Taxi driver slightly injured in train crash during downpour

By The Nation

A taxi driver was slightly injured when a freight train carrying military hardware crashed into his vehicle in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Mueang district early Saturday.

Pol Lt-Colonel Siriwat Riamsiri, an inspector of Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima police station, said the accident happened at 2.15 am at the rail crossing on Sueb Siri road in front of Soi 11 in Tambon Nai Mueang.

The taxi driver, Matthana Praphandinee, 36, had slight injuries to his head and body.

Train driver Thaweechai Kotewong, 56, said he was transporting military hardware from the Suranaree fort back to a provincial station when the taxi cut in front of the train at the crossing.

He said was driving at only 10 kilometres per hour but could not stop the train in time because it was raining and the tracks were slippery.

The taxi driver said he did not hear the train’s whistle because it was raining hard and he did not see the training was approaching.
