Three dead and dozens injured in Oklahoma parade horror crash

OKLAHOMA:-- At least three people were killed and more than 30 injured on Saturday after a suspected drink driver ploughed into a gathering of former and current students of Oklahoma State University in the United States.

Witnesses described bodies being flung dozens of feet into the air as the car slammed into the throng at an intersection in Stillwater, some 130 kilometres northeast of Oklahoma City, as the parade celebrating the school’s homecoming was ending.

“At first we thought it was part of the show,” Konda Walker, a 1991 graduate of OSU, told the local Stillwater News Press.

“People were flying 30 feet (9 meters) into the air like rag dolls.”

At least eight people were critically injured. Children are among the most seriously hurt.

Some attending at first though the fast-moving car’s arrival was part of the parade.

The driver, identified as 25-year-old Adacia Avery Chambers, was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol, according to Captain Kyle Gibbs of the Stillwater Police.

The suspect does not appear to have been a student at Oklahoma State University, Gibbs said. The mayor’s statement said she was a resident of Stillwater.

Hours later the intersection was still littered with clothes, blankets, lawn chairs and water bottles belonging to the victims.

After the crash, Oklahoma State University said it decided against cancelling its homecoming football game, which went ahead as planned against Kansas and was dedicated to the victims.

^^Looks like the Army Soldiers are helping with crowd control. What an odd thing to post.

Condolences to the families of all involved.

Just as a matter of record, the US military personnel on the scene are members of the Oklahoma National Guard who were participating in the homecoming parade. They did what they were trained to do. Headed for the problem, not away from it.

PS: The fourth victim was only two years old. My apologies for the mistake in the above post.

There is something seriously wrong with US society and it's not just guns.

One has to wonder why is there some much senseless violence and unnecessary deaths occurring in such an advanced and wealthy country?

If guns didn't cause this, then it must be the fault of the car.

This "senseless violence" was caused by some drunk driving a car at speed into a crowd of people.

What country are you from?

Funny, it looked to me like one of them was administering first aid while the other two were waiting to help. No idea why they were there. Maybe an Army unit was in the parade. Big Army base at Ft. Sill, OK. They like to participate as a recruiting device.

Most of the country is no longer wealthy.

My reply was directed at an insensitive post which has thankfully been removed.

A tragic accident in the US draws such negative responses, but the accident in France on this forum the other day caused not hardly a negative remark about that country.

RIP to the victims.

Plowing into a mass of people while drunk is not so much an 'accident' but rather irresponsible, if not malicious behavior that happens far too often in the US.

The sad thing is that many Americans like to dismiss these as 'accidents' as isolated incidents when in fact, they occur on a regular basis.

I have said the same thing many times. It's not the availability of guns that has anything to do with the number of violent senseless deaths in the US. There are much deeper social problems at play.

Ban cars. Yeah, I know that the US has a Car Culture, but all these horrific deaths. Cars should be taken out of showrooms. If cars were outlawed, only outlaws would have cars. The horror! The horror!

Drunk drivers who cause a death or injury in the US will often spend more time in jail than someone in Europe will get for first degree murder. I don't think these incidents are dismissed easily by anyone.
