Achtung! Chula students celebrate graduation with Hitler

BANGKOK: -- Hot on the heels of Bangkok's Hitler Fried Chicken comes Hitler Chulalongkorn University.

Students at the Thai school have erected a massive graduation mural in their middle of their campus that inexplicably features an image of the German dictator heiling.

The banner was first hung up two days ago, according to our tipster who would only identify himself as, "a concerned and incredulous American student studying the language and culture of Thailand."

Coconuts readers might ask - why would students at Thailand's most prestigious academic institution might create such a mural? Good question.

The answer is probably embedded on the mural itself. Accompanying the Führer are superheroes like the Hulk, Superman, Captain America, Batman and Ironman.

This is supposedly one of the top universities in Thailand. And next to Captain America too!

Have met quite a few Chula students, nice kids, diligent students, but thick as planks about world affairs and history.....

it may be that Thai students actually equate the US with Nazi Germany - hence hitler next to Captain America.......

This is going to be hard for the "Swastikas are Buddhist meme" apologists as there is NO swastika in this one.

Also, this Hitler doesn't look at all like Charlie Chaplin, so forget that excuse too.

I think this is actually a seriously offensive thing, coming from a so called elite educational institution in Thailand.

Would it be so hard to teach about Hitler and Nazism?

Would it be so hard to teach that Neo-Nazis today in Russia are targeting Asian people racially for violence and killings?

To those who say we're meddling westerners, I say, Thailand wake up to reality, it could use some meddling with its continuing shameful flirting with Hitler. Nazis and Hitler aren't heroes. Neo Nazi movements still exist today and they are something to be fought against, not propped up as something cool or a fashion statement.

Chulalongkorn is considered the Oxford-Cambridge-Harvard-Yale of Thai education. Thammasat is a little way off as #2.

In reality, the Oxbridge unis in England are not the top ones for many subjects (e.g. Economists at LSE are the elite, science at Imperial College).

Likewise universities like Khon Kaen University have been hailed as offering better courses in various subjects.

No they're not. Whoever did that and whoever didn't realize it was objectionable was IGNORANT. They have shamed their school in the eyes of the world, and also shamed Thailand as that is an elite school of the country ... except for Nazi lovers.

Really, condemning the celebration of genocide is a western value? News to me. Hitler and Mao are both examples of people whose genocidal lunacy should never be forgotten. Hitler industrialised genocide and celebration of his evil must be opposed every time it happens.

That Hitler is AN historical figure is not it and neither is bringing Western values anywhere. The short of it is the people that made the banner probably don't really know who he is, what he stood for or perhaps think he is as unreal as Captain America; he just looks cool (in their eyes). Betting the reason PolPot ain't up there is because some of them know he was real... oh, and he doesn't look as good. Though I agree, it's not worth getting worked up about it when one can picture it coming from the equivalent mind of a five year old.

Why not? Is anyone really offended?

Perhaps the students are bit smarter than you give them credit for and included it so they could get some free publicity and marvel at everyone getting upset about it.

Someone interview the "artist" post haste ...

I just spoke with the office of the Vice President for Administration for the university and mentioned this mural and said they may possibly have a PR issue. The person I spoke with said they never heard of Hitler & hung up on me. I rang back and spoke with the President's office who said they will pass on the info to the University communications manager who will review and decide what action to take.
