BANGKOK: -- Transport authorities are considering to impose lifetime driving ban on the driver of the Mercedes-Benz which hit another vehicle killing two persons.

The lifetime ban was raised after a team of transport authorities from Ayutthaya province, the scene of the fatal car crash, met police investigating the crash yesterday.

Transport authorities were concerned about the behaviour and conduct of the driver, Jenpob Wiraporn, while at wheel of the vehicle.

If evidence indicates that he was a reckless and dangerous driver, then they will consider permanently revoking his driver’s license.

In another development of the controversy over the incident, experts from Mercedes Benz who have been asked to inspect the vehicle and help find out the speed of the car upon collision with the Ford car, have stated that they will have to postpone and gave no specific alternate date.

Pol Lt Col Nithi Banthuwong, the deputy commander of the Zone 1 Institute of Training and Research of Scientific Crime Detection, yesterday attended a meeting with investigators to monitor developments in the case.

The incident occurred on March 13 and resulted in the death of two persons who were in the vehicle that was hit at high speed by the driver of the Mercedes Benz automobile.

He said police investigators focused on the trajectory of the vehicle and other physical evidence such as skid marks and braking points as well as the actual point of impact.

What they found was pretty conclusive showing long skid marks several meters long indicating that the vehicle was travelling at very high speed.

As such they were able to confirm that the driver Jenpob was driving recklessly.

But he said what remained to be determined is the actual speed in which the Mercedes Benz was travelling at the time of impact which needs to be confirmed by specialists from Mercedes Benz.

Meanwhile Pol Lt Col Nathapol Samsaen, the deputy commander of the First Forensic Science Division revealed that representatives from Mercedes Benz Thailand had asked to postpone their inspection to an unspecified date.

This was because they were waiting for the arrival of certified specialist from abroad to help in the inspection.

They go on to say that inspection into the vehicle’s ECU (electronic control unit) has yet to be done but a preliminary inspection should be completed by the end of the week.

Eyewitness testimony is still being collected particularly from the staff of the Rama 4 toll gate where Jenpob had crashed the barrier prior to the crash and closed-circuit TV footage along the route that the Mercedes Benz’s took leading to the crash are also being looked at.

Jenpob is still receiving medical attention at the Samittivej General Hospital in Bangkok.

Physicians plans to operate on his knee-cap that was injured in the crash next week.

Upon completion of the operation and when he is able to walk again his family stated that he will be making reparations and compensation to the family of the deceased victims, and will also enter monkhood as a merit making.

What a load of crap! No charges for manslaughter, etc, just a confiscation of his driving licence, and a week living in a local temple.

Because Mercedes Benz are worried if they "snitch" on their customer, they would loose out on millions of baht , The new Mercedes Benz models have a black box just like planes. give info about speed on impact, if any brakes used etc etc....

Any good physicist can determine the speed of the car simply by timing the distance traveled between highway markers that anyone can go and measure the distance between the markers. Any good physicist can do that. Unfortunately Mercedes doesn't employ physicists in Thailand and would be surprised if they did. Maybe better experts in the crime forensics division.....

All the reasons why this will NOT happen are already in the script:-

When, and if, this case ever reaches trial, there will be a dozen excuses put forward why this man cannot be held responsible for what he did and whatever 'punishment' he receives will be watered down by excuse's such as 'His testimony has been helpful to the authorities'.... he has 'entered the Monkhood to cleanse himself of wrongdoing'.....'he has made reparations and compensation to the families' etc etc.

In any 'civilized society' where Human lives matter the man would be sent down for a minimum 10 years realistically, and be out for good behaviour after around 7 years but Thailand being what it is, i doubt he will spend a single night behind bars.

He has been charged for the deaths, a court will decide the outcome just as it does in US.

Transport Authorities are considering revoking his licence, they have nothing to do with the bringing of criminal charges.
