Why are there no Go-Go Bars in KhaoSarn Road ?

Well...it could happen ...but so far they have not catered to it or allowed it to happen because of Zoning laws more so than anything else....as pointed out by others ......but it could happen regardless of the zoning while who ever did want to start it would have to deal with the police in the area and while the local police would have to agree or disagree and it would not be cheap...as in, probably 40 percent of the revenues would have to go to the police or No Go......No Show....and then the police would probably take it over and force the owner , whoever that may be , out of the business and the police and their appointed associates run the bar and make all the money .

More than likely they would love it if You or someone else started the bar and then they take over the bar and take all the revenues for themselves, as they can do that.

Or they agree to allow you to open a Go Go Bar and you pay them say 1 million baht UP FRONT money and then...."So sorry can not open the bar now"  because of this phoney reason or that BS reason and say:  "So solly.....Money rou not can gib bak"

Cheers

Not at all there my friend....You just try to open up a Go Go bar in such a manner and you will find out the hard way.

If you think you or anyone can do it without the approval of the police or the police being involved then you are vastly mistaken.

Also if you think you can trust the police to honor a previous agreement then you are also mistaken.

There was a bit more than police approval (which I don't doubt) that you wildy speculated about!

I remember hearing recently it got raided and closed because of underage girls (not enough tea?)

I went to that area 2 times way back when and I was the only foreigner there along with the foreigner friend I was with the first time...but the second time I did not see any other foreigners.

Most of the bars I went into were not like the Go Go bars in Pat Pong or Nana or Soi Cowboy, having a large dance stage and the whole dance stage filled with girls...rather a small dance platform and 1 or maybe 2 girls dancing on the stage and or dancing and jiving about in the bar and more or less like a hostess bar cum Go Go bar and mostly small venues.

But that was back in 1990 and I can only imagine it has changed and some establishment are big, glitzy affairs and lots of bling while many remain as small, more private affairs.

I remember that myself and my friend became aware that many of the girls were hesitant to talk with us but when they over heard we could speak Thai well enough they became somewhat chatty  ...but myself and my friend both agreed that more than likely most of them would not readily go with either one of us because all eyes were on them while sitting with the 2 foreigners and if we tried to arrange to go with one of the girls of our liking then there could very well be a stigma involved because the girls in the bar that went with the foreigners would be gossiped about and possibly some bad feelings, or what ever ( who knows exactly ) when the other bar girls or the Thai male doormen / bouncers or the Thai patrons knew that the girls went with a foreigner.

No doubt the girls have boyfriends working in that bar or surrounding bars while near certain they have some Thai boyfriend attached to them someway ..some how...or regular Thai patrons .....so we did not bother trying to ask any of the girls if they wanted to go with either of us.

Some were cute and pretty and some were not attractive...same as everywhere and probably more of them underage than in the Foreigner entertainment venues

Cheers

supply and demand.

backpackers are not by nature and culture sex tourists.

they are also, generally speaking, not old, bored, bald, desperate or unable to attract opposite or same sex partners without having to pay. i have no experience of being a sex tourist but i very much doubt it is more fun than being a backpacker. i know i've been there, it's a blast.

dont believe the negative comments about backpackers made by people on this site, they are made from an ignorant and judgemental stand point.

Generally speaking you are generalising in your description of "sex-tourists"

So your idea about generalising what backpackers tend to do, you gladly do the same to other groups.

Can I say ignorant, judgemental, negative are certainly valid for your ideas.

"Local culture"???  You think backpackers are interested in "local culture"??  They sit on their doughy farang asses in Khao San Rd for two weeks straight, getting their hair braided, buying tourist trinket crap, dancing in discos playing techno mixes of R&B hits current five years ago, and eating banana pancakes and fruit shakes, save for a few trips out into "the wild" of pre-packaged "floating markets," etc., that have absolutely NOTHING to do with how the average Thai lives.

The things they do, the foods they eat, the locals they interact with with their jaded attitude toward foreigners, tired broken English and multiple scams, they could be in Bali, Katmandu, or Goa, and the "experience" would be 100% the same.  "Local culture" my <deleted> <deleted>.

