owning a KLR650 that he keeps in Colorado for his stateside visits.

I think he will find this one hard to resist.
