N47HAN Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Why do most posters look for something no more than a few clicks away from where they now live. Shops / mechanics/hairdressers. Etc.etc You obviously dont mind exploring / looking afar for a new home , so why only down the road is acceptable ( to some of you now ) ? For chalong always seems to be " before the circle " From my neck of the woods " up north ". Just curious

JetsetBkk Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 What we do once in a blue moon - travelling 1,000s of miles to come here - bears little relation to what we want to do every day. Next troll topic? 1
Popular Post LivinginKata Posted March 24, 2013 Popular Post Posted March 24, 2013 Seems obvious to me that folks prefer services as close as possible to where the live. To be fair LIK, yes, a bit of a non-topic, but, personally, the OP has a point. When I chose my apartment to live, one big factor before I signed up was can I walk to many of the everyday things I need. (yes - no transport here - it's been said before) So, yes, everything I need is a short distance away, by choice. A lot of it does go back to the lack of that essential service on the island, transport. I would suggest that many tourists are doing the same now. Edited March 24, 2013 by NamKangMan 1
Felt 35 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Why should I go to Rawai, Karon or Paklok to use services which on Phuket originated just where I stay?
Jimi007 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 (edited) One word: Convenience. Years ago we had no choice to drive all over to get goods and services. Now the traffic sucks! Auto correct works great sometimes. Edited March 24, 2013 by Jimi007

Are they really that useless? It seems that way. It must be about time for where to buy the best burger or pizza thread for the umpteenth time It seems to me that there are new places for pizzas or burgers and some old places that aren't around now or aren't of the same quality they once were. I suppose they could be covered under the pinned restaurant thread or the old threads could be resurrected again... But I really don't see any problem with threads asking about a specific service in a specific area. It's up to you whether you chose to read or reply to that thread...

General topics and farang pub seem quite loose. But ladies in Thailand is quite strict. I think we all know the boundaries for the Phuket forum but we all push them for whatever reason. I am not really puzzled by where to get haircut threads as sometimes it is hard to find certain quality shops. What confuses me is when people try and save a few satangs but will spend all day burning petrol on their honda dreams to find these astonishing bargains. To me my time is valuable more than money 1

I can think of a few ways, the main and most obvious one being get up off your fat A and go and try some outlets that purvey your required goods and when you find one you like then you know. Not exactly rocket science is it??? Or try another age old well trusted method, when you are out and about ASK someone, you will be surprised how much information you can gather this way. And not a computer or iphone in sight or even required

To me my time is valuable more than money I think I agree with you for once. I like my barber, he does the best haircut for me and knows what I want. I will drive my truck once in a while up to central area to get things I can't get here. But I know all the local shops and what they carry, then I know what days my outdoor markets are and where and which has the freshest products. I've lived here long enough to know where to get most things, but sometimes the local tire shop shuts down and we might to need to know where the next one to our area that is decent on other's experiences have been with that local business. I will it seems be required by you to repeat it. If you are looking for something specific anywhere in the world get up off your computer stool/seat and get out and explore and ask people on your travels, and I will personally garantee you find what you are looking for pdq. I would venture to mention your demeaning tone did not immediately encourage me to respond to your post, but on consideration I did not see why I should let your rudeness hamper my response. I would also remind you that the topic is about moving in Thailand not about where to buy stuff. I would still assist anyone who asked me on the street however, no matter where I was in Thailand or Phuket. Even if all they wanted was a burger.

NamKangMan Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 (edited) @ phuketjock From memory, I have only ever requested information on this forum a few times. I usually do my own exploring, research and enquiring. I think many people would prefer a few recommendations from this forum, rather that drive/ride around all day searching for what they need. I live here, but many of these threads are started by people who do not live on Phuket. So, your "get off your fat A and go and try" and your"when you are out and about ASK someone" advice is not really relevant to them. Some will just be coming here for a holiday and want some recommendations. This forum is not "tripadvisor" but it's real time information from expats living here. It doesn't get any better than that for the dissemination of information. If it's too much effort for you, you don't have to read or post Edited March 25, 2013 by NamKangMan 2
