CHIANG MAI: -- A white tiger has died of suspected blood poisoning at Chiang Mai Night Safari, said Mr Saravuth Srisakul, director of the zoo, on Tuesday.

Accopanied by a veterinarian , Mr Raksiri Nomsiri, Mr Sarawuth told the media that there was bleeding from the lung of the 12-year old Por Petch after an autopsy and it was suspected that the white tiger suffered from blood poisoning.

However, he said that he was waiting for the result of blood tests from a laboratory to determine the exact cause of the death which would come out in the next 7-10 days.

Por Petch was the first white tiger presented to Chiang Mai Night Safari from Zoological Organstion or Khao Din Zoo in Bangkok 11 years ago. It has so far given birth to 13 cubs.

As for the dead tiger, he said that the animal would be stuffed and kept at the zoo.

Mr Raksiri, meanwhile, said that the tiger did not show any sign of sickness until it suddenly collapsed to its death from lung bleeding. He disclosed that white tiger normally lives up to about ten years because of its defective gene compared to ordinary tigers which live up to 20 years.

They can always pick another one up from the "tiger park" in Subic Bay.

They've got loads they don't need in the cages at the back.

They're a bit thin mind you, but I'm sure you can fatten them up pretty quickly.

Maybe White tigers only live for 10 years in the wild,as it would be more difficult

for them to catch prey,BUT in captivity where the food is supplied, there should be

no difference, between a white and normal tiger, so bit B/S spinning there.

yes that how things seem when you don't do routine examinations and care for your animals.

sort of like brakes on tour buses.

Likely sever sepsis caused by pneumonia in the lungs.

For humans it needs to be treated immediately in ICU and can still be fatal.

In animals detection of sepsis requires an extensive medical montoring program as obviously an infected animal cannot raise any complaints.

NS needs to examine all its tigers to see if this is a one-time incident or represents a pathological vector among the whole tiger population.

I lived in Chiang Mai when they opened the night safari. Many complained and protested and many of the animals died within the first few months. Money, as always in Thailand, overrides everything else.

Wow.

Perfect...Stuffed and mounted. All I need are the insides anyway.

I honestly thought that this one had been eaten by rich Chinese tourists long ago....