Did you understand what I meant?,, hardly believe you assumed I paid $100 a bottle,, so if you understood,,, what's the problem? Don't really feel like going thru the trouble of changing/selecting a keyboard option to display the proper Thai Baht $.... jeez

Prefixing the amount with THB would solve the problem and avoid any confusion.

Lets face it guys .

The back packers are out there experiencing life .

The sex -pats are former staying at home guys , drinking beer and watching porn movies , move to Thailand after getting divorced and living out their porn movie fantasies .

Have to disagree with you on this one max.

Those whom you describe as sex-pats are just as likely to be lifelong womanisers, always getting more than their share as they are to be lifelong never left home, never had a relationship and never been with a woman they have not paid for.

And both extremes are just as likely to fall for the five card trick and marry a bg.

What?! My experiences when I have the misfortune of breezing through y

The backpacker belts of asia is that theyre often boorish, drunken knobs who arent that clever at all. The worst and most embarrassing seem to hail from Britian, Australia and the UK. Absolutely no class or sense.

Yes that's right. In your infinite wisdom, you have determined my academic history simply by reading one post I made.

Perhaps you might go back to school yourself. The word 'you' is not represented in English by the letter 'u'. This is not an acceptable abbreviation, unless you are 12 years old and text messaging your girlfriends on your smartphone to organise a pyjama party.

I refuse to communicate any further with those who make no effort to write properly.

And the word is 'than', not 'then'.

I went out with some backpackers on KSR when i first got here, and after a few beers they all wanted to go and see a 'ping pong' show.

Plenty of touts offering to take them too.

Yes, I think this is much of the problem. Backpackers are generally young and open minded and travel the world to see whatever they can, albeit on a stretched out budget. However, the touts and tuktuk mafia tend to whisk them off to the worst kind of places, with highly dubious upstairs shows and exorbitant hidden fees, so there's a sense that the whole thing is dangerous, exploitative and sleazy and better avoided. Those who do hop in a tuktuk and go and see a show report back to their friends with the worst kind of stereotypes, probably unaware that the majority of bars are pretty innocuous and friendly and would hardly offend the casual visitor, usually with little more than coyote girls in bikinis dancing on stage.

The geography of khaosan doesn't help either, out on a limb from the city centre makes it less than easy for tourists staying tbere to bother with the trip across town and back home.

As a point of interest, some of the old backpacker's bibles (Lonely Planet being one) from the pre internet era tended to be very politically correct when mentioning these parts of town, implying that only the seriously depraved would ever venture over there. Sometime in the past couple of decades this view softened and a much more neutral view is given nowadays.

I believe it requires a special license and no more of those are being issued.  I seem to remember one bar forgetting to renew it on Soi Cowboy and did not do it in time so it lapsed and they could not get a new one because new ones are not being issued.... so it had to repurpose the bar.

Probably some other informal "licenses" to some organizations involved also

Totally agree with this.  The well run, 'nice' Gogo bars are actually quite fun places to hang out for a drink or two, if only to say you've been to one, and you even see the odd white girl in there enjoying the fun.  The upstairs bars of Patpong are not.

As mentioned by earlier posters, the answer is zoning and has nothing whatsoever to do with tourist profiles. This came into being through Thaksin and his puritanical sidekick Purachai in 2001. Khaosan was mentioned specifically in the debate about nightlife areas and the possibility was rejected outright by Purachai:
"Khao San road is on Rattanakosin island where there are lots of temples and cultural sites.... Tourists are here because they want to see natural beauty... They don't want to see exotic dancers. The nightlife is secondary.''

Purachai was very much into early closing, and the bane of the nightlife industry during those years. He had less power however over the areas that had been operating for decades. Patpong got popular in the sixties -  initially due to the many airline offices in the area (and subsequently the influx of GIs during the Vietnam War years), Cowboy arose in the seventies, and Nana the eighties. Other areas came and went, but could be set up far more easily prior to the implementation of these rules... for instance the ill-fated Clinton Plaza flattened by Chuwit in 2003.

Ton of backpackers have more money than 50% of Thaivisa users over 50.

Many travel the "backpacker way" because they are outgoing people eager to meet others. Often fairly fit so no desire to stick it where 2000 other guys went and pay for it. Especially in Bangkok where you can pick up a normal girl easily.

There's probably a few guys on here that didn't want hear/see your last statement. Lol. 'Normal' [emoji18]Hehehe![emoji1417]
