This Day In History

It might have been done before but who wants to dredge up the archives? smile.png

On this day in 1913, Democratic President Woodrow Wilson segregated the Civil Service.

“Prior to the segregation of the civil service in 1913, appointments
had been made solely on merit as indicated by the candidate’s
performance on the civil-service examination. Thereafter, racial
discrimination became the norm. Photographs came to be required at the
time of application, and African-Americans knew they would not be hired.
The existing work force was segregated. Many African-Americans were
dismissed.”

April 12 is also remembered as being the first day of the US Civil War and the day the first man (Yuri Gagarin) went into space.......

I think I'll take the views of a real black man into account here.

The RNC Convention coverage has been an elaborate testament to that racism. That bigotry has been under the surface and above it. It’s there when minority speakers get ignored or moved out of sight so as not to offend liberal viewers on MSNBC. It’s there when the racist vandalism of Mia Love’s page is vandalized and that vandalism is ignored. It’s there when Allen West is depicted beating white women.

I don't think your clip from the article gives a correct view of the entire article.

I advise readers to click on the link and read it all. Meanwhile here is another clip :

He pointed out that the unemployment among blacks is significantly higher than the rest of the country, particularly for teenagers, and that the median income for black families has dropped 11 percent since President Barack Obama took office.

Do you know what happened 163 years
ago?

Back in 1850

California became a state

The people had no electricity.

The state had no money.

Almost everyone spoke Spanish.

There were gunfights in the streets.

So basically nothing has changed except then the—

Women had real boobs and the men didn't hold hands.

That, my friends, is the history lesson for today!

Five hundred years ago today, a small book rolled off the press in a

small workshop in Venice. Nothing earth-shattering; just a

commentary on the Psalms, in Latin, by Cardinal Juan Torquemada (uncle

of the infamous Torquemada of the Inquisition). It wandered north

across the Alps into France, and finished up on my bookshelf in NE

Thailand. When it was printed, Leo X Medici was Pope, Henry VIII,

young and handsome, was King of England (and tupping the maids of

honour in the palace gardens), and all the Western world was Catholic.

When I hold it, I have five hundred years of history in my hands.

Happy birthday!
