Recruiting agencies blame choosy job seekers for increased unemployment

BANGKOK, 25 March 2015 (NNT) – Employment agencies have cautioned job seekers to be less particular about work, saying that overly-critical choices can do more harm than good.

The warning came in response to the latest statistics, which showed that the jobless rate in February doubled to 1.06 percent, or 400,000 from 200,000 year-on-year. Job seekers with degrees in IT or foreign languages reportedly have a 50 percent chance of getting employment.

Recruiting agencies blamed the increased unemployment to job seekers that were under-qualified, unable to meet application deadlines, and too particular about finding work.

Employment firms claimed that job seekers, especially Generation X and Y recent graduates, tend to be picky about their future employees. They added that their fussiness may force companies to hire abroad for both low- and high-level positions.

For those wishing to work for and progress in an internationally recognized organization, experts suggested that they gather work experience and sharpen their skill for three to five years.

Could it be that the potential employees, do trust the employment agencies. How many Thais have wound up as slave labor in Finland, Israel, United States and god knows were else. Than there is the policy of paying the agencies hundreds of thousand baht.

In my day, we took any crap job we could find and were thankful... Then after getting experience and learning how to deal with a variety of employers and coworkers, Take that knowledge along with mobility to find the best fit to reach our goals..

And that's how I made my first million. (baht)

Well said but attitudes have changed a lot and not for the better.

On one hand they have some right to pick and choose, but many young graduates today have a very strong entitlement belief.

This also seems to connect to the research which indicates that the number of new graduates who fail probation for their first job is increasing rapidly.

It might be a good idea to start up like what the UK had years ago. YTS. Youth, training, scheme. Schools allow a jobs adviser to meet students who contacts companies around the area who other different kinds of occupations. When students are in high school, say M4. They are sent to meet the councilor and are offered one day a week, on the job experience at whatever jobs are available. This will give them experience and will also help them to choose a field that they are interested in to study at university and after a job that they will have experience in. That's just an idea.......................

Thailand's labour market doesn't work that way. Here's a reality check. Banks used to set a bachelors degree as the minimum requirement for hiring customer service staff which is an entry level position. They won't hire people over the age of 30 preferring under 22-27. Now they have upped the minimums in some locations to a masters. They try for experienced staff, i.e. not recent graduates. All that for minimum wage.

Salary levels for recent university graduates are low. The firms refuse to provide equitable wages, instead preferring to keep the bloated upper management pay scale and paying the minions crap wages.

BTW, there's a big sign up in Paradise, Patong that is visible from Rat U . The sign is offering employment for young men to come work in the gay entertainment zone. In return for <deleted> themselves they get a room to stay (shared with 10 others). Thats what the job prospects are for some. The young men and women of Thailand aren't as eager to prostitute themselves anymore for work experience.

We are discussing 400k out of a quite large population.

Would you be willing to work for less than the 15k minimum wage for univerity graduates after getting an IT degree, added to 6 day work weeks and 12 hour days?

For the people saying that they took any jobs... What was the unemployment rate in your country at the time?

They could always turn to rice farming, lots of debt, almost no income, no future, it's strange but the young are a bit picky theses days, no one wants to do it.

Why are there more than 2 million immigrant workers from Myanmar alone........They are employed in GREAT numbers here in CM

1. Thais don't want to do LOW work such as well just about anything really from labouring, service staff to retail

2. Thai employers don't want to pay either. Cheaper to employ & abuse migrant workers

Why would anyone be other than sullenly resentful to have a crappy job with poor pay and conditions? Thank god not as many people will put up with it these days I say, or back to serfdom we would go.

If the alternative was starvation..................Yes

Before I found my way in life, I had all kind of strange jobs all in order to survive.

Had quite wealthy parents, but would rather starve than ask for handouts!!

So yes IMO, they are lazy and spoiled kids.

Get a job, and move on from there................

Sorry but I am unaware of any fast food place paying the amount you claim. IT degree holders are mentioned in the OP

Haven't seen the sign.

Haven't sat in on an interview for the job and don't know anyone that has.

Have never seen all of the accommodations for all bar employees.

Don't care what others choose to do with their bodies.

I don't know all the prospects for all the people looking for employment.

I can't speak for the eagerness, or lack thereof, for all young men and women in Thailand since I have not talked to them all.

Being a prostitute is none of my business.

Choice and freedom is a wonderful commodity and I'm not the keeper of the bank they are stored in.

Live and Let Live.

BTW, this begs the question. How much money are the recruiting agencies making, and are they shifting the blame for their inability to "make sales" by filling vacant positions?

How many foreigners working in Thailand have good experiences with agencies?

My husband gets calls from headhunters every month. He would never take a job pushed by one of them. As an IT professional ( specialist) almost every company which might need him, knows how to contact him. Why would anyone use an agency in Thailand?

My ex is highly educated, experienced working with international company. Was hired by Thai hiso company at greater pay, but left that after one week to another international company? Why? She had been exposed to firms that value employees, don't expect or want slavish backside kissing, and treat them as humans with brains. Many if not most Thai companies are feudal in structure, poor in organization and management of human resources, and I say good for those who are smart enough not to join in that mess.

Tomoro's headline:

"Unemployed blame overly stingy and demanding employers and a rise in migrant workers for increased unemployment"

Day after tomorrow:

"Immigration department to continue their drive to validate work permit and non-B visa applications. Ministry of Labour to work together with Ministry of Commerce in evaluating misuse of the 51% Thai ownership Law through illegal use of Thai frontmen/ladies"

In the borough of Ealing in UK, I know of architects and lawyers working as road sweepers for the council as they can't find a job.

Here they are choosy and in no way they can lose face.

Let them starve......they will learn eventually.

in Australia in the early 90's I had a uni professor as a "go for", he had been laid off as the uni cut some courses and he simply wanted to earn a wage. Really nice guy and he was prepared to do a lot of the dirty work as well, something it seems thais refuse to do, face is too important. Wifes half sister is a "bar girl/singer" and always complains she has no money(doesnt earn much), she was offered a factory job and refused as that would be "too hard" and beneath her(no education, as thick as 2 short planks)blink.png

In relation to the 'bargirl'singer' part with 'no money', do I need to take the "thick as two planks" literally or is it state of mind only?rolleyes.gif

Most of my wife's brothers and sisters are working somehow, but together they seem to have an awful lot of kids who regularly are in need of my wife's help.
