BANGKOK, 6th July 2017 (NNT) - A meeting of the government’s team guiding the reform of the country’s public affairs has called for continued efforts to tackle illegal fishing activities in Thailand.

The meeting this week, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon, discussed the progress of various national reform plans, including reform of the rice sector.

On this topic, the meeting discussed a proposal that would make Kalasin Province a center able to conduct a feasibility study on the setting up of a special economic zone for rice.

Then, the discussion moved on to gauge progress in efforts to solve the problem of illegal fishing. Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Kongcheep Tantravanich says that Gen. Prawit has insisted that all related operations be driven towards sustainable solutions that are in line with international practices, as opposed to just persuading the European Union to remove the yellow card it has issued to Thailand or to improve the country’s ranking on the US’s Trafficking in Persons Report.

Maj. Gen. Kongcheep said that the government is determined to pursue all efforts to solve this problem, including the amendment of related laws and the registration of all fishing vessels.

Anything but actual convictions with long sentences and/or substantial fines.

Thailand fails to understand why it remains in Tier 2 Watch List and likely so in 2018.
