What a great man he was, God Bless him.

Yes indeed. Imagine what would have happened in SA without him. Truly one man can change history for good or evil.

“If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.”

“I am not the only one who did not want revenge. Almost all my colleagues in prison did not want revenge, because there is no time to do anything else except to try and save your people.” - Nelson Mandela.

This, for me, was the greatest thing about him, after 26 years imprisonment, the best years of his life taken from him, and not a trace of bitterness. What an example to the rest of humanity, what a legacy.

“As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison.”

-Nelson Mandela

One of the very greatest men of the last 100 years!

If just 1% of the people would be like him, we would have a MUCH better world...

Farewell, Mandiba, thanks for all you did! Rest in Peace

Special regards for the South Africans here. I forgot we had any!

Your experience is not an isolated one.

Maybe 12 months or ago, I was chatting with the Lassie and I mentioned Nelson Mandela in passing ... I also got the blank look.

Then I took the time to explain, found him on Wiki, found the Thai version and now (hopefully) she is the wiser.

This is the link to Thai ... HERE

But there is still massive race issues / segregation and tension between the white SA's, blacks & coloureds so one may ask, what did he actually achieve....

Was it worth 27 years in prison, many would think not.

To answer your question he achieved what he set out to do and that was to remove the aprtheid regime and replace it with Majority rule ! Yes there are still problems in South africa but like anycountry that has had an opressive regime things wont change overnight but I am sure things have progressed since he achieved his goal and will continue to do so and I also think Madiba himself would have said that yes it was worth spending those 27 yrs in prison to ultimately succeed .

The world is going to be a poorer place for his passing and he deserves our respect and thoughts at this time R.I P Nelson Mandela Sleep well and may you be at peace as you look down on your countrymen at this sad time !

Great man indeed. Even those who wanted to disrespect him here know he was great.

he will certainly be missed. Idolized him, I did.

The Full Nelson !

I trust the local statesmen can be inspired to forgive and reconcile.

I wonder how many 21st century figures will equal his stature appreciation.

Dwarves see difference the magnanimous reach out and compromise.

Farewell Madiba we'll seldom see your like again.

South Africa still has poverty but an individuals opportunity is not blighted by skin at birth.

A Royal born in a hut,a prisoner,a lawyer,Nobel prize sharer with deKlerk his old adversary enabled by USA and Pik Botha.Rather than revenge his way was modest.

He stood down undefeated after one term setting an examle for peaceful transitions

My heart goes out to all the people of South Africa who have today lost someone truly special. A sad day indeed for us all.

R.I.P.

A great man, he showed that retribution was not the answer.

More important he was the figurehead for many who were tortured and incarcerated for speaking out against the injustice of apartheid, many were never to live long enough to see liberation.

RIP Nelson, I salute you.

A lot of times when people die people pour it on thick regardless of it being deserved. In this case, you can't pour it on too thick. One of the greatest men of our era without a doubt.

A great man has passed away. We can all learn from what he have left behind. I hope he will rest in peace, because he earns it.

Ditto mine was the same and had never heard of him. Thailand is really isolated if people haven't heard of the great man.

Today we mourn his death- tomorrow, let us celebrate his life!

A true inspiration and one of my personal heroes and idols is gone!

Sad, sad day!

I have often thought that those years in prison and the isolation, made him appreciate many of the things that the rest of us overlook. He seemed to appreciate other people -- in the way that a person who had experienced isolation would simply enjoy seeing and talking to another person, even if it was somebody that most of us would not. I think the boredom gave him a special appreciation and happiness about some of the more mundane things that go with fame.

In the stream of life, some rocks get worn down and some get polished. He definitely got polished and he shone brightly with time.

Very nicely put.The quality I most honour was his magnanimity and his generous spiritedness - something he shared with Winston Churchill. He was able to relate as a human even to those who kept him captive. It is no coincidence that his white Afrikaaner prison guards revered him.

He had a lot that both sides in Thailand could learn from - but that discussion is for another day.
