BANGKOK, 21 February 2014 (NNT) – Farmers who have yet to receive their money from the government have called off its protest plan at Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

Speaking for farmers gathering in Ayutthaya province, former Chartthaipattana Party member Chada Thaiseth said the farmers angered by the government’s financially plagued rice support program would no longer march to Suvarnabhumi Airport, after they had been assured by the government that they would be paid for their pledged rice.

According to Mr. Chada, the farmers merely wanted to make a symbolic gesture, with no intentions to cause disturbances to air traffic.

Wonder if they've heard that before?

Nope it is the first time they have been told that....today. :)

Doesn't say they are not still in Bangkok to get things done in their eyes.

I bet some money changed hands to their leadership to make them buy that line about getting paid next week.

Pretty safe bet. Sort of like getting your reservations cancelled at the Park Hotel!

Certainly all credit is due to the farmers for taking their current action. However what sort of reaction can be expected if payment is not made as promised ?

Talk is cheap, however if those promises are not kept remember that ''revenge is a dish best eaten cold.''

The Shinwatra clique needs to tread very carefully, now they are putting themselves and their political cronies into a very dangerous corner if those promises are not fulfilled.

One is led to wonder just how long it may be before the Shinwatra family flee into the wide blue yonder and the desert sands this time and with how much money too.

Why the Airport?

Because it has the precedent of closing down the country and causing a past government to fall.

in fairness, they were planning to park up in the long-stay field and had promised not to disrupt flights.

I wonder if they were given petrol money for the return trip home ?

10,000 farmers from northern provinces return home

BANGKOK: -- About 10,000 farmers who travelled from lower northern provinces to Bangkok resolved Friday to return home instead of heading to rally at the Suvarnabhumi airport.

The farmers decided to return home after their leader, Former Chart Thai Pattana Party MP Chada Thaiset, was assured by the government that they would get their payments for their rice next week.

The farmers reached Ayutthaya's Bang Pa-in district Thursday and stayed overnight there. They travelled in about 1,000 farm tractors.

It is rather extraordinary that the administration can continue to promise payments when there is no legal or constitutional path open to them which would enable them to do so. All the solutions that they have come up with as of late have stalled for one reason or another. They even pulled their own recent request to the EC, presumably because the proposal lacked sufficient details. Fancy.

Why the Airport?

AC is good and there is a good food court

Well - the food wouldn't last that long would it? And unlikely any other food distribution would reach the airport very easily. They may not go the airport TODAY - but you better believe they'll head over there if they don't get what they want today. Next week is going to be very interesting.

Wonder if they've heard that before?

A news text from the other newspaper says it's being reported that farmers have agreed to return home on payment NEXT WEEK !

YL will just wave her magic wand and the cash will appear ?

I'm sure the farmers won't care where the money comes from but the rest of the country should.

Why make a symbolic gesture to a bunch of tourists who at best do not understand what is going on and at worst get scared and stay away from Thailand, and in both cases have absolutely no influence on the overdue payment to the farmers?

My guess is there leader was the one who got paid.

Hard to believe the farmers would stop with only YL making Yet another promise without their leader confirmimg it would be done.

Either some heavy threats or heavy bribes...or both, to make them turn around....

maybe they have consulted a seer

Peoples Council, end product rice price at a 'market level' of 10 baht a kg, production costs 12 baht per kg.

Suthep is not going to take this very well. He has now lost the farmers. He still has he family tho to support him.
