Yes, this is stupid mismanagement, but...if the political field is becoming level, why Suthep's push to halt democracy because the ballot box is tilted too far to the one side and democarcy is out of balance?

His strategy, if the majority of the posters in this thread are correct, is completely illogical and unnecessary.

These two arguments (PT is on trouble and lets dissolve demiocracy) are diametrically opposed to each other. It's like saying the Dem strategists said, "PT is in big trouble next election, so let's quit parliament, start a street uprising, then boycott the election -- it will be a sure way to win moderate votes!"

So far what I have managed to understand from Suthep's plan is that he does not want another election to take place untill the legal framework is laid out for any elected goverment to follow to ensure that PTP "do whatever we want coz we got most votes" scenario does not happen again. I must say it does not sounds crazy if they really can see it through.

Strangely enough I live in Isaan in Surin and the farmers in the village (that includes me via the missus) and the surrounding village have been informed no money available for at least 1 month perhaps two months. That is called reality and real live experience of the current situation

The farmer who pledged rice, took most of them a loan from the BAAC Bank. 95% of all Thai farmers even don't qualify as the pledging scheme needs to be Grade A. Some of the farmers in our village have been rejected because their rice is of low quality. Isaan Rice can't be pledged.

Farners don't need to buy seeds for rice. If they harvested 200 packages of rice (25kg each) they keep 5-10 packs and use it as seeds to for the next harvest. They can't be that stupid to pledge all their rice which is still uncut by the way and have no more rice one months later.

In Isaan we sell to the small traders. The small traders make the money and send the rice to the large rice mills. The large Bangkok owned Chinese rice mills are the one that don't get paid and they make the association put pressure on the farmers. Rent a farmer not rent a mob. Chinese New Year is end of January, so its a custom that all debts must be paid before we start with the year of the horse.

If a farmer sells below 10 tons he is getting paid on the spot via a broker. The broker takes the risk to get the money from BAAC which gets the money from the government.

Good try Nation but only fools in Bangkok can full for that story.

We have at our damn in Sakon nakhon protesters for the last 2 years and they are sponsored by the Thai Farmers Association from Bangkok. They loose some rice due to the water levels and most of the times the claim are fabricated but again you have a middle men inside that does the negotiations. Last week one got compensation of 400,000 Baht but the agent got 200,000.

All those farangs jump on it that now are the rice farmers against Yingluck. This time she will win a landslide victory against Bangkok and the South.

Just yesterday we saw a line around 30 trucks delivering rice to a large Chinese Rice Mill. If those Rice Mills are worried they would not buy any rice more but with a margin of 25-30 from farmers that don't pledge rice and they get cash its still a lot of profit.

Example: 300 billion Baht as an example is just only 10 billion USD but its about a 2 billion Deal for those Chinese run rice mills from Bangkok that operates all over Thailand.

I like the post as it is true to life, they vote him in they vote him out BUT in certain cases he has to resign 555555555555555555 if he doesn't act the democratic way for the villagers. 5555 but in many larger villages the Amper big boss makes sure he performs, when he takes care of the poo yai, he takes care village villagers then vote for the crook at the Amper and in majority of cases here red areas. another kind of vote catching.

Problem now with the non payment and the Amper boss cannot do anything so they react against the local, then YS..PM. government.

So you're trying to imply that rice farmers in the north weren't paid but rice farmers in Isaan were paid??? Care to back that up with facts or is your post just a deliberate attempt to misinform?

If the Democrats would just let them see out a term of office, they'd end up disillusioning their supporters and the opposition would have a shot at getting elected.

But every time they get forced out of power before the chickens come home to roost for their failed policies, and up as as martyrs of democracy to boot. If their policies don't fail, then I guess hats off to them, but what chance is there of that?

Corn farmers were promised a subsidy of 1.50bt (?) per kilo of corn due to the closure of one of the two major (only?) corn processing factories in Bangkok and the consequent loss of competitive pricing. As I understand it, no money has been paid out to farmers yet, at least in our area, and farmers are pretty pissed off about it

Sp please tell us with your encyclopedic knowledge of Thailand, where you think these rice farmers are that have not been paid. Just what part of Thailand do you think they are from?

They come from everywhere and they can and will bring this country to an absolute standstill in a heartbeat. No amount of army or police will be able to stop them. They won't be using happy clappers and whistles and they won't be taking orders from the man in Dubai.

Something dark and very evil is fermenting at this very moment. The bourgeoisie student groups, and the labour unions, and the hangers-on who cling to their vested interests are incredibly myopic. Their attitude reminds me of "Let them eat cake".

In this referenced instance "they" come from the lower north near or on the Pitchit - Nakhon Sawan highway. That's a very long way away from the north-east.

Thai stockpiles of rice will still climb to 20.4 million metric tons next year even as (if) exports rebound 26% to 8.5 million tons

The price of Thai 5% broken white rice, an Asian benchmark, tumbled 23% to US$450 (14,400 baht) a ton this year

Global reserves of milled rice will be 179 million tons in 2013-2014.

And a telling statement from the FAO :

Thai authorities willingness to accept sales at a loss were enough to weigh heavily on market sentiment, said the Rome-based agency.

Now there's a statement "weigh heavily on market sentiment"

Translated into non diplomatic language it means "The rest of the worlds rice markets are highly peed off with what Thailand is doing"

Another interesting stat is :

Of the 4 million farmer credit cards out there (round numbers) the outstanding balance of cash advances was close to 8 billion at end of Nov, that's cash advances only.

The BAAC has 92 billion B of outstanding loans (to farmers) in 8 months starting 1 April.

Now that the farmers are not getting paid they wont be able to service these loans will they.

But no problem the BAAC only charges 7% interest on overdue accounts but they give a 5 month interest free period.

Did you know that those with farmers credit cards can only buy what they need at "participating vendors"

Leave you to speculate on what vendors might have to do to get "participating" status.

So the poor rice farmers may be deeper in the poo than simply not getting paid suggests.
