Poll: People still want EC to organize elections

BANGKOK, 11 January 2015 (NNT) - Suan Dusit Poll has found that a majority of Thai people disagreed with the idea to have the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Education arrange elections instead of the Election Commission (EC).

The poll, conducted with 1,247 people, showed that more than 62% of the respondents did not think the two ministries should replace the EC in organizing elections, saying that it should continue to be the task of the EC who was an independent organization directly responsible for the matter. 37.75% said they agreed that the two ministries should help arrange elections since their cooperation would lead to more credibility and accountability in elections.

47.8% of the respondents said elections would be more systematic with sufficient manpower if the two ministries help organize them. 22.53% said they believed the two ministries would be able to help prevent poll fraud.

However, most of the respondents or 66.67% said the EC should be in charge of organizing elections due to its knowledge, expertise and experience. 17.01% said the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Education should join hands in arranging polls. 7.82% said they wanted the Ministry of Interior to be responsible for the matter while 4.42% said the Ministry of Education should be tasked with election administration.

Can remember before the 1987 constitution when elections were organised by the Interior Ministry that Thai media always used to emphasise the built in advantage in elections of any party that controlled the ministry, since it was assumed that the ministry organised them in a corrupt manner..

BANGKOK: -- Dusit Poll released its latest poll showing the majority of people it asked have voiced opposition to the proposal for the Ministries of Interior and Education to jointly take charge of holding the next general elections.

The poll by the research arm of the Suan Dusit Ragabhat University conducted survey of 1,247 people across the country during January 3 – 10 for their opinions on a proposal to allow the two ministries to hold general elections in place of the Election Commission.

The result revealed that 62.25% disagreed, with reason that general election is very significant and that it should be the duty of the Election Commission which is an independent organisation.

But 37.75% agreed, reasoning that it would be a good sign to have the election held under cooperation from more agencies. They also said the election would be cross checked and would have more accountability.

Asked on who should be most appropriate to hold the election, 66.67% said the Election Commission, 17.01% gave Interior and Education as joint hosts, 7.82% favoured Interior, and 4.42% named Education.

Only 4.08% said holding election should be the joint effort of the Election Commission, Interior and Education ministries.

When asked what they were most concerned of in the election, 45.41% addressed transparency, neutrality and vote-buying.

33.56% said election boring by voters, and 21.03% pointed to conflict and unacceptance of election turnout.
