BANGKOK, April 3, 2014 (AFP) - Three government officials were shot dead on Wednesday in Thailand's insurgency-stricken south -- among them a woman who was then beheaded, police told AFP.

The trio, a village chief and two women assisting him, were gunned down as they drove on a remote road after attending a meeting in a notorious security 'Red Zone' in Yala province, a hotbed of the insurgency.

"One woman was shot and then beheaded, while another woman and a man were also shot dead," said Police Lieutenant Virasak Suwannadecha said, adding the victims were all Thai Buddhists.

Thailand's three Muslim-majority southernmost provinces are in the grip of a decade-long insurgency which has seen 6,000 people killed -- the majority of them civilians.

Shadowy militants are blamed for many of the most brutal attacks in their battle to win a form of autonomy from Thailand, which colonised the culturally-distinct region over a century ago.

Peace talks with insurgents representing some of the main groups have unofficially been suspended amid a six-month political crisis in Bangkok.

Observers say there has been a spike in the violence following Thailand's failure to respond to their demands to work towards a road map for peace.

They have stated they want a level of autonomy from Thailand, but have so far fallen short of asking for full separation at the talks.

Many local Malay-Muslim accuse Thai authorities of widespread human rights abuses and a lack of respect for their religion, culture and language.

Those grievances are seized upon by the militants as a reason for targeted killings of representatives of the Thai state, including teachers, government officials and security forces.

Rights groups accuse Thai security forces of acting with impunity and inflaming the situation with heavy-handed tactics.
But they have expressed hope the stalled peace process will be revived especially as Thailand appears to now recognise the need for a political solution to the 10-year conflict.

YALA, April 3 -- A village head in Yala's Bannang Sata district and his two female assistants were shot dead yesterday, and one assistant beheaded.

Police said an unknown number of assailants fired a volley of bullets into the victims who were in a pickup truck at a bridge at the entrance of Tambon Tano Pute in Bannang Sata.

All three persons in the pickup were killed. They ware identified as Iea Srithong, 46, Chaleaw Pikulklin, 49 and Urai Thapthong, 42. Ms Urai was beheaded after being shot to death.

Investigators said the three were returning from a meeting in Bannang Sata disrict office before the gun attack occurred at about 2.45pm yesterday.

The village head's .38 handgun was taken by the attackers.

In the nearby province of Pattani, a woman defence volunteer was killed in a gun attack while riding a motorcycle home in Pattani's Khok Pho district.

The attack occurred at around 4.40pm on Road Number 410 (Pattani provincial seat-Nong Chik), when two men on a motorcycle followed and shot her. (MCOT online news)

The practice of beheading comes out of a hadith (I believe) that says that without a head, a person cannot go to "Jannah" or paradise. That's how it got started, a superstition. I guess they're doing it for shock-value in the South.

Historically the bravery of an opposing army could have a huge bearing on the outcome of a battle even when the numbers were stacked against them. That's one element you wouldn't have to factor in fighting muslim soldiers.

It's a preferred method in which to slaughter "infidels", although this woman was apparently shot to death first, but it's not for shock value, Muslims have been beheading victims since the Dawn of time, it's just not widespread reported.

The Mujihadeen were beheading Russians in Afghanistan, and anywhere else there's been a conflict.

The shock factor is when it's reported as something out of the ordinary,if you've been around that culture for long enough, it doesn't have the shock effect anymore once you realise it's more common than reported, the shock factor with Iraq beheading's were more down to do with the fact they were videoing these acts and posting them to extremist websites, and sending them via MMS to each other.

They clearly don't value human life as much as we do, very sad to see more pointless losses of life.

The Southern insurgency is not only Thai problem. Sunni Muslims radicals are forcefully trying to ethnically cleanse a specific area of the country which they believe is theirs. Wherever there is a radical Sunni Muslims movement, there is some sort of a low scale civil war. Their modus operandi is always the same. Apart from killing infidels and government officials they will also 'happily' kill their own who dared to cooperate with authorities. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the beheaded person was one of their own. They treat even harsher Sunnis who cooperate with the authorities. Their main target is to prove that coexistence between different cultures and religions is impossible.

Yes, never see Buddhists do that, well except the Burmese of course, or wait hang on, the Sri Lankans as well....well at least Christians never do that anymore, well of course except where they do, Serbia, Croatia, Central Africam Republic, The Lords Resistance army in Uganda, or of course Hindus would never harm those of another faith except of course in India, where it happens on a regular basis.
