They applied for bail, but the Central Criminal Court said that, as the offences were serious with heavy penalties, they were a flight risk.

Therefore, the bail request has been sent to the Appeal Court.

 

So, in  the clink for now, at least.

They won't do time. The gov't got what it wanted in the conviction. They got to seize the cash. 

Though one has to wonder how many other bribes they demanded but were not caught for or not indicted for due to lack of evidence. Where there is smoke there is fire. Likely this wasn't the first time. Just the first time they were caught.

She and her daughter have been indicted in Los Angeles with conspiracy and eight other counts. If convicted, they each face up to 20 years in prison.

 

So Juthamus and her daughter would have been given 20 years each in prison in the US. That's why the hefty sentences today in court.

 

The saddest part of all this is using her daughter as an accomplice to her crime. But greed got the better of Juthamus and now she has not only ended her life but the life of her daughter also. Very sad indeed.

Released tomorrow on bail during the appeal which will no doubt go on as long as the sentence is. 

 

No extradition to the US while they are involved in the Thai case.

Very harsh sentences. Somethin' doesn't smell right here. Why don't they name the Americans. Surely those who give and those who take are both culpable.

I would hold my clapping for until they are both actually inside a proper prison and been there for 2 years at least without falling seriously ill in a few days and shifted to a well furnished hospital room, like the ex Mayor of Pattaya.

Assuming they actually go to jail in the first place. There is a very good chance they will simply fade away or flee the country.

The Americans were named, tried, found guilty and sentenced in a US Court a number of years ago.

After the 62 million is confisticated will they give it back to the rightfull owners of the filmfestival?

6 months maybe a bit light for corrupting Gov. officials of a foreign country but 50 yrs and 44 yrs. Something still smells here. Sure corruption is bad but it's endemic here. Top to bottom. A way of life really that most Thais hate but accept that, that's the way it is. Someone wants these two out of the way.

Proceeds of crime - in certain western countries, you don't even need to be convicted, just suspected, and they can seize your assets. I remember John Oliver doing a spot on his show a couple of years ago about asset forfeiture in the States. Thai cops would have a field day if they could do what the American cops get away with.

Doesn't matter how long the trial took, they still got 94 years between them and lost B62,000,000.  So far they're not out on bail, although that could happen if the court allows it, neither have they absconded to live overseas.

 

Congratulations on being so negative, just as you would have been if they have been found not guilty.  Thailand can't win with some people, can it?

They were jailed also in the US some time ago.

Who are the "rightful owners"?  Do you mean the corrupt, guilty and jailed American couple who paid the bribe?  No one gets their bribe returned if the receiver is caught!

 

By the way, the owners of the film festival were the Thai government, I believe, as they, through TAT, were the ones awarding the contract.
