The "bar beers"  weren't around in the sixties.    I came here in 1967 and plenty of bars and some go-go places  but "bar beers" weren't yet established.      If I had to guess the bar beers started to appear around the mid to late seventies.

Hmmmm. What is your definition of "barbeer"? Given the presence of GIs on R and R from Vietnam, and the US airbases, I'm sure there were bars with girls, which is my definition of a barbeer.

I always thought when someone mentioned a "bar beer" they were referring to those open air places.

Given google does not come up with a definition as such, IMO it's whatever one wants it to be, and IMO it's a bar with ladies to take out. A "bar" would not employ ladies to take out.

In my opinion. This isn't about cleaning up the streets. Its about a land grab. Push out all the clubs and bars in Pattaya by removing their review stream. Grab the land cheap and easy. Build the hotels, shopping malls, and Casinos for the Chinese tourists ... and get a little kick back on the side.

I assume you all have seen the building plans for Pattaya?

They don't care about the working class. Look how they are distroying the street vended. Which were highly rated and a tourist attraction in themselves.

I waiting for the announcement for the legalization of Casinos........

It is probably just me, but there seems to be a different feel this time.  Sadly, I fear the Soi 6 places are sticking to the 6 pm openings indefinitely.  The rest of it we will see but there seems to be a general fear or maybe resolution, that this is happening.

I am in Bangkok now and with the holiday Nana has virtually been a ghost town.  I don't see Nana activity (Soi 4) ever totally going away but the trend seems to be towards much nicer, higher end places several of which have been opened in the past year.  I can see them totally doing away with Nana plaza and to be honest it would not bother me at all.  Not much new or interesting there it seems and some of the same girls from 8 years ago.

Soi Cowboy still seems to be doing OK.

No question that Soi 6 is now stuck with 6pm openings which effectively wipes the soi out. Have just walked by at 2nd rd end and sad to see the empty soi devoid of people. It was always an afternoon run

I'm pretty sure they don't have a definition of susghetti, either.   Even if that's how half the kids mispronounce it.  Eventually, they grow up and learn their words.

Nightwish group will have to rethink now since it owns most bars in that Soi

Actually they (NW Group) were quite low key up to last year, then the head guy (Bryan Flowers) starts really being vocal and up front on all social media (including posts of taking care of the police). His so called managers (sic) also started adding stuff online which must upset the authorities also, so I believe this has also played into the hands of City Hall, to not shut the soi down, but to hamstring it's operation and profits severely. Time will tell, but these guys should cool it for a while, as nobody really cares who owns what, just that there are nice women to hook up with.

NOTE: I am also a person that enjoyed Soi 6 in the afternoons, so the afternoon hiatus is also the shits for me personally.

Hope saner heads prevail.

I've been here for nearly a decade and IMHO every June/July/August is crackdown time.  This is when the boys in brown cut their deals before opening again for high season. In a couple months, it'll be business as usual.

The one difference this year of course, is that it's still the mourning period for the nation. That lasts until mid-October.

Re: Nana Plaza, the owners renewed their lease for another 10 years at the start of 2017.  You can panic again in 2026.

As for the trend towards higher end places -- that's just a trend towards investors with more cash to burn. We've seen that globally for a while now. And globally ROI is shit, so that's not a trend to bank on. Ask any bar owner and they'll tell you business is down. When you see places getting more expensive and revenues dropping at the same time, the trend is simply not going to last.

Wait until the economic cycle turns... the basic Nana agogo isn't going anywhere. The smart bar owners are the ones who invest nothing on infrastructure,  focus on getting/keeping good talent, and are on-premises day in and day out. (eg: Frank). Thailand is a boom/bust economy. When we hit the next bust (which is a matter of when, not if) there's going to be a lot of idiots stuck with "premium" businesses IMHO.

Nana used to be the cheese, but is now the mould.

I still think the best looking girls are now exclusively on the internet, and the days of Soi 6 etc are now coming to an end. It's been a long run, but everything ends.

The next evolution will hopefully be sex androids, but I fear not in time for me to take advantage.

Agreed and that will also apply to any that bought condos or houses as an "investment".

I visited  the 6 on my last trip (Jan-April 2017) and it was a shadow of its former self then. 2 old friends who've been visiting Pattaya for decades agreed, so to be honest, i miss the Soi 6 of 10 years ago, but if it shut now, it wouldn't be that much missed. I say that regretfully because in its day I had LOTS of fun there but it had changed for the worst long before this present crackdown. I really hope that reverses but then I also really hope to win the lottery!

I have never understood the judgement of the girls or for the act.  In majority of cases is a personal agreement between 2 willing parties, so why the beef?  It is truly a stupid law where it is illegal in my opinion what a waste of resources.
As far as what they do here, or anywhere in the world it is a multi billion dollar business.  But if I was a hot chick and knew many guys would pay to boom me, why not?  Better then working in some department store for literally nothing.
In the big picture they truly are trying to make a better life.  For themselves and their families many of these girls have sick or destitute relatives they want to help. So in many cases here it is not some selfish game.  I have met many nice, kind working ladies here and other places so they are not a bunch of bad people....

Lol.

Most girls in other countries would just get a normal job.

Yes am afraid that flowers fella really is somewhat deluded with his posting on facebook. I deleted him when the idiot was boasting on his facebook about breaking someone out of jail kenny or something similar. Wanted no further connection the guy is very very naive

It takes quite a lot to get "bounced back" at the airport. Moody back to back visa exempt entries etc If you're a millionaire (Even in baht) you could afford an elite visa. Obviously, you're not so you can't

yeah I'm sure the equivalent of GBP 10,000 would've made all the difference to your becoming a millionaire, Mr. Mitty

they will lose so many tourists the place will be like a ghost town and all the locals who rely on them for some kind of income may turn to crime which inturn will further decrease the number of tourists .

Look at the photo the place is empty now
