Root Canal Treatment (Bangkok)

Looks like I'll need a root canal treatment! It's my first and I don't know of a good dentist (endodontist) in Bangkok that I can go to.  Would anyone be able to recommend a good endodontist in Bangkok?  One that you have tried and was happy with the work/service?  Thank you for any advice and suggestion.

BKK is a big place.  You may save a lot of travel time if you were to narrow it down to a specific area.

BDIC: Bangkok International Dental Center has specialists for each discipline and is a very professional and well run practice. In Huay Khwang on Ratchada Road.

went to a  small dental centre in SEACON SQUARE, called Smile Plus dont confuse it with others there, the dentist spoke  good  English (MAN) was not  ripped  off and nothing unecessary was done, he was pretty gentle and if necessary someone can sit in with you whilst they work on your teeth.Check his prices first  I found  them excellent

If you want the best Endodontist in the area, I would recommend Dr. Suwat Pisuttikulchai. He works at the St. Louis Hospital on Sathon Road a couple days a week, I believe Sunday and Wednesday Phone 0-2675-5000. I was actually recommended to him by my Dentist. He speaks very good English and for root canals Dr. Suwat is very well known and did excellent work on mine. The total cost of mine was 7820 baht at the St. Louis Hospital. I imagine the price can vary with the individual patient’s needs. I am not really sure if you need a recommendation from a dentist or not but in my case I had one. Good luck.

Likely that you know already, but realize that you will almost certainly need a crown on top of the treated tooth. The cost of such varies depending on the material as well as the dentist doing such. I find gold is best but others prefer composition with gold top, and other versions.This will be totally separate from the endodontist service and charges.

Posted this some time ago in the hope it would help folk asking such questions. I have been fortunate in that I have never so far needed root canal work, but this place has all dentists of all types and experience. You can ask for details about their services.

Big fan of Dental Hospital, Sukhumvit Soi 49. A little pricy, but never had a bad experience. They gave me my options, offered their recommendation, and let it all up to me. 5-star professionals.

Thank you all for your input and for sharing dental clinics, dentists :-) and personal experiences.  I guess I have homework to do now to check them out.  Interesting to know that St. Louis Hospital has a dental section!  

 

Seems like the post crown treatment will cost more than the RCT...

All hospitals have a dental section - just as all hospitals offer out-patient clinics.  Hospitals are the normal stop for any medical treatment (although beauty clinics are often independent I would also recommend using hospitals for that too).

 

There are often 3 charges - the RCT/Pin/Crown.  Sometimes a Pin will not be required but often it is.  Any dentist should be able to do an RCT but better to use larger facility where the doctor doing specializes as likely to be done better and will less pain.  Actually most are painless.

I never had issue getting from normal soi dentist but admit my experience dates from at least a decade ago.  I would highly recommend using a larger clinic where the person doing is more experienced as the price should not be much different (larger clinic does not have to mean more expensive and many in hospitals will not be).

It is not easy to get this work done in a specialist hospital even if you are Thai.

 

My gf managed it after a complete bodge job by a truly awful dentist.

 

It took considerable persuasion however the result was thankfully a beautiful smile.

But why do they need to put a cap or crown on the tooth and not just fill it like a decay ?

They have to cut down into the tooth to remove the root so there is not enough structure remaining to fill and still meet other tooth as filling material is not strong enough.   RCT is last chance to save tooth that had serious decay into the root system.  But these days many people make the choice to remove tooth and do an implant.  But it is not always an option and is always a lot more expensive.  Another option to crown would be a bridge attached to adjoining teeth.  Or cheaper a removable bridge (but that is usually for more than one tooth).

Wow that is a spectacular deal from St Louis I would say, unless there is ++ on that...say for the cap after (or not required in your case?)

I have had two root canals now, both in Bkk. Almost thought I needed a third last week and went prepared for the unpleasant experience - but they told me it was just my old crown pressing on the tooth beside and moved it back for me. They recommended I replace it and I will, but no pain right now so I am holding off....

Now as for dentists, the place I had the last RC done (and that saved me from this one) is called Dr Dentist. They are on Suk 24, on the Rama IV end, close to President Park.

A friend recommended them to me, and even though I have only seen the same dentist twice (turnover is high in every profession around here it seems) they have always provided a clean facility with friendly and efficient office staff and the dentists have until now been fine. I in particular appreciate that they did not just drill me again, but rather did the much less lucrative xray and quick adjustment (450 THB). But I will say my total for the last RC with them was closer to 20k THB, including the crown.

In any case, enjoy it!

Do you know if an implant will last longer than root canal and cap ?

 

root canal + cap seems to cost around 15000

implant around 50000 ?

Believe implant should be for life (unless you break) as there is no chance for decay.  An RCT and crown is normally considered about 10 year life (although could be a lifetime for many) as decay could occur below the crown.  Believe prices are about right or a bit low depending on where done.

Hi kuma and yes there was an additional cost of the installation of an all ceramic crown on the tooth that I had the root canal performed at St. Louis hospital for 7,820 baht . It first required a post installed in the tooth which was a charge of 2,100 baht. Then I had the all ceramic crown added which was an additional 14,000 baht. So the root canal, post and all ceramic crown all total was 23,920 baht for everything complete. I will say I am very satisfied with all the work done by the endodontist and also my dentist who is also my implant specialist Dr. Pokpong Amornvit, DDS, MS at The S Sathorn Clinic Soi Saunplu 8, Sathorn Thai Road Phone 02287-4922. Dr. Pokpong has also done implants for me, which have cost 45,000 baht each total for everything including the titanium implant and zirconia crowns. The process took 90 days total from implant to crown.

Thank you, now we know that stlouis is far to be the best priced places for dentist.

 

18000 for root canal + crown at some of the best dental clinics in Thailand is what it usually costs.

Ignorant response.  The root is never removed during a root canal treatment.  Drilling is done only to provide access into the canal system to properly clean out and fill.  The only additional drilling would be to remove decay and any old restorations.  A determination is then made regarding the need for a crown based on the amount of remaining sound tooth structure, occlusal function, and financial need of the dentist.  Decades of research shows us that a crown does not strengthen the tooth.  Similarly a post or pin does not strengthen the tooth.  They are placed only when there is not enough sound tooth structure to hold the buildup material. A specialist will probably provide a better end result for root canal treatment but a specialist is NOT necessary for most teeth.  You will still have to return to the general dentist for any restorative treatment.

 

You would all be well advised not to pay much attention to the uninformed opinions on boards like this, including any MD's.  For better or worse you are going to have to rely on your dentist for technical details like this.  You must just find a dentist that you feel comfortable with.  Trust you gut.  That is about the best advice I can give anyone. here unfortunately.  Wish I could help more.

I think that you are wrong. Most people know nothing and don't want to know anything. I will also not trust greedy dentists that all have a car almost as expensive as mines !
