Hundreds of Indians just wanted to stay in Thailand - and bent officials connived to let them

Sanook reported that three corrupt officials at the Wang Muang district offices in Saraburi have been sacked over presenting false documents to allow hundred of Indians to "marry" Thai people.

Unbeknown to the Thai women involved, their names were used to enable 300 Indians to stay on marriage visas when they would normally have had to leave Thailand.

Three of the Indians who face deportation were paraded for the press on Wednesday.

But there are many more under investigation - up to another 1,700.

The corrupt officials were paid 2,000 baht each by middle men to process false documents for the Indians in the province just to the north of Bangkok.

And yet the police paraded the three Indians as criminals, not the three Thai government officials who were accepting vast bribes and engaging in the falsification of official government documents.

They weren't named. They weren't shown. And it's always kind of unclear when a Thai media article says "sacked," does that actually mean FIRED or does it mean transferred to another position somewhere.

How about criminal charges against the three Thai government officials???  Silence.....

Corruption is alive and well here, four years later, despite all the public claims.

I thought the pic was the naughty Thai folk.....

maybe you are over 50 and don't actually need to be married for long term stay

Well being married doesn't tie up 800,000 baht in the bank which is wanted for 3 months in our province.

yes I know but in all honesty anyone that can't access 800k shouldn't be here anyway

the point I was making is that marriage removes the 50 year age limit

As usual here, the photo has no caption. But I took my clue from the text in the article:

Nothing about the three crooked local government officials being paraded for the press.

I think you thought wrong.

And purely out of interest how many of these 'people' are up to no good and are criminals ? I doubt any of them.

depends what you mean by criminal, the fact is, they do not meet the requirements for obtaining a 12 month extension

I can understand wanting to get away and go stay some place.  But how would they support themselves?  Can they really get by and subsist better in Thailand than back in India?  I am guessing that if you get 5 or 6 in a small apartment and a few do odd jobs, they can exist, but doesn't seem like a great way to go.

If the income is enough why must one be able to "access" 800000 baht 8n a Thai bank?

Before the Indian bashing starts, it may be worth considering that the real culprits in this issue were the corrupt Thai officials.

I would say there's plenty of lawyers charging for loads of false nominee employees so these Indians can take jobs on top of their fake marriage visa.

They don't as I posted earlier but I suspect the motive for these fake arrangements is the age restriction because you can bribe your way through when it comes to meeting financial requirements as I  have already mentioned

Just having a marriage certificate isn't enough to get a marriage extension, you would also need a copy of the wifes' id, her housebook, photos of you together, which suggests there were more than just the three officials involved in this.

That's a very good point, assuming of course that Immigration in that area is actually following their own rules for marriage extensions, and/or that these guys were actually getting legitimate extensions as opposed to fake ones.

If they were getting legitimate ones, perhaps the regular POLICE aren't interested in pursuing the case any further in ways that might implicate their brethren Immigration POLICE.
