Ten arrested in colour-coded crackdown on foreigners in Bangkok

Ten foreigners were arrested during searches in 45 areas of Bangkok in what police have called their "Black Eagles" operation late Wednesday night.

 

The operation was led by Pol Maj-General Surachet Hakpal, deputy commissioner of the Tourist Police Bureau, with officers from the tourist police, Narcotics Suppression Bureau, Immigration Bureau and Patrol and Special Operations Division.

 

At the end of the operation, Surachet held a press conference at 1am on Thursday at the Nana Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 4 in Klong Toey district to announce the results.

 

The operation netted a Nigerian and Ghanaian man for having entered the country unlawfully, Surachet said.

 

Two Indians, two Nigerians and two Ugandan tourists were arrested for overstaying their tourist visas, he added.

 

A Kenyan man was arrested for working without a permit and a Ugandan man was arrested in possession of drugs.

 

Surachet added that 32 foreigners had been detained pending DNA tests.

 

He said the "Black Eagles' operation had been carried out in areas frequented by foreigners to prevent crime and create confidence among foreign tourists.

BANGKOK — Police said they arrested 10 “black people” for various offenses early Thursday morning in an operation they described as racially motivated.

 

Ten people from various African countries and India were paraded in front of reporters at the Nana Hotel in Soi Sukhumvit 4 at about 1am. They were all detained in a raid on dark-skinned foreigners earlier that night as part of an ongoing effort police have dubbed “Operation Black Eagle.”

Oh boy here we go, the virtue signalling thought police out in force to chastise all the evil people on TV as racists whenever they comment on criminals who are not white. So predictable you can almost set your watch to it. Political correctness doesn't exist in Thailand and I wish it didn't get forced down our throats on this forum either.

No, that's not it at all

When a white person commits a crime, people rightly come out and condemn him or her as an individual.

However, when a non-white person commits a crime, those same people come out and condemn the whole race.

That, like it or not, is racism.

Disagree. Generalization, yes, stereotyping possibly. Racism, no. People who are obsessed with racism tend to see it everywhere they look. And most of the time it is people taking offence on behalf of the people in question, who for the most part couldn't care less and who probably harbour more racist thoughts towards you than the person being accused of racism in the first place.

Well if you say so. The point is that if police were informed that X amount of people who were engaging in criminal behaviour were black and of African descent, then they wouldn't go and round up a bunch of Irishman from O'Malleys Pub now would they? Furthermore, a stroll down lower Sukhumvit at night would erase any doubt as the race/nationality of most/all of the people selling drugs and harrassing passers by. If the majority of those types of people are engaged in those types of activities and never seem to be represented in any meaningful numbers in any other "tourism" related activities, then I fail to see how acknowledging or commenting on those facts makes one "racist".  Facts by definition can not be racist.

They only got 10? There are up to 30 African drug pushers on the corner of Sukhumvit soi 13 every night hassling passers-by to buy drugs... and more than that in Sois 3 and 4 and between.

 

The issue is the police only arrest these criminals if they are in possession of drugs or have committed an immigration offence like illegal entry or overstay.

 

They need to start arresting them for breaching other visa conditions. Selling anything on a Tourist visa is illegal. They only need to watch these drug dealers for 10 minutes to know they are working, even if they are not in possession at the time or their tourist visa has not run out.  They would be able to get rid of all these criminals immediately if they enforced that law.

When the new Q condos on soi 6 and the New Hyatt on soi 11 are competed I expect and hope Sukhumvit sois 4 to 12  and 5 to 13 are cleaned up as I enjoy the Nana area without the drug dealers and African working ladies. Don’t see any drug dealers hangin out on soi 2 near JW Marriott and same will happen on soi 11. Good bye and good riddance to all the guys hangin out at the 7-11 between sois 11 and 13 from the African continent selling drugs.

Mow if only they'd clear up the European, North American and Antipodean guys buying drugs of those Africans, having drunken punch ups in the street, sleeping rough in urine-sodden pants in and around soi 4 and generally making an utter nuisance of themselves, Nana would be a Utopia

Anyone who complains that the police action by the drug suppression and immigration police is racist is an African drug dealer or very very dumb.
