Thai army imposes night-time curfew across country

Good morning! My boyfriend and I have plans to travel to Thailand Monday, May 26th. Is there anyone living in the area that can shed a little light on the safety of the area (Bangkok, Sumai). Also, have they given a suggested end to the curfew? It would be helpful to hear from people in the area, rather than relying only on media coverage. If it is unsafe we will have to try to make some last min. travel changes. Thank you so much!

I flew out of Thailand 2 days ago. Seems my timing was perfect.

Feel sorry for all the people that are suffering financially because of this. The elite and their puppet Suthep can sit back knowing they got their way but they know in their hearts their time is short. Once you have awakened peoples desire for democracy and given them a taste there is no going back.

When an event i cant mention happens in the very near future their time will be up, even if they have secured a friendly government in power for when it happens. This of course is what this was all about..... corruption?? haha give me a break

Where have you been since November?

Suthep is part of the blame but the majority falls on the corrupt Government who caused all this mess in the first place.

Here in the US, the news stations are acting like Thailand has become a war zone and everyone is going to die. This is not helping my cause. Shut it, CNN!

In the US, 95% of the media is controlled by 5 corporations. Please don't drink the kool-aid they're selling, it's tainted.

Amen to that. I haven't drank that kool-aid in years. Unfortunately, some members of my extended family still do. Now they're all up in arms about us moving over there. "OMG, you're going to DIE if you go there? How could you even consider it?"

I'm just going to pretend I'm deaf for the next six months. What??? Can't hear you!!!

In my home country and I suppose most others also. If you have a travel insurance it's not valid now

Only if your insurace policy says so.

The insurance policy is only invalid if the claim is related to the political unrest. For example, if you have a fall and break a leg or suffer a heart attack, your insurance is valid. If you're robbed when outdoors after a curfew, then you're not covered.

Example- my kids school emailed to say closed tomorrow but open Monday.

thailand is currently no less safe than normal (although it's not switzerland)

you can still have a great holiday if night-time partying is not a priority for you

So I'm traveling from Koh Tao to Chiang Mai tomorrow, connecting flight from Don Muang gets into CM at 10:20, how do I get home or should I rebook for the next morning and stay near Don Muang overnight?

A coup can be inconvenient, no?

Travelers to and from airport are exempted if they have proof of flight with them. Just show your ticket/boardng pass if stopped.

thing is: most people have etickets - so no actual hard copy ticket. also boarding passes are issued at the airport after check in. surely you understand that

You can still print out an eticket, and/or you can keep the boarding pass for proof as you indicate you only arrive after curfew.

My poor wife is already getting withdrawal symptoms. No Thai soaps to watch only the Army boring everyone to bits.

The agitators have got what they deserved, a moribund country devoid of life

I believe Suthep, J'porn and Abhisit have been escorted to an army barracks and are, basically, under house arrest

So at least something good has already come out of the coup

@ThaiCookingChef

What do you expect them to do? Stay open in the face of a military ordered curfew? Especially when the streets are empty..?

It just goes to show, the Thais are law abiding people,

in the main centers its all closed down.

Exceptions in the country I am sure.

Try that in the West with a few hours notice

Maybe yours, but not mine. I was just reading the " Force Majeure" clause.

I regret having read through most of this thread.

Astonishing how little so many TV members know about the country they're supposedly living in.

This is real. It is not a run-through.

If you don't want to take a lot of unpleasant consequences, go home and take a break.

The US government has already denounced the coup, and every jurist with an above room temperature IQ knows it's illegal.

All bets are off now, and if you think you have any answers, worse fool you.

My only concern is how I will shelter my wife down the road. The people who live here have a much more serious problem than a flock of expat <deleted> can even imagine.

not really ,army tanks and machine guns will have that effect on most people

law abiding or not ,if it goes on for more than afew days more and more people

will start ignoring it until its just like the helmets on scooters "law" which has been effect

for so long i cat remember when it started but it has never really been adopted by the

thai people and they only wear it where there maybe police .....never really in the small sois

4 teenage boys or girls on a motorbike is another disgraceful act of laziness by the thai police

its bound to be illegal but normally ignored since they are children and dont have enough money

to pay a fine

It was real the last time also; I don't recall any expats or tourists having difficulty with the situation.

Unless your wife is a political bigshot or an outlaw protester she will be fine.

What do you think will happen? Do you think the military is going to start rounding up foreigners and putting us in detention camps?

seriously?

please show me an example of a legal coup d'etat.

this is my third peaceful coup here.

how will shelter your wife?

keeping a cool and avoiding hysteria would not be a bad place to start.

All those who were celebrating Martial Law on another thread, and the down fall of the Shinawatras - welcome to the real world. And next time, be a little more careful what it is you wish for!

Let's see, curfew vs the Shinawatras???

I'll take the curfew any day

Good night tourism.

I mean how does that even work now?

Very easy, you can not go out between 22pm and 5am.

If you do, you risk being arrested or shot.

But do not freak , it usually lasts for few days unless there is trouble

Excuse me, but there is no such thing as 22pm. There is 2200 hours and there is 10 pm.

Jeesh!

There is in Thailand (though they actually write it 22.00pm).
