Shenanigans Pattaya Mexican Food

Featured Replies

saw a promo today for the Pattaya branch advertising Mexican food. Anyone tried it?

Irish Mexican Food? This should be interesting.

:whistling: Must be expensive!!!!

i had an Irish mixed grill there

boiled potatoes, mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, croquette potatoes, jacket potatoes, new potatoes, potato skins and chips......

Been 2-3 times...bland and overpriced..Mikes and Blue Parrot are better (and they are not that good either) so that's telling you something.

Irish Mexican Food? This should be interesting.

Regardless if it is an Irish or a Mexican themed bar, it's Thai people who cook the food... :whistling:

That isn't strictly true. Mexican workers most everywhere yes, but many cooks/chefs are of all national backgrounds there. It does help for a cook/chef to know what a national cuisine is supposed to taste like though. I do think it is very hard for a Thai who has not extensively traveled in the US or Mexico to really understand what the Mexican food is supposed to taste like. An individual would have to be very talented indeed to get that right without knowing what right is.

BTW, I haven't bother to risk eating Mexican at Shenanigans. I simply figured the chances the food would be good authentic Mexican or Tex-mex, or Cali-mex, were rather remote, and they were mostly targeting people and nationalities who wouldn't know any better. Not surprised in the least about the report.

I learned a long time ago that most people from the UK, Ireland, and Europe don't really understand what really good Mexican food is supposed to taste like. Which probably explains why Pattaya doesn't have what you would call a decent Mexican restaurant.

I think it is a bit of a joke to do that in an Irish Bar, it shows that they must be struggling. but the chefs from Coyotes in Bangkok are the ones who taught them how to make the mexican food. Coyotes is not that bad as far as Mexican food go in Thailand so there Mexican food may well be ok. I wouldnt try it though because I really never go into that bar anyway. I prefer Shananigans in Jomtian.

Doesn't mean they cook good food....

One of my favorite restaurants in the US was Carlos Murphy's. If nothing else, for the funny story about the origins, printed on their menus. Fair food, large chain, decent menu. but funny name.

Difference between support roles and head chefs. I can imagine Mexicans learning Italian well, Korean or Thai, not so easily. I also think a good Mexican chef could TRAIN Thais to do Mexican well, but would probably need to stick around for continued tasting and quality control. The key there is that the Thais would have to learn to cook something they may not like so much, if the food was tailored at all to Thai palates, it wouldn't be good Mexican food.

But we do have Chow Soy "English" style Chinese food and Neroy's "English" style Indian curry house

I suppose if I were employed as a cook in a Thai restaurant, the food would be pretty bad too as not growing-up eating this food, I have no idea how its supposed to taste.

For people who have eaten authentic Thai food for a long time, you DO know how it is supposed to taste. Not much relation to race or nationality about that. A native may still have an advantage but depends on the individual.

In the US I worked in a Thai restaurant, there were some Thai chefs but the best one (according to the Thai's) was the mexican chef who had been working in Thai restaurants in NYC for over 10 years, he had more experience cooking than any of the Thai chefs and he was the best !:D

Not really surprising. Talent is talent, but I doubt he would have gotten to that level without input from Thais and/or people that know what the food is supposed to taste like. He became someone who knows what it should be from talent and experience.

That was really funny, you had me laughing out load! Good one!

Yep very hard to make an authentic tasting meal just from a recipe especially if you have no idea what it should taste like and probably wouldn't like it anyway..

Alnost as hopeless as the girls they have in the booze Dept at Villa, Foodland etc...

Assistant, ''what you want Sir ?'' ''This is very good sir''

Me, ''Have you tried it?''

Assistant, ''I no dink alcohon''

Me ''<deleted>!''

Be like asking a Thai to recco a decent blue cheese....
