Farmers in hundreds of farm trucks heading to Bangkok

2-20-2014-10-18-56-AM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Tens of thousands of farmers from the lower northern and central regions in several hundreds of farm trucks and pickup trucks are now heading for Bangkok to demand immediate payment for their rice. The first group of farmers are expected to arrive late this afternoon in Bangkok to join their colleagues at the Commerce Ministry.

Latest report said the long convoy of farmers riding in their E-tan and E-tek farm trucks which moved as slowly as 20 kilometers an hour are in In-buri district. Their convoys of over a hundred of farm trucks caused inbound traffic on the Phaholyothin to a standstill as they travel on all lanes.

The farmers from Uthai Thani, Nakhon Sawan, Lopburi, Ang Thong, Singburi, headed to Bangkok from various meeting points but with the one destination, the Commerce Ministry.

Along the way to Bangkok, farmers were disrupted by red-shirt supporters .

In Lopburi a former ruling Pheu Thai party MP Phichai Kiatvinaisakul and a number of red-shirts urged them not to protest in Bangkok.

He accused farmers of being a tool of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC). But when farmers told them they just went to demand their money and nothing to do with politics, the angry former Pheu Thai party MP cursed and expelled farmers out of Lopburi.

Along the way to Bangkok, police set up several checkpoints along the Phaholyoth and Asian Highway to prevent clashes between farmers and red-shirt supporters of the government who wanted to stop them.

The first group of 2,000 farmers from Nakhon Sawan and Uthai Thani are expected to arrive in Bangkok late this afternoon.

Central farmers from Uthai Thani and Lopburi started their long march yesterday to join their colleagues now already in Bangkok.

They came from 400 villages in Uthai Thani on in E-tan, E-tek farm trucks to a meeting point at the Otop centre in Muang Uthai Thani district before starting the long journey together to Bangkok.

In my wife's village, which is 100% red shirt, most have not been paid and have no money to buy supplies for a new crop. Many owe money to illegal money lenders and are in dire straights.

This is a major event. All lanes on the highway are being occupied as tens of thousands of farmers form their steady stream to Bangkok. The UDD has now switched roles. They now stop the farmers along the way, trying to deter them - something that should surprise no one. The incident with the Pheu Thai MP is indicative of a party allegiance suddenly being withdrawn when their own status quo ( i.e. money, power, and influence ) is threatened. Yet another headache for Chalerm and the administration. The people will have their say. And the farmers' argument is undeniably just. It's truly power to the people. Thida and Jataporn can suck a lemon.

You can only plant a crop of rice if you have the money to pay for seeds, tilling, planting, fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides, and -- in many cases -- land rent. If you don't have the money, you can't. These farmers are poor because the government has impoverished them by not paying them for their previous crop. You should lower you level of smugness and open your eyes to the reality of the their plight.

Same for my wife's family. The whole village is in financial dire straights. Nobody there has any money. But STILL they vote for the Shinawatra clan. In the Sunday election a couple of weeks ago my wife was intimidated into voting. She said there would be "problems" if she didn't go back to the village to cast her vote.

Well... You don't see the PTP handing out cash to the farmers during their slow march south. There's love and loyalty, and then there's someone else's money.

You really have no clue do you that there may be many reasons they can't yet plant.

In my village right now the rice farmers are waiting for the irrigation canals to be opened.

They have been told at least another week.

I for one hope they go to Bangkok for the next week and demand the money they have been owed for the last 5 months.

(I guess) Are all of your posts based on guesswork.

You claim to live in Thailand and represent the red shirts but at the same time you don't even know what is happening on your own doorstep.

If the farmers are smart where you live, why don't you follow suit and try to be at least a little smart?

Same in my wife's village. It's crazy, but they hate the dems more than they hate the PTP. They are still loyal to the Shin clan even they they are getting screwed and still living below the poverty line.

My wife has been paid for her rice ,but this year she is not going to bother ,just to much trouble for to little cash ,so she has leased out her land instead .

I like it... The farmers are losing their fear of the powers that be.

The end is near for the Shins - but whats to follow - no ones knows.

The best and fastest solution is to seize the asset of Thaksin to pay the farmers, as suggested by Suthep.

I don't claim it I do live in Thailand and I represent myself not any red shirt group, just because some of my views are same as them doesn't mean anything. I know what I see with my own eyes, I don't need any of your nonsense or insults, if you don't like my remarks on what I see just pass them by. Your boring me now saai.gif

If they are smart, they will see the PDRC closed the bank route firmly.

just gets stranger by the day. keeps us off the streets though.... for now

Perhaps convenient but hardly constitutional
