Look at Mercedes Benz instead. Many more models (30) to choose from. Many more deals to be made. 110 years in Thailand.

Every time I see a Mercedes I cant help thinking it is a taxi.

good point re the gas, got to get in plenty of KM to do that. insurance i think on a high end car is about the same i think

I pay 34k/ year for a first class insurance on Volvo V40 T5.

To insure the same car with the same conditions in Italy (where we have notoriously high insurance rates) would be in the range 1.500 - 2.000 EUR per year (60-80k THB) plus more than 600 EUR/year (24K THB) for the road tax

Let them buy overpriced Jap washing machines with 4 wheels and call them "cars" ......

Like the Fortuner, 1.6 M for the top spec and at the end it's just an Hilux in a tuxedo.....

i have first class ins also on my BMW it cost about 60 or 65,000 baht = about 1,500 pounds which i think would be the same price in England.

sorry to inform you that you are wrong i have a new BMW 430 i M sport convertible here in Thailand cost me 4.3 million = 100,000 sterling the same car costs 53,000 pounds in England.

Sorry to inform you, but I am talking actual prices, not what you have paid. The actual price of 430i Coupe M sport is 3,759,000.

https://www.bmw.co.th/content/dam/bmw/marketTH/common/SPEC sheet/update-180405/ZCNH_ZCE3_430i-Coupe-M-Sport.pdf

I just took 5 minutes to check the price at BMW Germany for the 430i Coupe with the specs in Thailand. It is about 2,6 mb. Well, a 40% mark up. Still far away from the double or triple myth. (Adding a joke: If the exchange rate would be of that 10 years ago, this 2.6mb would be actually 3.2mb, very close to 3.8mb).

Then, you are right about the higher price for a "430i Coupe" and I actually just checked the 3 and 5 series and compared it to BMW.de calculator and there the price difference is 20%.

And additional to that: Just ask the Danes or Swedes if they think the price is marked up in comparison to their local market. I mean, we could use the BMW.dk or BMW.se configurator and will find that they are on par with Thai prices.

Correct, if you compare the base models sold in Europe vs the models sold here (ASEAN assembled) the price difference is big but if you will try to build the same car on the European configurator then all the difference will suddenly disappear, all of the European brands (BMW, Merc, Volvo) fill up the locally assembled ones with tons of optionals to close the price gap and bring up the perceived value of the car.

You got it. I would never have bought my BMW in Thailand if it was more then 50% mark up. So, I checked exactly the same specs for the BMW offered in Thailand and Germany and found out it's at 25%.

Mercedes are used in Europe for taxis. In fact many Germans consider a Mercedes as a Farmers or butchers car

We are not in Europe and if the Benz ware the same price in Europe as they are here they would not be using Benz for taxis.

Because the money saved on the car purchase can be put to use elsewhere.

That's certainly a valid and polite answer.

Agreed but I still look at them and see a taxi. Nice cars and well made but it is just the relationship that always springs to mind

I wonder how that really works out comparatively.   Mercs are not inexpensive at all in Europe even though they are often used as Taxis especially in Germany.

In Thailand the vehicle of choice can be a Toyota (Camry) or even a Fortuner.

How does the math work out taking into account per capita income and such?
