Day-to-day life in Myanmar
I just got back to my hotel in Mandalay, after 3 days visiting/donating at orhanages and a 6-hour car journey back over the bumpy mountain road. As usual, there were many checkpoints, including a major checkpoint where all vehicles are x-rayed for hidden weapons or drugs. The x-ray machine is a customised mobile unit, with an extendible gantry that goes right over the road and zaps the vehicle moving slowly underneath. (God knows how many bechtels of radiation the car driver gets...). Interestingly, that mobile x-ray vehicle was a modern-looking Ford... Here we came unstuck. Seeing a foreigner in the car, the police officers sent me and my Burmese translator over to speak to the chief police officer. That man had us stand in front of him while he harangued my translator non-stop for at least 20 minutes! My translator kept saying 'sorry' in Burmese and 'ok' to everything that the officer was saying. We were finally saved by 2 rotund Burmese women, who waddled over to pay their bribe money to this officer. These 2 were dripping in gold jewelry and they winked at me https://teakdoor.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif After they waited for some minutes while the officer shouted at my translator, one of the women physically dug her fingers into the man's ribs and said effectively "Oh, give it a bleedin rest!" in Burmese, at which point the officer let us proceed. My translator later told me that the officer was annoyed at him for bringing a foreigner into this dangerous place. 'What would happen if he gets injured?'. (Well, the chances of ME getting injured are next to nothing, whilst the chances of that officer being on the receiving end of an RPG are somewhat higher!!). I asked my translator later what will happen when the pdf fighters take over this region, (as they no doubt will at some stage). He said that the soldiers will either die in the fighting, or they will run away or surrender, since most of them are conscripts. As for the local police who are aiding the soldiers, they will just change sides... -

Fatal Motorcycle Crash at Notorious Bend Sparks Local Superstition
You just have no idea, do you..... "a similar bend" you obviously have no understanding of traffic engineering. Of course it's easier for those with no idea to try and imply they are somehow "superior" by blaming others. -

Is Earth round or flat❓
Discussion of gravity is relevant because gravity is what caused all the planets to be "round". The foolish flat earthers need to also deny the "theory" of gravity to quash that "round" rumor. -

Where to go for initial non-inmigrant B visa
Maybe I have incorrect information. I had impression Singapore was not preferred option. Personally big fan of Saigon so that would be my preferred option. Laos last on list as thinking introduction of eVisa not as simple as Vietnam. -

Phuket duo swipes 600 euros from Belgian with a fake hug
Photo via Facebook/ Phuket Times ภูเก็ตไทม์ By Petch Petpailin Police yesterday, December 25, arrested a Thai woman and a transwoman for pretending to greet a Belgian man with a hug and stealing 600 euros in cash (approximately 21,000 baht) from him in the Patong area of Phuket. The 58 year old Belgian victim filed a complaint with Patong Police Station officers at around 5am on December 22, reporting that he had lost his cash to Thai thieves while walking along Rat-Uthit 200 Pi Road in the Patong sub-district of Kathu district. The Belgian man stated that the Thai woman and transwoman approached him and unexpectedly hugged him on the street, after which he discovered his cash was missing. Officers reviewed security camera footage along the road and successfully tracked down both suspects at their residences. The 33 year old transwoman, whose name has not been disclosed, was found in possession of 0.9 grammes of crystal methamphetamine. Another suspect, a 38 year old Thai woman, whose identity has also not been revealed, was arrested with methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as Yaba, in her possession. The pair now face two charges: Section 336 of the Criminal Code: Committing theft, which carries a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to 10,000 baht. Section 162 of the Narcotics Control Act: Use of a Category 1 drug (methamphetamine), punishable by up to one year in prison, a fine of up to 20,000 baht, or both. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-26
