I was playing around and discovered I am able to watch the BBC iPlayer on my computer if I switch on a VPN. However the same set-up does not work for Channel 4. When I try it, I always get a message saying I need to switch off an ad-blocker. I don't have an ad-blocker. Is it recognising my VPN as an ad-blocker?

Any advice would be welcome.

Would life be easier in terms of watching UK TV if I had an Android Box? I know nothing about them.

Are you referring to watching catch up and via Channel 4 own web site? I tried it with Hola VPN set to UK with Chrome browser and the web site said I needed to turn off ad-block. I turned it off and it worked.

For live Ch4 just watch it without any VPN using Kodi with any number of free addons.

Thanks for your info.

Yes Channel 4 own web site.

Did you turn off your VPN or turn off ad-block? I have no ad-blocker but it says I do. So I cannot turn it off.

What is Kodi? I am sorry I am a non-digital banana.

I turned on VPN for UK IP address and turned off adblock. Maybe try another browser if you get erroneous ad-block message? I don't get that message using Chrome browser.

Kodi is a free media player that streams anything - (but I cannot get the Ch4 playback addon to work with it - only live Ch4, maybe others have more success?) , but bit of learning curve if you don't know about it.

Just tried again various Channel 4 features, different browsers, VPN off and on, all failed.

Either ad-block warning or geo-restriction warning or just flashing not playing.

I will play around with Kodi.

Just looked at Filmon on the laptop.  Doesn't seem to be anything close to HD, more like 480.  Maybe it's better via a box?

If you use the free version it's SD (or slightly worse), you need a subscription for HD.

Ah.  Cheers.  Seems to be a fair glut of these services, just a case of sorting out the best for what I need (best spread of channels inc films and documentary + Thai TV if possible, not fussed about sports channels) which have good service (HD and little buffering) AND that are likely to be around beyond a few months.  I'm reluctant to pay out a year up front for any of them, sure it's cheaper, provided they don't vaporise after 4 months!! VOD / catchup also useful.  Of course they all promise fantastic quality and a brilliant service, how that matches reality I don't know.  I read about lots of problems with them all.  I'll likely get the Thai Channels when I go for AIS fibre and their free Playbox so less fussed about them now.  What I do want to avoid is a bunch of different boxes for different services.  Stalker for instance (according to their site) say their annual package ONLY works on a Mag 254, not Kodi and not on any emmulator.  So far looking at:

Pulse TV: UK and Thai channels. 1,000 for a one month.  10k for a year (assuming they are still around in a year!)

Filmon / uk4gtV: Like Stalker $150 pa.  Have their own box that their site proudly says 'compare to Apple TV, Fire TV etc etc' then gives no comparison information??  Huh?

Thai Expat TV (VOD) but limited range of channels.

Smash TV: £45 per year / £7.50 pm.  Gotta be the most unwieldy and user unfriendly channel list I've seen - scroll, scroll, scroll!!

Flawless IPTV: (No VOD) UK based / worried about international internet speeds?

ILIKEHDTV (VOD)(UK and Thai) Channels

Stalker - Seems quite good.  $150 per year but only runs on a Mag 254, not on Kodi or  emulators

Premier Expat TV (VOD): Not researched this one yet or even if it's a separate service to Xpat TV.

Premier Expat TV is basically Sky/BT. I used to have the full package which is good value for the number of channels and 8 days on-demand.

I now only subscribe to the sports channels which have recently improved in quality on one or two of the channels that weren't 100% before.

I also have ThaiExpat.tv and Netflix and want for very little. All my TV is on-demand and reliable. Another bonus is that I don't have to suffer Kodi.

I tried to use the liteiptv 24 hour free offer they sent an immediate confirmation email
but no access to the addon download or user and password for another couple of hours by that time i had switched off the computer and gone out for the rest of the day. so next day I have all the imformation downloaded and installed onto my ancient XBMC Frodo 12.3 running on even older windows XP
everything seemed to work except the most important bit of moving pictures and sound ??
why didnt it work ? well because it seems the 24 hours start from when the first confirmation email is sent and not from the first rime you try to access their service..just a heads up.

All the UK freeview channels are available on uktv.webtv.to. Has a five minute delay but no buffering, and you can 'dial' back in time with a panel that looks like a ruler along the bottom of the screen.

You need to have the correct and latest version downloaded.

Go to uktvnow.net/download.php and scroll down to the bottom of the page and select vesion 7.6 ( for firestick and android box).

This seems to have gone tits up? Just a few poor channels to choose from now and no info on the web site about whats happening!?

It seems they have mislabled the 'Show Ad' button as 'HD'.

I expect that may be working but I was referring to  uktv.webtv.to mentioned by Bangkok Barry which is another app altogether that runs on Windows and has currently gone into useless mode. Perhaps they have plans, who knows the web site says nothing?

My UKTV is working fine. I have all the BBC and ITV stations, including BBC News, Al Jazeera, Sky News and more. For free. Try downloading the exe file (again?) from http://uktv.webtv.to/ where it lists all their channels.

Hi,

Thanks so much for that feedback. So I tried again, uninstalled, re-downloaded installed but it wouldn't start at all then. Could not connect to server. I then tried another PC and it worked. So on my problem PC I uninstalled, deleted all the app data files, deleted every reference to it in the registry then reinstalled and it worked! Not only that I now have even more channels than before for some reason. Previously I had about 27 channels which dropped back to about 12 channels recently and now there's 43.
